I hope she ditches the over-personification aspect of her art.. it’s really dragging her down trying to make characters and timelines and all this extra SHIT that shouldn’t have to exist alongside the music.. look at Gorillaz. They release whatever they want and have a broad enough “ lore” to be flexible with it. Melanie just limits herself. All I can say is thank god nobody is letting her set another 2 million dollars on fire in front of a castle for a “film” this time around. Hell even her acoustic pre-debut work had more of a universal appeal but still drew from the same imagery and themes. It’s just crazy to me how some people can actually get worse at writing the older they get.

I still remember laughing at Melanie calling herself "probably the only artist on Atlantic with that many leaks" or something… mind you, she's under the same label as Charli XCX

This era is already getting boring and messy to me, I'm sorry. We have so little info on the new character, almost every single tour show was the same, the videos were nothing but CGI vomit and disconnected visuals to me, and we've basically been getting zero presence from Melanie outside of her having to call out her own fans on TikTok and Instagram for making shit up(like several times just in this month alone).

I don't blame her for not wanting anything to do with her fanbase lately, but I really didn't expect her to pretty much disappear to the point of not even posting photos or using her own voice in interviews, lol.. I don't even feel like this is the same artist anymore.

Can she drop the film thing…?

not trying to be rude, but she sucks as a director and her scripts are shit. She should stick to making music videos cause K-12 the movie was a mess. It actually made me realize how childish she can be… a 5 year old could write a better plot

her stubborness and victim complex is getting on her way, and that’s a shame cause she has potential: great ideas (maybe not always executed the best way but), a unique voice, a loyal fanbase, the support from her label (as much as she complaints, they always have backed up her crazy ideas) etc.

or some people genuinely don’t like the album?

its a step down from her previous work. the criticism is very valid, not only from the critics but also the long time fans who notice the quality difference.. the album has some fun songs, but could’ve been much better (for example it feels like a playlist, no cohesion at all)

After listening EXTENSIVELY, I've grown to love all of the songs on the album. I'm still disappointed, but I don't think it's terrible and is actually pretty enjoyable if you don't focus too hard.

The pitchfork review score....that hurts. I don't necessarily disagree, though I think maybe a 5 would be more accurate, but damn is it so upsetting to see an artist who has SO much potential and has put out stuff that is SO much better get a score like that. We know that Kim has it in her, we know she can elevate things; but this fucking label is holding her back so much.

Agree with everyone else that the "singles" for this album were shit, and the roll out was god awful. Claws and KOH need to be released as singles ASAP!

no, all those twitter accounts just constantly make a ton of shit up. they say she’s dropping every month, so one month, *eventually*, they’ll end up being right.

but they never ever ever ever have any insider information whatsoever.

Yeah she might’ve had a few contracts canceled but she continued to do lots of modeling and even continued her big deal with Redken after the arrest. It’s not like Zach derailed her entire career. A lot of that has to do with Sky and/or Capitol, depending on what’s truly happening behind the scenes lmao.

The 1-2-3 punch of walking in the Marc Jacobs show, the arrest, and the release of NTMT, all happening so close to each other, was iconic. The arrest really solidified the heroin chic vibe the music and visuals were eliciting. Wish I could go back in time to 2012/13, the lead up to NTMT was everything.

honestly this whole situation is just another warning for all the independent artists out there: do not sign with a major label, even if you're doing numbers by yourself. respect your integrity

It’s so weird how she was in the rollout for her debut album on a major label with people going insane for coconuts after the first two false starts with Malibu and then Future starts now..like they finally got her on a roll and decided to completely derail it with slutpop.. The amount of negative attention which was justified but still like did anyone at the label even think that this might not be the move.. also besides that what were they thinking doing a random throw away EP in the midst of her finally getting some buzz for an album.. so strange ? They literally don’t know what they’re doing at all with her.

