  1. So if the article is very recent, RN did stonewall HM info, because if LDR's "honeymoon" instagram is legit, then RN's the lead producer on HM (it/she posted an RN picture used in this interview!). So if the article is recent, RN did weigh HM into his "future legend" assessment of LDR, which is good news.

https://www.youtube.com/user/udondoll/videos might be her legit youtube channel, and it's worth restating that you can listen to all her songs (with lyrics) at her bandcamp: http://nicoledollanganger.bandcamp.com/ So Greta Gibson Forever is finished? And it's no longer a sequel to "embarassing love songs"? I liked the earlier illustration of GG (by ND?), so I'm kind of curious about the change in cover art.

    Kimbra

http://www.vulkanmagazine.com/kimbra-interview/ The Vulkan interview doesn't strongly suggest she would go this direction and the front vocals don't quite sound like her to me (although maybe she did backing vocals for somebody else)? However, we'll wait and see.
  4. If you like neither Tropico nor UV, you don't like extremes in music videos, because they are at opposite ends of a continuum for what MVs can be (e.g., big, ambitious, pretentious, intellectual, whatever vs. small, understated, personal, emotional, whatever). So if I were to express this as an unpopular opinion I would say I like the way she explores extremes in her art. I think she does this mostly in songs (both within and between albums), and I like that it makes her seem unpredictable.
  5. I remember another interview a year or more ago, where RN said he really liked working on summertime sadness and that people liked her for her artistry. I also remember a podcast on iTunes where RN said he thought Lana would create lasting work, or words to that effect. Can't refind the podcast, and whatever candidates I can find for it appear to be deleted. If this article reflects a recent (new) opinion, this would be the 3rd time of RN stanning for Lana. Regarding it being new, the absence of any HM mention is bothersome. True it's an article about RN, but it would have been nice to know whether RN's "future legend" appraisal was influenced by knowledge of HM (I think it would have been a legitimate question after his saying that). The fact that there is no mention suggests a bunch of possibilities: maybe he doesn't know of/didn't contribute to HM; maybe the article is just a re-run (which I think the most likely); maybe the interviewer asked about RN's involvment with HM, and RN stonewalled that issue, even up to the point of stipulating not mentioning that he stonewalled it. Too many maybes.
  6. What I get is lots of problems reported at this festival (e.g. Ryan Adams complaining about DeadMau5 when the latter was playing, and DeadMau5 complaining about power failures when he was not). Billboard reports the irony of Ultraviolence being drowned out by Black Keys for those in back, and LDR is especially at a disadvantage (with respect to the back rows and this venue) because of fan singing (I guess mainly in front). So all in all it's good nothing new was unveiled. Hopefully, Govs Ball will suffer the most reputation-wise, and LDR will get a better NY venue next time.
  7. Well nobody should suggest that liking Grimes means you have better musical taste; it's perfectly alright not to like her. I would say to anyone wondering if they would like Grimes to check out her music videos first. If you don't like these, you probably won't like Grimes even with repeated exposure. Visions is the album to check out first as it was her critical break out album, but you'll also get a lot of cutting edge electronica with what's considered her popular hits (genesis, oblivion). IMO, Grimes' relevance to LDR --on this tour-- is that Grimes is a feminist. Oblivion is a fear-of-rape song. So the fact that Grimes would open for LDR (when LDR presumably asked her to) probably follows from the fact that Grimes has historically stanned for LDR at her actuallygrimes.tumblr.com (in the sense of her saying she liked this or that LDR song/video), which means that Grimes "gets" LDR's songs/videos as art and not some kind of weird threat to the moral fiber of society (or feminism). BTW, Grimes has extremely broad taste and stans quite often (in the sense of recommending) for LOTS of very different acts; some popular, some relatively unknown (e.g. Naomi Elizabeth, a recent example, just might be as incredible as Grimes says she is). She not only stans for new and less known artists in this sense, she sometimes invites them up on stage with her at shows (e.g., like what happened with Nicole Dollanganger this past week in Toronto). So even if you don't like her songs or performance style, there's a lot to admire about her as a music advocate.
  8. Well, yes, but there's always multiple sides to every LDR issue. https://twitter.com/LanaDelRey/status/343229677239943168

Wow. Kudos to Grimes for mixing stuff up genre-wise and supporting indie artists: https://instagram.com/p/3frHO5Dflg/?taken-by=actuallygrimes https://instagram.com/p/3ft0QVDfoA/?taken-by=actuallygrimes anyone see what (and how many songs) were performed with this vocal backing at this (6/3/15 Toronto, Endless Summer, Lana Del Rey) show? Too many links broken in this thread, though I'm happy to say songs like Smitten with You, Dog Teeth, Observatory Mansions, and others are (currently) on youtube, and you can play everything ND at her bandcamp. Also NEW albums "Natural Born Losers" and "Greta Gibson Forever: Embarassing Love Songs II" are in the works.
