She's a really successful artist with tons of smash hits, but "22" failed to be 2013's summer anthem.

Is her "I Knew You Were Trouble" lover channeling Bradley Soileau?

In "Bad Blood", everything is super futuristic but they end up fighting with their hands, just like we all did when we were kids! Real futuretro.

Read some of her new lyrics, hmm...

    "Distance, timing, breakdown, fighting, silence..."
Describing a tragic relationship? I've seen it before
"Wining and dining, drinking and driving, excessive buying, overdose and dying"

"Oh my God, look at that face"
You love your lover's face, huh? Why doesn't it make you party then?
"Oh that face makes me wanna party"

"You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye and I got that red party dress lip classic thing that you like [...] You got that long hair, slicked back, white t-shirt and I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt"
What is all this Instagram imagery?
But wait... there's more Lana-inspired lines in "Style"!
"Takes me home, lights are off"
"Lights, camera, acción... if he likes me, takes me home"
He can take you home Tay, but he won't put you in the Oscar-winning movie Tropico!

And now, Lana's best megamix, "Wildest Dreams"!
"Let's get out of this town, drive out of the city, away from the crowds [...] This is gonna take me down" vs Lucky Ones' "Let's get out of this town, baby we're on fire. Everyone around here seems to be going down, down, down"

"He's so tall and handsome as hell" vs American's "You were like, tall, tan" vs National Anthem's "God, you're so handsome!"

"Say you'll remember me standing in a nice dress" vs Blue Jeans' "Say you'll remember..." And, of course, the iconic comparison between "Wildest Dreams"' melody and "Without You"'s.

    There's more!

"Looking at it now... last December... we were built to fall apart"
"But I still remember the day we met in December..."

    "It's been a long 6 months"
"Remember me the way I was 6 months ago"

Taylor isn't that dumb and she doesn't want the world to know she's the biggest Lana Del Rey fan, and that's why she says "clear blue" in "This Love" instead of the legendary "dark blue".

"You stand with your hand on my waist"
"Put your hands on my waist, do it softly"

"You're still all over me like a wine-stained dress"
What? Hmmm... wine is usually red so, does she have a little red party dress on?

To me, it's the perfect mix of all her albums together, not really a follow-up to an individual album, but an entire new entity, with elements of all of her previous works.

The title track has strings, which makes it a lot more similar to Born to Die, but is slower like Ultraviolence. Its lyrics remind me of Paradise, with its references to fire, roses, and so on, but it also has a bit of an Ultraviolence feel as well with the reference to "the history of violence" line. It also sounds very much like a soundtrack song too.

Music to Watch Boys To has this exotic/tropical vibe and lyrics that reminds me of Paradise, but the drums remind me of Ultraviolence, as does the "nothing gold can stay, like love or lemonade" line. The only Born to Die reference I can think of is the "blue ribbons on ice" line (This Is What Makes Us Girls throwback).

Terrence Loves You is probably the only song on the album that sounds as if it definitely could have come from another era. It sounds like a bit of a slower Ultraviolence track, in my opinion, with the guitars and drums towards the end, and the jazzy influences.

God Knows I Tried is quite similar to Ultraviolence - not really sure why, but it's kind of slow, has guitars and a lot of reverb. The chords are also quite similar to "Kinda Outta Luck" so it has a bit of an unreleased feel too.

High By The Beach is quite a modern song with a few electronic elements, as well as fast beats and a catchy chorus, which definitely makes me think of Born to Die. Lyrically though, the bridge takes me back to AKA, with that "lights, camera, acción" reference.

Freak reminds me of Paradise, since it's kind of Cola 2.0 in my opinion and it has that same sexy vibe to it. The beats have a similar feel to Born to Die.

Art Deco sounds quite similar to Born to Die as well, with the beats and lyrics.

Religion starts off sounding a lot like Ultraviolence, quite slow and reflective, but by the chorus it sounds like a more mature version of a Born to Die song, with the chords in the background and the beats.

Salvatore has beats most similar to Born to Die, but vocals reminiscent of Ultraviolence or Paradise.

The Blackest Day reminds me a lot of Cruel World, considering its length and chaotic nature. It even references guns. A few of the lines sound like something off Paradise or Ultraviolence ("Just put your hands up in the air, the radio on" which is similar to West Coast and Burning Desire's lyrics). The chords in the background though sound very much like Born to Die, and it's quite a fast track by the chorus and bridge.

24 sounds a lot like her soundtrack songs, but has that same jazzy vibe as Ultraviolence.

Swan Song has the orchestra of Born to Die, vibe of Ultraviolence, and the lyrics of Paradise, but more than anything, sounds like another soundtrack song.

Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood reminds me most of Ultraviolence, it has a very similar tone to The Other Woman in my opinion.

