No one confirmed BB was recorded with Dan.

Throughout the years albums have been released less frequently though. So that made up for 9 song albums, you'd get a new album nearly every year. I guess the 80s were the tail end of that because there were larger gaps. I don't know how people dealt with it back then. It's kind of weird, it's easier than ever to make professional recordings but now it takes so much longer.

Haha do you think? I don't know if DA has it in him, but I thought maybe too! I've ran into him a few times out at night but never got that impression but who knows...That was back when he still was married too. Does anyone remember that Black Beauty snippet on Soundcloud with the spanish guitar? It had Lana's vocals and it was a different take, but I never really followed up on it to see if it was real or not. I like BB the way it is but I wouldn't mind if that version were the one released...

Not written, just performed and recorded.

Paramore skirts pop rules sometimes, they have some leeway. I'm kind of under the impression that Lana went to her usual producers then kind of recklessly took everything to Dan in Nashville and just ran with it. Whether or not that's true, it just seems weird to me that she had recording sessions and apparently scraped nearly all of them. Usually a pop artist might ditch one producer or something but to just go all in on one is pretty rare...I can't think of anyone unless they already had a very close relationship.

Yeah I admit some of the title seem cheesy. But it is Lana and that is part of the package sometimes. Black Beauty is pretty mature lyrically but West Coast is about on par with BTD, I think. Don't get me wrong, she's always had moments but Black Beauty seemed to signal a progression. So maybe that's another reason BB was left off as an extra. What was the deal with the Old Money? Didn't somebody come around here saying it would be on there and people didn't believe them? I don't think Guns And Roses is Roses either, sorry to say. There's enough Axl Rose references that it could be anything, it's just a theme she's explored but never fully committed to on album until now.

I wonder if Florida Kilos will be a manifestation of Daytona Meth/Every Man Gets His Wish/Hawaiian Tropic. She recycled that theme and general lyrics over those three times that I think she might use it somehow. I think she made Black Beauty a bonus track because it leaked, but it will also be a different version.

She played Radio? She hasn't played that or Without You on this tour though...

^ Same, thanks!

I always think there's multiple kinds of "sad musicians". Lana has always been, to me, on the more impressionistic side. She paints the scene/mood and let's the person find the sadness kind of within it. More of a Monet than a Rembrandt. I like Yayo, Gramma (Reminds me of mid-70s Dylan a bit and Lana), Black Beauty. Even within those, there's hope or a silver lining. It's hard to find a really personally hopeless song; she might not really have one. That's fine though. I don't know, it's hard to really differentiate between contrived and genuine and I sway towards the older stuff with determining the genuine sadness or at least genuine motivation behind it. A lot of songs can easily be written off as "sadcore" or sad but are they really sad though? Reminds me of the early 2000s when people called bands like Interpol or Strokes "sad" when they were more "dark" than "sad"...

Well it will be a west coast show that she will play more songs from UV from (assuming it'll be released by then).

Ultraviolence - Pre-Release Thread

I figure there might be a nod or two but that's it. I do like the LDR/ULTRAVIOLENCE style, I think I called that a while ago. The painted version looks bad but I have an idea that'll it probably look better on the album or in print. -
I don't like it either, the original is okay though (I'll listen to it but it's not something I seek out). Getting tickets to her show is proving to be ridiculous ugh.

If the album is Clockwork Orange influenced, it wouldn't be unheard of to lead in with Beethoven's 9th in Walter/Wendy Carlos's analog synth style as background music. It's been done before my some artists. Edit: Not on the album I mean, I mean live once UV is released. -
I think she favors the right because there's a bit more energy on that side with the guitar. But I do agree. I think we missed the high synth on "West Coast" because the band just doesn't have it. The guy seemed behind a baby grand but I kind of figured it might be retrofitted with a MIDI controller with Logic/Ableton off-stage. If that's the case, there's no excuse. I did miss it as well though I'm a few years older than 24, but I had a good time. A lot of the girls were really nice to me (I went solo, everyone I know hates Lana) and I hung out with some nice people. I was in the middle of the fight and that was something else. Once it started, people just piled in but it broke up fairly quickly. Some people got into the fighting spirit right away but most people just stopped after a few minutes. Security escorted the girls out fairly quickly, so I think some people restrained themselves fairly quickly. It did last nearly the entire length of Y&B though. I've got a video of the shit talking in the background while Lana starts up the song. It was weird to see all the smaller girls wait and guard their front row spots then after the first 3-4 songs, people were haggardly coming out of the front row. I think after this album, she'll play somewhere bigger hopefully. I think the Fox is bigger but Oakland isn't as cool as SF. There's always the Oracle arena... I thought it was kind of sweet how Lana said she didn't deserve it but she'll take it anyway. It's hard to find the line between schtick and sincerity with her a lot (don't get me wrong, the shtick is fun though) but that seemed a bit more sincere to me. I wish she liked the Bay more. It seems up her alley in terms of history and stuff. I can't imagine how QOTSA sounded the night before in that venue. It's just terrible for rock music. Anything more synth-based (I've seen some EDM, Hip Hop, and Pop there) all have been good though.