  10. ^ Grimes has some instagrams from last night (one with that singer Hana?), and she doesn't seem pissed or down about the show. https://instagram.com/p/3P4ASbjfpC/?taken-by=actuallygrimes and not understanding the words she sings is typical (for me at least) on Grimes studio work, but we really need an objective Grimes fan who went to that show (and previous ones) to comment. BTW, if you search for "Grimes razorstarzz" on Youtube you get razorstarzz's live retrospective on Grimes. If she sounded at least as good as those youtube performances, then she did fine, imo. And wow, what a pioneer. She doesn't even need a band!
  11. I have nothing against her getting into TV and radio promo more. She sort of does promo every tour with all those fan-delivered youtube concert excerpts, some of which are decent quality. However, she is shy, or whatever, and at times and avoids promo. If she is creating new music during those shy times (which she apparently was for HM), I'm fine with that. However, my main point is going to be about how well UV is doing without the promo. We usually compare it with BTD record sales, but what about streaming, which I think of as a kind of user-directed radio. On spotify you can mouse over a track and get its stream counts. If you do this for UV and BTD albums (I used the ones with bonus tracks, but *excluded* Paradise as another release) and count them up (approximately by tallying the integer millions part for each album track in a spread sheet) what do they look like? For UV 189 million, but for born to die 641. But you really need to divide BTD's by 2 because it's been around at least twice as long (that's conservative), so it's really: 189 vs 320.5. You might say there's still a sizeable difference but when you consider UV's lack of promotion (although I really think there was some), it's still a pretty impressive showing. UV is being *heard*, and it compares well with other critical successes (e.g., compare UV to Beck's Morning Phase or St. Vincent most recent album, is 61 and 28 million respectively). So I think if HM only does just as well as UV, that will be a pretty significant accomplishment (of course, better is better, but don't sell UV too short).
  12. I believe if she releases by Sept 30 it's in consideration for the 2016 Grammy Awards show (e.g., she'd be competing with Taylor's, 1989). If it's later than that, then it's 2017 awards show. So for *me* (I realize she probably gives NF about the Grammys), it will be interesting to see what the actual date will be.
  13. I think Lorde softened her opinion since that quote. Maybe someone can find her followup quotes? Anyway, Lorde's friends with Taylor Swift, and it wouldn't surprise me if they (along with Kim Gordon) hang around Lanaboards from time to time. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2909287/Taylor-Swift-Lorde-sport-similar-Daisy-Dukes-hike-Los-Angeles.html
  14. Well I appreciate your point. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and it also might be a communication to Eminem that she doesn't take his recent rap verses personally.
  15. Oh, it's an actual cover from a magazine? I was looking for Eminem's cover of Led Zep's Dazed and Confused on youtube (for real). It is interesting that she posted it. Hopefully, she *will* be on the cover soon, but if not she may be making a meta-statement about herself. So Eminem is smoking a bong, right? If nobody pans him for being a "bad role model", she receives a kind of "validation" that she is routinely panned for such (for instance, her Facebook picture of Mar 20th, where she smokes a cig) because of her gender, or maybe it's just her. Oh yeah, this has to be about HM. Maybe it means that there won't be much "role modeling" in the HM era (which wouldn't be much of a surprise).
