Norman Fucking Rockwell - Pre-Release Thread

I know that the Lust For Life era is officially over but it's crazy to me that there's another version of the album out there, like the 13 Beaches, Summer Bummer, Beautiful People and Tomorrow Never Came demos (all of which have different lyrics and different styles to the final versions)... -
I adore MAC, so excited to hear what's next

She also returned to Lizzy in HBTB... "lights, camera, accion". -

I wouldn't say Change is her worst, I think it could be better, but it was very last minute and didn't have time to be developed to it's fullest (you would all be begging for it if she had teased it and not included it on LFL ahaha). But I do think she has weaker songs on LFL and throughout her discography... In My Feelings, Coachella, 24, Blue Velvet and The Other Woman (even though they're covers). -
Lana spotted in Beverly Hills - September 13, 2018

Fuck Fashion, Let's Smoke Menthols. I think is what it says, let's hope this is a Venice Bitch situation and that's actually a song title aha. -

Ah okay that's a little clearer, I mean like the interviewer from Pitchfork, the majority of people were under the impression that the LFL album was "happier", the lead single, the album art, the title. And maybe she was unsure whether it was happiness she was presenting at that time? I think this album is 100% Lana doing what she wants and I expect the tone and mood to be heavier than LFL but the sentiment will still be positive and hopeful. -

I quite like that she drip feeds us information through interviews etc. Obviously things didn't go to plan with Lust For Life, the May 26th release was obviously confirmed by Lana and her team before those articles were published, just like in almost interview leading up to May she said that Yosemite was her favourite song on the record. I was frustrated that she kept quiet up until the rumoured release date but maybe that's because they believed the album may have been completed in time. -

Like I get what you're saying but I don't if that makes sense aha. It seems almost contradictory of itself... You want Lana to make the music she wants, but you're not willing to accept that this shift in tone is her decision? I think her "happier" sound is the most pure her music has ever been and I really don't think she's being pushed by fans or is trying to please critics. I understand that you miss her older style (and you're not alone) but to discredit her new sound and suggest it's not genuine because you don't like it is a little, I dunno. -

No, I think they're definitely on the album, the press release that Fader had said that 2 new singles would be released with the album to follow, surely if these were stand alones the press release would've said so? -

I think it's because MAC isn't the lead single and I don't think a release for it was planned... Lana said herself that she didn't expect the song to be played on radio and that she just put it out for herself, so she probably saw an opportunity with the scrapped HIAB music video and made us a little visual and then got Chuck to take a quick photo. I'm expecting the real music videos to begin with Venice Bitch. -

I don't ever seeing it happen, the market has changed and nobody really releases greatest hits albums anymore... Maybe once she retires (her label will try and cash in) but I wouldn't be expecting and GH albums soon. -

I just think that because she has so many and such different styles it would be difficult for her to form a cohesive body of work for the fans. That's why if she were going to do it, I'd rather it just be outtakes from each album, like Yosemite, BAR, RBFY, LIB, Your Girl, AFFA, Hollywood, YCBTB etc. -

I'd love for her to have turned some unreleased songs into poems, like RBFY or Yosemite... I was never keen on an unreleased album anyways, I think it ruin her discography, unless it was just outtakes from each album (BTD onwards). -
Pop 2 would've been so much better without all the collaborations, keep Tove Lo, cupcakKe and MO and go solo for the rest. The collaborations and messiness is what makes it my least favourite out of the two mixtapes (N1A and Pop 2).

