In her haunting style, she could call the album "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Two of my personal favorites that I'd love to see her do covers of: Brenda Lee, "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" Bono: "Don't They Know It's Christmas"

Possibly... Of the few videos I've seen of Saturday's performance, I really didn't see her crack a smile at all... except when that guy shouted out "Lana, sit on my face!" right before "Million Dollar Man," and she lost it for a second. (Did you hear that guy in person? Were you up close enough? He must have been up close to the front, or she wouldn't have heard him.)

Many Ultraviolence songs were done in one take, but this goes back to Born To Die. (I don't have any previous songs of hers.) What's interesting, too, is that when she uses multi-layer vocal tracking, you can hear all of the Lanas breathing together. Kinda cool! Maybe I just listen more closely to Lana's music than others, since I like it so much, but I just noticed it moreso with her than with most others that I've listened to. (I've never listened to Lily Allen.) I don't find it disturbing in Lana's case. As I said originally, I actually like it with her; it adds a sultriness and sexiness to the words and the song.

Now that I have your attention... I know it sounds weird, but in listening to some of Lana's songs in comparison to other singers (I'm talking album recordings, not live), I've noticed that you hear her intakes of breath a lot more strongly than most other singers. Whether her breathing is naturally louder than others because she smokes, I don't know, but it makes me wonder if some others make it a point to back off of the mic a little when they breathe in, and Lana doesn't. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just something I noticed... it actually adds an air of realism, and, dare I say it, sexiness to her voice. She does it in "Once Upon a Dream" a lot, and in that song, it actually adds to the haunting quality. Any thoughts/opinions?

I know I said this before, but I'll say it again: "Old Money" was my favorite song of the concert, by far. Having listened to recordings of both, I have to say that I liked Friday night's version better than Saturday, and that's not just because I was there on Friday. I thought it was interesting how, in the second verse, on Friday night, she changed the lyrics from "those summer nights" to "those Jersey nights," but did not do that on Saturday.

Considering how busy she's been with touring and with the initial release of the album (and having re-recorded most of it earlier this year with Dan Auerbach), it's not surprising that not much else has come from it yet. I think we just need to give it some time. So far we already have videos for "Ultraviolence" and "Shades of Cool," I'm sure others will eventually come along.

I'd like to see (and hear) her cover "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. It's my favorite song from the musical, and when sung right, conveys a lot of emotion. I think Lana would be perfect to sing that.

Maybe not... although she doesn't perform it all the time, so maybe it will eventually fall by the wayside. Eventually, of course, as she releases more albums, she won't be able to perform as many songs from the current album and still keep her fans happy with some "classics." The more albums you release, the fewer from each one you can perform live. LOL, good question. "Blue Jeans" was her standard opener for a while, then it got replaced by "Cola" after Paradise came out. Now, she's mostly transitioning to "Cruel World" as her opener, with "Cola" following it, and then "Blue Jeans." My guess is that "Cola" and "Blue Jeans" will eventually drop off. I disagree about dropping *all* BTD/Paradise songs, but I do agree that it would be nice to hear some different ones. I don't think she has ever performed "Lucky Ones" live. That's one of my personal favorites from BTD, and I'd love to hear a live performance of that one someday. But I'm not holding my breath. "Gods and Monsters" may, as you say, become one she performs more often, although by the time she starts touring again, the AHS performance may be long forgotten. I don't think it's a question of laziness. Could have to do with her record label, too -- maybe they have more influence on which songs she performs. But there's a difference between laziness and a comfort zone. Now that she's done touring, maybe she'll practice UV songs with her band and build up a comfort level that will allow her to perform more of them live. If that were the case, she wouldn't be performing so many of the older songs (unless her label is forcing her to). She may be over the era as a whole, but I think she still loves the songs.