I think Cruel World is more influenced by Chris Isaak's Wicked Game than anything else so far. It'll be interesting to hear more of it since she really just kind of made this an intro to Cola.
-
Ah good ear. Too bad, really thought it was different!
-
Not me in the denim. I don't think I saw any of you going by descriptions... I don't think she did photos, just signed stuff and accepted gifts. The stage didn't really lend itself to taking good photos with people in the first row. I think she did come down once but it was hard to tell really.
-
It happened a good half hour or so before she came on. Everyone talked over it and seemed to ignore it, so it was hard to hear it sometimes. Like someone else mentioned, a lot of people complained about the old music, then got into it when Snoop Dogg and Eminem tracks were played between.
-
The song I mentioned playing beforehand was a Lana cover of Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang". It was definitely Lana's voice and the instrumentation was different than Sinatra's version but still very minimal.

The Bill Graham's a weird venue. It's a not the worst sound in the Bay (people say that's the Fox Theatre in Oakland), but it's very much just a concrete floor and giant stage. I don't think acoustics were very well planned out compared to even regular venues. Unfortunately, it's one of the few large venues in the city and usually booked for EDM or pop music. As far as your place, just don't get stuck in bad spots (usually the middle-back) where it all kind of washes together. It might be totally better or differently laid out. Anyway, I didn't see her. I hung around very briefly but I kind of had a feeling she wouldn't be around, so I ran to catch the BART. :-\ The little girl had a flower crown, so definitely could have been her.
-
I moved all over. I was fortunate to get about 4-5 rows in the front and be able to get back around that area, otherwise I moved around a bit from both sides and the back.
-
No it was a studio version. I heard Cruel World and it wasn't that, but this was before the show without her there and while everything's getting set up.

Setlist 0. (Cruel World) 1. Cola 2. Body Electric 3. Blue Jeans 4. West Coast 5. Born to Die 6. Young and Beautiful 7. Million Dollar Man 8. Gods and Monsters 9. Ride 10. Summertime Sadness 11. Video Games 12. Carmen 13. National Anthem Absolutely packed. The sound was not good. Lana frequently asked for levels to be raised on her and parts of the band throughout the night. There was a lot of mic feedback particularly in the beginning. The auditorium made it hard to hear songs cohesively. The songs were loud but at some areas of the GA floor, it sounded too reverby and it wasn't very good. However, other areas sounded fine, crisp, and pretty hard sonically. Lots of people singing along, the first 4-5 songs had nearly constant screaming and yelling from the crowd. Hard to hear Lana sometimes. Lots of weed smoke (welcome to SF), I saw about a year old baby there with gun headphones on, and a giant brawl broke out on the right side of the audience during nearly the entirety of Young & Beautiful. Multiple people were escorted out. I was in the middle of it; it was because a lot of girls were on top of boys' shoulders and people behind couldn't see. A relatively small girl and really tall girl (who couldn't see over) got into it verbally then the hair grabbing and punches followed. Then about 50 people joined in. Crazy to witness and a bit weird with Lana's singing Y&B to it. Finally, I thought I heard a new Lana song played before she came on. There were no openers, so it was just Lana's warmup music. Lots of typical Lana style songs but well recognized, except for one. It was slow but not really balladly. Seemed to base itself around piano and an organy-synth (Hammond organ?) and it really sounded to me like Lana's vocals and style. It wasn't very rockish either. I'm unsure but it definitely struck me as odd when I heard it. Highlights were Gods & Monsters, West Coast, and Body Electric came more alive for me live (I'm not a big fan of it on the record). I didn't see a topic, so share your stories, thoughts, etc.

Sounds great! This bodes well for the rest of the album, I think.