The more thought I've put into it, the more I don't think it's the lead - There would have been more buzz and I presume an official music video (not the visual we got). I think she just wanted to introduce the era and this is the perfect first song to give us a teaser of what's to come. I think Venice Bitch will be the lead single and that's why they chose not release the tracks on the same day to avoid confusion? Lana herself said she didn't expect the song to be played on radio, so surely if this was the lead single, promotion would've been prepared in advance. And I do believe MAC will be on the album, people seem sceptical but it wouldn't make sense to drop this a week before the potential lead single and not include it on the track list? She's clearly very proud of the song and the message it's sending out (like she was with Coachella), so I see it on the album. I also don't see there being much promo in terms of Venice Bitch, I think she and her label know she's an albums artist and her dropping singles doesn't matter at all once the album is released... (See the Honeymoon and Lust For Life era's). I think that's why its kinda cool and logical (from a business perspective) to drop singles months in advance before the record. It allows some longevity for the era and I think we can expect more visuals this time with the album not coming til next year. I anticipate 4 singles (including MAC and VB) to be released before the album and then she'll either tour or just do festivals and no more singles or videos will be released. -

I don't think she'll ever do bonus tracks or deluxe editions again, I'm anticipating either a 10 track record or 16 track record. -

I wouldn't mind self titled, as I'd see it as a statement, this is her re-evaluating who Lana Del Rey is. But I would love for a new album title! Whatever the record is called, it's gonna be titled better than the majority of major releases this year. -

Hmmm, I do like the sentiment of MAC opening the record, but I really want to her keep the theme going, Born To Die was track 1, Ultraviolence was track 2, Honeymoon was track 1 and Lust For Life was track 2... Suggesting that track 1 of this record is the album title? Unless it is self titled which I would really love. Let's hope she drops the album on BTD's birthday... Show the world her growth. -

I would love another 16 track record, BTD (15), UV (16), HM (14) and LFL (16) proves that she can produce extensive and cohesive projects, I genuinely believe that LFL is a great record, I just wish they'd revised the tracklist more thoroughly. -
Like it baffles me that people still believe that XCX3 was gonna be her career defining moment... If it had've been released it would've charted top 20, scraped top 10 in the UK if it was lucky. It's biggest hit would've been ATAP or Boys, both only just making top 30. And I know she was mad at the label at the time, but she has grown so much as an artist since Vroom Vroom and N1A, so if they had've released XCX3 in 2017 it would've felt like a major step back. She's tried her best to develop as an artist whilst keeping fans happy (dropping NA and GNO etc), but people still seem to be unhappy with her output.
-
But she does hate promo, she legit said it herself. And who's to say she isn't happy, she's dropping new music and having fun. Just because she hasn't released R&R or Taxi, doesn't mean she hates her contract and wants to be freed And why move to an experimental label, when she's clearly making good money as an artist and a writer with Atlantic... plus she has more opportunities signed to a major, like the Rep tour.
-
I don't think there's any point in her trying to get out of her contract with Atlantic, what is the chance of her getting signed to another major label and having success? She's kinda already admitted that she can't sing and she's not really a streaming force and chart smashing artist. At least with Atlantic she's releasing some form of music whether that be mixtapes or singles. Plus in the BBC documentary she said she hates promo etc. So she probably enjoys just dropping singles and mixtapes on streaming services, rather than launching an album campaign... Who's to say it is just the label that doesn't want to release the album. (although it would be nice for more music videos and stuff) I think the monthly drops were never intended to lead up to a project, I think she just dropped some new tracks for promo before the Rep tour and then chucked out No Angel and GNO for the fans, so she could catch a break. Would a headline tour even be successful? I remember when she toured the UK in 2014 for Sucker, doing academies and Uni bars etc. And I don't think she sold out or anything, I get her fanbase has grown since then, but her label probably don't see enough commercial appeal or value to launch a solo tour, especially if there's no intention to release an album.

I'd love Yosemite to be the closing track of this record, it's obviously very dear to her... And even if she's still not quite in that space, she's a step closer and would be a nice notion to carry into the future releases (like Get Free) -

I think it might just be water... I'd kinda love that though, it's pure and free, could also represent her cleansing herself and accepting the natural self. I also think water / beaches are important to her (as an escapism thing, HBTB, 13 Beaches etc.) and there's a lot of references to water in the song and the video for MAC. Plus LFL ended with the sound of waves crashing and birds...