So, overall, you can pick out lots of elements that reference her previous works, but the album as a whole is so diverse that it doesn't sound like just one album. It has the variety of AKA and some lyric throwbacks, some similar beats to Born to Die, a bit of a tropical vibe reminiscent of Paradise, as well as the slow, jazzy feel and occasional guitar strum/drum sound of Ultraviolence.

I feel like you should add a "mixed" option to the poll, because Honeymoon sounds neither like just Born to Die nor just Ultraviolence.

Yes, I would agree with you there, but I really like that HM sets that haunting tone for the album, something that is brought up in several other songs on the record.
  12. slayqueen liked a post in a topic by renaissance in What's Your Favourite/Least Favourite HM song?
i disagree. i think it perfectly sums up the album. the haunting vocals and minimal instrumental really prepares the listener for the heaven they are about to experience.

Look, it could be anything. So many people don't understand her image and creative artistry, so they give her 1/10 in ignorance to her art which makes me so sad

Good reviews: Honeymoon is haunting, ethereal, ghostly, mesmerizing, beautiful, lush, cinematic.
Bad reviews: Honeymoon is boring, slow, "limousines" and "soft ice cream" lyrics are ridiculous, it's the same from Lana, the shtick it's getting old, she mumbles the lyrics.

After being obsessed with Lana pieces I arrived at the point when I don't give a shit about the reviews because they are incredibly boring and cliche-istic. From some time I have the feeling that I read them before. I'm beyond the cringe worthy status when I'm reading some clueless writer's discovery of her story, having the big "revelation" that her real name is not LDR   or babbling about her non-authentic persona. I uber cringe when they are misspelling her stage-name to RAY (I always wondered if that is intentional) or calling her, in a patronizing mode, Lizzy Grant or mentioning SNL    .

I expect something around 60-65 (there will be 3 or 4 scores in the 30-40 range Jim Farber NYD, Chicago Tribune, AV Club and a random idiot like last year 405 reviewer of UV Derek Robertson (Carl Williot from Idolator hates HM and the Baeblemusic blog has a negative campaign against her lately but I don't think that they count towards the MC score). Most of the reviewers will wash their hands with a 55-65 score and there will be some stans who will even out the hater scores. Really,"the same old" accusation it's more fitting to these writers than to Lana's music. I almost forgot that Youtube buffoon Anthony Fantano who will give Honeymoon a 0 score while singing mockingly the chorus of Salvatore.

Have "fun" I guess reading that BS, mostly the pieces where you have the clear impression that the critic didn't even bothered to listen to the album properly lifting out a word or a sentence to trash the entire lyrical content of the album. Most of the writers are misogynistic pricks, failed indie musicians who are jealous of her "undeserved" success or feminists who are cringing at her music and I'm frankly amazed, given the divide between her and the critics, that she has a respectable overall score on MC.

i'm so conflicted. i love honeymoon, but what it suffers from is a lack of variety. the songs on their own are great, but the album is all so slow/barely mid-tempo that it becomes laborious to listen to the whole thing at once. all of the songs have a similar 'feel' to them. the thing is, i like that 'feel'! but those songs don't get to shine in an album that lacks variety. we can't appreciate the slow, sensual moments as much because the entire album is that way.

let's think about ultraviolence. i've heard so many people say that was an album of sleepy songs. but we also had songs like west coast, MPG, FMWUTTP, & florida kilos to break up the monotony, you know?

this is the first time i really feel like the lyrics are besides the point. they are more a vehicle for the melody than anything. she was right when she described HM as being more "surrealistic" and less personal.

that said, i can appreciate pretty much anything lana puts out. i am here because of her voice & that has never disappointed me. on this album her vocals are even more self-assured & fluid & reach new heights. i'm glad she stopped trying to change her natural vocal range.

the album highlights for me are the blackest day ( perfection), salvatore (get out of my head!), freak (hot), terrance loves you (watch me cry), & music to watch boys to (  )

It's not like there is something wrong with still loving an album, regardless of how long ago it came out. It's great that Born To Die has longevity and people still love it, as opposed to just getting tired of it 3 months after release and hardly ever listening to it again.

Agreed, most of the songs are so similar in style/vibe that there aren't much standouts
  19. slayqueen liked a post in a topic by Wynwood in Honeymoon - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll
i wish Honeymoon had more iconic songs like BTD and UV had, when you think of BTD you think Video Games, National Anthem, Blue Jeans. When you think UV you think West Coast, Brooklyn Baby, Shades of Cool, Black Beauty. but when i think of HM i dont really think of particular iconic songs. maybe its because its early in the era but i dont see any songs becoming icons beside maybe MTWBT, Salvatore, Religion, and TBD
