I really like ultraviolence as a song tbh, when you turn it up it’s so layered and creepy- UV, Shades of cool and Pretty when you Cry are my top 3 UV songs with flipside and West Coast just missing the cut.
-
Yeah it’s weird to think how much I loved it at the time. It’s still iconic and I’d rank it above some other works but the beats feel kinda dated and that Rick James scream needs to die
-
Change is actually really good and one of her most heartfelt and understated lyrical moments. she needs to get a vocal coach for her voice and stop smoking(if she hasn’t) as she has so much wasted potential.

And I agree it is strange that people often dismiss as some cheap badly produced record. I’d rank its production above BTD it’s more concise and less overproduced. -

I’d rank quarter of lust for life as worse tbh, I do not think the issue is the song itself, the production was just ruined with too many elements and that Rick James scream -

I just don’t find it that interesting even structure wise , if we’re going to go from a musical structure perspective -toxic trumps lanas entire discography, there’s more to a song for me personally. -

Shades of cool deserves first place for its intricate melody, guitar solo and operatic vocals. It’s also much better lyrically than Venice bitch and has more interesting imagery -

In my feelings should be in last place, that song is awful or beautiful froggy voices. Justice for guns and roses and that cool guitar riff. -

I wouldn’t mind a country influence ala never let me go or on our way. she’s not a country artist at all though and I think you can hear that in ride which is soul more than anything else, even the songs where she tries to go full on country like breaking up slowly don’t sound country in her voice. her voice does not mix well with people like Nikki Lane, can she do a Folky voice?Yes. -
On a side note I miss charli and marinas friendship.. they must of been close because they had 100s of photos together laughing, more so than any other. It’s odd though because she ended her friendship with charli and Lana.

The tumblr era was crazy I remember the obsession with Natalia kills, Fka Twigs and Nicole dollanganger aswell

I see what you mean, of course I don’t want to go too off topic because it’s a charli thread and I can see what you mean with the Dido, Adele and Amy comparisons but I do think lanas sound was a tad more distinct in that more elements were mixed together. Amy was making pure throwback 60s indebted soul with a splash of jazz, same with Duffy and Adele who obviously were influenced directly or not. I’d even say xtina was influenced by this during back to the basics. Dido was just making trip hop but in a poppier way. Clearly her coming about was owed to portishead and massive attack in a big way. When Lana came up it was a struggle to really classify her, she wasn’t a big belter like the rest of these soul girls, she mixed orchestral, hip hop and baroque to a point where people desperately wanted to call her straight up pop because of her image but couldn’t. A lot of the girls that came after have clearly took influence like lorde,Billie Eilish, Melanie Martinez and early Halsey etc. Hell click on any alt or breathy pop girl after 2011 and you’ll get a lana comparison on YT. Charli is not directly influenced but I’d argue lana ushering in a new age of how women can market themselves as artists has helped. I mean even this thread gave her a cult following.
-
That’s very true and I don’t mean to take anything away from Charli as she definitely forged her own path, but Lana was definitely bigger (atleast here in the UK) with several songs doing well and being known. there was definitely a shift aswell as tons of people were being signed with a similar vibe like lorde and even mainstream pop like Selena Gomez and Taylor swift were taking inspiration. Even with fancy and I love it-nobody really knew charli, really her fame only started with the sucker album and boom clap.
-
Lana effectively kickstarted a lot of women’s careers who were doing something sort of pop but not pop at the same time, though I’d argue she got a lot less pop and the others got poppier as their careers progressed like Charles. Really we should be thankful.
-
Manifesting that charli does a lanaboards Q and A under a persona. Charles you know what to do
-
The only song that is awful is red balloon, caught in the middle is a little mediocre aswell as boom fap(which she used to hate aswell)!
-
I mean agreed but her saying boom clap is the best is a not when body of my own, breaking up, break the rules and gold coins exist atleast she mentioned need ur luv though. I do think die tonight is cute though

Anything but Jack please, hes so lazy with Lana he literally reused how to disappears bridge instrumental to make wild at heart and reused the same chords and melody from Mac to LMlYlAW. I do like more songs off the album than initially but he needs to go.