I meant to say that we don't necessarily *have* to have an "Ultraviolence Tour;" it could just be another tour in general. I was under the impression that the "Paradise Tour" had pretty much ended late last year. I think one thing that marked the end of that "era" was the band she used for live concerts. For BTD/Paradise songs, she almost always had a live string quartet along with the rest of the band, since those songs were string-heavy. Since she started performing some of the UV songs, the string quartet disappeared, and for the songs that used strings, she used pre-recorded tracks (e.g. the beginning of "Born To Die"). Other songs, like "National Anthem," they rearranged where they didn't need the string sounds. So you're figuring that on her next tour, she'll perform more songs from Ultraviolence and less from the rest. That's certainly plausible. Do you think an EP is likely? That would make a for a good concert! I wonder if she'll still do "National Anthem," since that seems to be her go-to ending song. "Ride" might disappear. "Video Games" and "Summertime Sadness" are like staple songs for her; those will probably always be there, and probably "Born To Die" as well. Some of the other songs she still does now, like "Blue Jeans," "Cola," and "Body Electric" may fall away and be replaced with more UV songs. Awww, I like "Young and Beautiful!" It's actually my favorite LDR song. But she' hasn't performed that lately, so I think that one's already pretty much gone. Maybe she'll do some smaller venue performances again, like the Amoeba, to gain confidence in some of the UV songs she hasn't performed live yet. I'd like to see "Brooklyn Baby" and "Black Beauty" (even though the latter is a bonus track) be added to her live set. I'd also love to see "Flipside" and "Is This Happiness," but those are also bonus tracks and not likely to appear. One can hope, though! Well, UV is still new, and as some have pointed out, she seems to still be doing the Paradise Tour, despite the change in instrumentation. Perhaps she's doing a slow transition... I'm with you there! I like UV, but I like the style of BTD/Paradise better myself. And I'm sure there are others out there as well who feel the same way, and Lana knows that, which is why she'll continue to mix in her old songs along with UV songs (and future new album songs) as long as she performs live. Perhaps. What's interesting is that she has done more UV songs outside of the US, like FMWUTTT. As I mentioned above, I think songs like "Cola," "Body Electric," and "Ride" will eventually disappear. Someone else cited "Carmen" and "Million Dollar Man" as well.

Hey everyone, I apologize if a similar topic to this is around, but I wasn't able to find it. It has come up during some of the "Shows" threads, but I thought perhaps it deserves its own thread. A lot of people have been discussing disappointment at how Lana hasn't been singing more Ultraviolence songs during her recent concerts. I know "Shades of Cool" was debuted live at Hollywood Forever on October 18. For the most part, though, she has generally only sung about 4 or 5 UV songs, and the rest have been from Born To Die and Paradise (and the occasional cover). Here's what I have to say about that: So what? I'm probably going to get flamed for this... But let's think about it. Pretty much any artist you see will perform both older and newer songs when they give a concert. We're not all going to go to every single LDR concert, and she knows that, just like any other artist. For example, I've seen Weird Al in concert 4 times, the first time being 1997 or 98, and every single time, he has sung either "Fat" or "Eat It" (or both), despite those being among his older hits. Why? Because the fans like them! He's trying to appeal to the older and newer fans alike, and to those who like his older music and his newer music. Of course, LDR doesn't have as many albums out and hasn't been around as long, but she still knows that there are people who attend her concerts who LOVE the Born To Die and Paradise music just as much, if not moreso, than the Ultraviolence music. And, of course, there are those who like the UV music better. My point is that she wants to appeal to as much of her audience as she can. There's nothing that says she has to do an "Ultraviolence Tour" in which she ONLY sings UV songs. I'd bet that if she's still performing live 20 years from now, she'll still sing "Video Games" at every concert. Why? Because there will be people who WANT to hear it. Some have also said that her set list is boring, because it is largely unchanged. There's a reason for that, too: If an artist performs more-or-less the same songs each time, the songs will only get better and better. They can also make subtle changes in notes, durations, and even lyrics, without throwing off the rest of the band. They're just that comfortable with the music that they can handle little alterations without any problem. And of course, Lana herself won't forget the words to a song she's sung 1000 times, right? Discussion welcome!