her career really went downhill, if she can't keep her moral integrity at least keep the artistic integrity, like, ripping off slayyyter? what was she thinking

ik i said i wouldn't come back here but this is so sad… she really sold her soul to a corporation, what a shame

not a cultural reset or anything... but it's cute

I think it kinda shows how people miss happy party songs that are meant for dancing. Everyone in the last 10 years were trying too hard to be deep and make meaningful music that dance pop became rare. Even the ones who were party songs were usually too slow, shitty or were hiphop. So I'm not surprised why people love Dua's songs so much. If Future Nostalgia was released in 2010, she would've had great competition while now she doesn't really have.

hi girls, i've been a longtime charli stan but i'm a newbie in this site so bear with me lol

i'm sadly not feeling this era, which sucks because i know how much it means to charli. i think baby is a bop and so is good ones but the other 2 singles aren't hitting that hard for me. but honestly i feel like this type of sound is so been there done that with pop girls and it sucks to see charli cave in to it after giving us such innovative material over the years. of course ill wait to hear the full album, maybe my perception will change but this sound is kinda boring to me lol. i'm not one of those snobs who is like she MUST do pc music forever!1!1! but i wish to see something more inspiring and not songs that almost any other indie girl can sing, but maybe that's just me.

i think what makes n1a so special is that it hits the mark for both audiences, the pc girls like us and the gp with basic taste all in one. i get that her and atlantic are trying to cater to the gp but some of the people who care about her more (us) are losing interest instead because we know she can be more inspiring.

sorry for the paragraph lol ive been lurking and wanted to get that out.

New shapes remains the best song imo, every new single just make me appreciate it more and more

but the lack of bridges, underwhelming choruses, flat production.. I normally don’t have a problem with short songs, but good ones, and beg for you just sound unfinished. There’s a way to make fun, ‘sell out’ pop music without making boring songs.

so far her ‘janet album’ isn’t really doing justice to the source material she says influenced the songs in the first place

i’m still looking forward to crash tho

I saw the Future Nostalgia Tour recently and let me tell you
    it was fucking INCREDIBLE
Dua really brought the energy. I almost cried because of how proud i was of her. I haven’t had that much fun in years, never mind at a concert. My voice is STILL fucked up from it! I danced all night, and had the absolute time of my life. I really want to go see another date of the tour elsewhere because that’s how good it was!!!! If you don’t have tickets, you NEED to go!!!!

She’s not the same girl I met at pride 3 years ago, I’ve never really considered myself a Kim fan but she’s 100% lost her way and vision with this obsession to go viral and all this Dr Puke stuff…it’s just messy, too messy

most everyone mad at her isn’t a terf, and i’m not a terf and i personally can’t stand terfs. of course she would choose that angle because she wants to excuse herself from moral responsibility and play victim but….

lana broke her heart so she started a three-way lesbian relationship with lizzy platypus of MS MR and lana cosplayer xylophone in LA suburbs and became boring

I really enjoy her first album and I’d love for another project but at this point if we get one it’ll be a minor miracle. Not saying it’s not gonna happen, but there is absolutely no reason to expect anything based on her words. I’m not even blaming her for that! I’m sure she wanted and intended to put out music but things (sickness, label hell, whatever else) always seem to get in the way. She’s like Lana in that she likes to make premature announcements about things.

and just to backtrack to Fiona Apple a bit; yeah she takes hella long between records to come out with something but if she says new music is coming she means it. She isn’t saying every year that new music is coming out. Similar situation with Kate bush. They pop up every once in a while and give us great art, exactly when they intend to. Therein lies the difference.

I thought solar power would've grown on me more by now but with time I started liking it less. I don't think it's a terrible album, I'd still put it on as background noise, but it's just so bland. Especially when you compare it to her last 2 albums. Like, it really has nothing going for it. I remember listening to it for the first time being so excited about the bridge of Fallen Fruit cause it had a beat lol, that's so sad. The Path also started out beautifully, an amazing way to start an album, but then halfway through the song just turns into Herbalife the musical.. I didn't expect her to top Melodrama, but I just expected more.

& People can go on and on with their "this is a weed album, it's meant to be boring. you can't relate to it cause it's happy. your brain is too small to understand that acoustic guitar is far superior than synths!" but that really won't make the album any less boring lol. Going from an album as good as Melodrama to this is just tragic. Solar Power was a big disappointment.
