This song sounds like some producer gave her 15 minutes to write lyrics and test them out or something. I only listen to it because it comes on right after Serial Killer on my playlist. I always think this is such a weird little song. The intro is totally out of place and the rest of it reminds me of a Kylie Minogue b-side.

All right, so can anyone tell me exactly how he made his fortune? I get that he sells houses, which a lot of people do after making an initial sum because it's pretty stable and you can increase your money. He bought a ton of generic domain names when the internet was still in its infancy and seems to just squat them. His websites look really dated, they don't seem updated (at least in look and coding standards) since the mid-late 90s when I assume he bought all these domains. I just don't get how he made so much off domain squatting.

Ultraviolence - Pre-Release Thread

Everyone likes Beyonce, so she can do that. Not as much many people (in North America at least) like LDR. Also Beyonce has been around for what 15 years now? Lana just can't do what Beyonce did. Very few entertainers that aren't largely self-sufficient (i.e. not on a major, around a long time, label gives them a vanity label even) could do it. Jay-Z tried to be unconventional with his last album by releasing through phones first and that didn't really work well. So even as a big artist, unconventional moves like that are risky. As much as I like LDR (and not Beyonce gasp), she's nowhere near Beyonce's level. Plus with Lana making a mini-comeback in the US, I bet Interscope/Universal want to play it safe and calculated. -

I don't see anything listed for 2014? I think I'm misunderstanding your post. Anyway, I don't think it would be unheard of to get a busy month of announcements come Spring with a tour and the first single, etc. -

She might do a small string of US dates in Spring then do the summer festival circuit. So it wouldn't be out of the question to have it out by late Spring-early Summer. You'll have a few teaser shows for fans and her/the band to test the waters, the album drops, she plays festivals to get the general public into her again. I think she's going to be at the mercy of the label on this one. -
Paradise doesn't stand a chance in hell, but Young and Beautiful I think is a serious contender with Skyfall. Although, it probably won't win, they're definitely the strongest two of the bunch. The nod to Paradise seems more like encouragement from the Grammy board than a serious nomination to me. It's lucky to call it an EP and while it has good songs, it's far from best album of the year material. It's definitely the sleeper in that category.

I wanted to like it and I get that it's really self-indulgent and that's part of the treat...but the editing and effects really turned me off of it. At least the Body Electric and Bel Air scenes. It felt like this was bathed in baby's first After Effects quite a bit. Ride wasn't like that at all and was much better for it. Anyway, it was a fun little film mostly for the fans. Let's bring on Ultraviolence. I feel this got overhyped because of the delays. I think Lana in a Fellini-esque short film would be awesome to whoever mentioned him. The posters made me think this film would be more influenced by French New Wave à la Truffaut or Godard, but it wasn't anywhere close.

How many songs has she not written by herself? I'm a bit disappointed. I know her lyrics sometimes seem cut-and-paste of very specific motifs and are repeated often. But still, you think there's an underlying "thing" underneath. A lot of great artists do that and it's something that attracted to me Lana's music. You get the feeling the artist is digging towards a certain idea more and more and there's something internally important about whatever idea/turn of phrase/etc. that the artist uses so much. Sometimes I go between thinking that she's really dumb/ditzy or really more intelligent than people give her credit for. I don't believe there's any kind of editor for the most part because a lot of her lyrics are wonky and awkward. There's some charm in that. I'd concede that probably stuff from BTD and Paradise got a look-over. Also disappointed in this guy. It's pretty unprofessional of him to be like this, so that makes me doubt his credibility somewhat (but you cannot deny his job title). It's disheartening to see Lana passing off Coney Island references to some trust fund 23 year old with good looks. Edit: also overall -- I hope to hear "Black Beauty" at least on this album near it's original leak. It gives me female Leonard Cohen vibes which I think Lana would be in favor of. Ultraviolence definitely seems influenced by A Clockwork Orange. The feeling definitely feels more dance and electronic-oriented. It'd be interesting to see "Behind Closed Doors" on it. She spans such a breadth of genres in her back catalog; that's what is interesting. She could release like five different EPs with a solid set of songs of the same genre. So it's hard to guess where'd she go with this. She can go very electronic and almost touching that excellent SOHN remix of "Ride" like the final release of BCD sounds like (but I don't think he's the producer), to something like doo-wop/60s sound like "Queen of Disaster". There's a lot of stuff in between too. Also it's been mentioned that it might be rocky, which she has tons of solid material in too. I think Interscope will have a lot of sway with this one. She's starting to top the club charts, but that probably came after the recording of a decent portion of this album. The label is probably seeing her as a strong Top 40 contender now. That's why I think it will have quite a bit of electronic influence. The "debut" didn't land quite as well, but there's some redemption in her as a club act. It'd be stupid for Interscope not to try to target the demographic she's doing well in.