I don't recall if Lana has cited Lou Reed as one of her influences, but I just made a connection today that probably seems obvious to everyone else. Sorry, I'm kinda dense at times. I've heard the song "Walk on the Wild Side" a bazillion times on the radio, but never knew it was by Lou Reed! So, I'm guessing that the lyric "Baby take a walk on the wild side" in "Born To Die" is an homage, or at least a reference, to Lou Reed...? I made the discovery today because a friend of mine is performing in the musical "Bright Star," which is a collaboration between Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. I looked up Edie Brickell on Wikipedia, and saw that she had done a cover of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side," and that was when I learned that that song was by him!

The words "F---ing crazy" appear in at least 3 songs (these are the ones I've heard): Ride: "I'm tired of feeling like I'm f---ing crazy" Cruel World: "'Cause you're young, you're wild, you're free / You're dancin' circles around me / You're f---ing crazy" Is This Happiness: "You think you're Hunter S. Thompson / I think you're f---ing crazy as the day is long" And just the word "crazy" also appears in "Flipside," and many others, I'm sure...

Could be... I suppose Francesco could go with her, but maybe he's got too busy a schedule and can't do it. Barrie's band was her opening act at one point. I think Lana's dad and sister accompanied her on this last tour... at least they were in LA, because Rob was posting pictures on Twitter, and Chuck was taking pictures of the crowd. There's no confirmation that that's what she has. It was just some people's speculation. If she does, though, all the coffee she drinks isn't helping it, either. But again, no confirmation, just speculation.

Flipside! Just heard this song for the first time the other day. I love it! Enough so that even though I already purchased Ultraviolence through iTunes, I bought it again from Target so I could legitimately own "Flipside." I guess that more than makes up for having obtained the radio mix version of "West Coast" without buying it...

Definitely! Everyone does. I don't think she hates touring. I don't think she'd do anything she didn't enjoy. I suppose some touring may be part of her record label contract, but knowing her, I don't think she'd be touring if she hated it. As Paradixo pointed out, she doesn't like the media and doesn't seem to like doing TV interviews. That's probably why we haven't seen more of that lately, which corroborates my theory of her not doing things she doesn't want to. She likes to be in control. 5th album? What about the 4th? Or are you being sarcastic?

Personally, I think there are parts she likes and parts she doesn't. Recall that earlier this year, she talked about how she was (is?) suffering from a mystery illness that plagues her when she's on tour. Some have speculated that it's a stomach ulcer, a la Kurt Cobain, but nothing has been confirmed. (She's been pretty tight-lipped on the specifics.) It's not even certain whether that same illness is what made her cancel her European appearances last month. There may be days that she feels great, and others where she doesn't, and I'm sure that affects her mood on stage. Perhaps when she's not feeling well, it reflects in the mood on stage and she appears to be over the whole concept of touring. But she has also said on many occasions that she loves her fans and their support, and I can't imagine her not wanting to continue that interaction. I can imagine, though, that she's probably tired of the paparazzi following her around everywhere, though, especially in New York. I've seen older videos from 2012 and 2013 where they talk to her and she talks to them and is friendly and cordial with them. But in more recent videos, her air is more of a "leave me the f--- alone!" So perhaps she's just tired of being in the media spotlight so much? Especially since they seem to love to delve into her personal life, i.e. her relation ship with Francesco Carrozzini and how they were making it seem like he was cheating on her, etc. etc. That kind of stuff would grow tiresome for anyone after a while. Perhaps she regrets that part of stardom, but the rest? Nah, I doubt it.

We've been to Mission Viejo a couple of times, both while on route elsewhere. Many years ago, we stopped at the Sport Chalet there right off the 5 around Oso Parkway (I think) to get some stuff on our way to Lake Tahoe, and earlier this year, met a friend at a restaurant there for lunch on our way to Torrance.