  16. she could have just meant "futureretro" as a more hip term for neoclassical, which is essentially putting a modern spin on old forms the instagram interaction: I wish I knew which word she left the "s" off in the quote: "I have two beautiful video shot already". It's more reasonable that she left it off the word "shot", which implies there is one video and it's in progress. a website that is the source of the interaction?: http://websta.me/n/lanainspires
  17. Thanks, the vimeo worked fine (and I hope it lasts). Great *performance* music video with interesting visual montages of NB (or is it BJO?) wandering around looking mopey between songs. However, the musical noodling BJO does (mostly on prepared/processed piano), while he sulks, makes it very pleasurable. It was also interesting to see just how comfortable he looked/sounded behind the piano. I really hope "I See Her Smiling", which has an unexpected appearance here, makes it to his record. Art of Resurrection (the one guitar song) seemed strong (don't want to overplay before the record) and definitely has a Barrie-style, which I'm beginning to appreciate more. Magic Me seems like a fragment and not a full song (or is it just a very short song?). It was kind of a curious (potentially optimistic?) way to end things, regardless of the pessimistic suggestions implied by the traffic signs at the close of the video. For literary nerds only: The Edgar A. Poe (single-line) quote at the very end was interesting, if in case you are wondering whether or not Barrie is a habitual depressive. I'll share the background I found on it. It happens to be the top-liked quote at: http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/4624490.Edgar_Allan_Poe It is also apparently a quote from a personal correspondance, not a story! http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/eapoe/bl-eapoe-quotes.htm "I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity. During these fits of absolute unconsciousness, I drank - God only knows how often or how much. As a matter of course, my enemies referred the insanity to the drink, rather than the drink to the insanity." -- Edgar Allan Poe, letter to an admirer. Finally there's an actual context to this quote that relates to the death of EAP's wife, which was protracted. It was not so much her dying (eventually) that took its toll on Poe, but the time it took her die over the course of the illness (some kind of enurism). quote context starting at 3rd para (The year 1841...): http://www.readeasily.com/edgar-allan-poe/00136/001360013.php the quote itself on next page: http://www.readeasily.com/edgar-allan-poe/00136/001360014.php I wonder if Barrie likes the work of Thomas Ligotti, who is a U.S. horror writer (short-fiction), who has something of a philosophical perspective/aesthetic that may relate to the Poe quote. Ligotti is also sometimes compared to Poe.
  18. I'm not saying that she can't put unreleased (leaked) tracks on HM, and I would support her if she did, even if they weren't bonus tracks. However, it's not the only option. What about the Röyksopp gambit of releasing singletons w/o an album? If anybody could pull that off it would be her (and maybe she's tired of not getting any money for unreleased streams). The other thing is why these particular songs? The question is only interesting if she stops her unreleased attention here with just these songs, which would possibly give SK, YCBTB, UATW some kind of personal meaning. It's a less interesting a question if she has many more leaked songs she plans to present, either on tour or commercially somehow. Still waiting to see how that will play out.
  19. Any idea when Tidal releases its clutches on this (youtube is now blocked)? Wish he'd just release his album so I could buy it, I'm here for Barrie (not for tidal).
  20. I am terrifically pleased LDR showed affection for her past work. I'm terrifically pleased (and grateful) at all the video uploads and links to them posted at Lanaboards. Like most others, I'm wondering how far the unreleased attention is going to go. The best-case scenario (for me) is that she does the "leaked session" release(s?), independent of HM. If she were self-producing with her band, it wouldn't be surprising to have unreleased songs spill over to her concerts. It's also possible there won't be any more attention. I suppose the choice of songs (e.g., she didn't choose AKA material) might be indicative of how HM is going to go. Then again there's Chelsea Hotel, which kind of reminds me of May Jailer, so who knows. Other things I wonder: What was Courtney like? I like that LDR expects her audience to have broad taste. If an artist expects broad taste, it should make them uninhibited to do whatever they like. Grimes is also an interesting pairing. What will the reviews of this concert be like? Well here's one, sort of ambivalent (and no mention of the *importance* of the unreleased attention): http://www.chron.com/entertainment/article/Lana-del-Rey-Courtney-Love-join-forces-in-6250112.php Anyway, LDR looked/sounded great to me. It will be interesting to see whether the negative-hype wave is still around or if more people accept her as alternative popular artist this time.
  21. Are the large venues @@Tycho is worried about more closely attached to the Grimes appearances? It would seem reasonable that Grimes would like bigger venues. I know LDR prefers smaller (and does better at them), but if she can ace the bigger venues it's ultimately better for her, although, if she gets bigger, I hope she keeps the habit of having interesting indie artists open for her (Don't know if that would be an unpopular opinion or not).
  22. Just googled "Grimes feminism" and discovered Grimes blogged a kind of "epic manifesto" about the shabby treatment she has received as a female musician/celebrity, presumably at the hands of men (both in and out of the industry). http://actuallygrimes.tumblr.com/post/48744769552/i-dont-want-to-have-to-compromise-my-morals-in Is that what people are talking about? This actually makes it doubly interesting that she's touring with LDR in light of all the Kim Gordon crap of late; however, it's always been about the possibility of a musical interaction between the two that excites me most. Maybe not on tour, but later.
  23. Listen at 12:30 No Mark Ronson but beautiful music. https://soundcloud.com/triple_j/mark-ronson-talks-new-music-collabs-and-failing-at-athletics edit: whoops, old news apparently.
  24. Hate EP is out. The 3 new songs are strong, imo. My only complaint is he hasn't got around to posting the lyrics (Darlin (I'm fine) needs them) and other credits yet. For now, you can listen to his EP at his website http://www.nightmareboy.com/ and on Spotify.
