another longtime sky fan here, so i know your pain! 4 YEARS waiting for a true sky album! it's been a wonderful, sometimes frustrating, ride, but i'm so happy and excited it's finally gonna happen! <3 i agree that it's good that more people know and appreciate her now...how could anyone be so selfish as to not wish her to get the recognition her talent has deserved for so long??No, I don't hate you, I love you! You're a Sky fan so I already love you. The only thing kind of "fan" that bothers me are the ones that do not accept what the real fans say or want to state their opinion and their information as real.
But I appreciate that more people are getting into her now, I'm not the hipster type that says they hate when their favorite artists become mainstream.
Even though the wait for her album has been really, really long, I like it because I was able to see Sky evolving as an artist and growing as an adult. I feel so jealous of her, I feel like she's mine.

I still love this, Ines!
Thank you for sharing it here.
(Is it weird that I find more meaning in this combination than I do in either video alone?)
i totally agree! maybe we're both weird

it all sounded a bit implausible, but the collaboration with lady gaga is what immediately revealed its aprilfoolery
p.s. so glad it isn't true: i want the stripped-down spiritual album

Have u guys ever seen this? I love her choices, her singing i'm on fire would b like crack 2 me tbh
http://www.thecurrent.org/feature/2012/11/13/lana-del-ray-theft-of-the-dial
Even has an interview I've never heard
She said of Sinatra's "It was a very good year" - "It's the only cover we do, me and my band, besides an Elvis song." This was after doing Heart-shaped Box so idk what she's talking about lol, maybe recordings?
PS Ednafrau she said if anyone she meets listens to Jeff Buckley, it's how she knows she's found a soul mate. ^_^
wonderful find, TPD!
i can't listen to it now but i already love her choice of songs...and i'm floored she said that about JB: i used to say the same thing!
and, in fact, the second person i met that loved jeff buckley was indeed my soulmate and we've been together for more than 10 years ♥ (the first one, who was a fan and actually saw jeff live in paris, which i took as a sign, was just an intense fling that tore my heart out but paved the way, just a few months later, for the real thing! life and its strange ways...

Yes, please.
I love her voice with subtler arrangements. I've always felt all the Emile Haynie sample bullshit distracted quite a bit from just how lovely her voice is.
Yes, Lizzy performed a cover at a Leonard Cohen tribute night at Mr. Dennehy's Underground on November 5, 2008. I contacted the person who organized it and he told me she did a solo cover of "Dance Me to the End of Love":
He gave the impression that was the only song she covered, but didn't explicitly say so, so I'll ask.
A+ response, evil!
i signed up just to comment...here's what i wrote: http://junkee.com/lana-del-rey-covers-leonard-cohen-cue-outrage/3636#comment-845276047
super research, btw...i would love to hear her cover of "dance me to the end of love"!
i'm sure someone somewhere has it recorded. may they have a generous heart and one day share it with the world.
i've said before that i think after "dreamland" - or whatever her new album will be called - lana should release a covers album, a la cat power. i know for sure it would be amazing and top-notch, because she conveys such love for the art she admires and is inspired by. i want a jeff buckley song on that album - and her little (the zombies) "time of the season" bit left me dying for a complete version! she really interpets the feeling of the original material and makes it her own (skeeter davis's "the end of the world" is a heartfelt - and heartbreaking - example). anyway, love this musical surprise she regaled us with ♥

Amazing, ill check him out, thanks for contributing!
What are your lowest and highest notes? I have really been wanting to take a lesson to lean more about my range, as you said! But I feel a little embarrassed because I am 20.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Lana's range!
i adore her range and agree with what was discussed here! she is singular ♥ i have to leave now, but will return
please do take those classes - FYI i was 27 when i started
you really won't regret it...i postponed it for years because i thought "if i didn't learn when i was younger..." and it's just ridiculous, because you love it and you'd be doing it for yourself and that is so fulfilling!

MermaidTrailerHeaven, I just now discovered this thread & I love it!!
I took singing lessons for a few years and there I discovered I was a mezzo-soprano - in layman's terms: you can reach the high notes AND the low notes. thing is, I could never reach the really high notes with other people watching me - the opposite of lana! those vocal heights make me nervous and my throat kind of constricts my vocal chords. alone, however, i can do it
i recommend anyone who loves to sing and is curious about their range to take a few classes to know what you are - and see how much you can train your voice and extend its capabilities,to discover its full potential ♥
I, too, am a fan of voices and great singers - my absolute favorite is Jeff Buckley, whose vocal range was four octaves! if you love amazing singers you must know him...he's one of lana's faves, as well.
here's a link on his range and vocal style: http://www.jeffbuckley.com/rfuller/buckley/faq/07vocals.html
kinda OT, but if you just wanna check out the most vocally awesome songs, this part of his Wikipedia entry is useful:
"Buckley's voice was a particularly distinguished aspect of his music. He possessed a tenor vocal range,[110] he had a vocal range of between three and a half to four octaves. Buckley made full use of this range in his performance, particularly in the songs from Grace, and reached peaks of high E in the tenor range at the culmination of "Grace" and "So Real". These high notes were unusual for a rock musician in that he sung them with his head voice, rather than in a falsetto, and that he sung them for sustained periods. "Corpus Christi Carol" was sung entirely in a high falsetto. The pitch and volume of his singing was also highly variable, as songs such as "Mojo Pin" and "Dream Brother" began with mid-range quieter vocals before reaching louder, higher peaks near the ending of the songs."

Get Drunk & Motel 6 (Studio) stream of consciousness
I'm thinking that Motel 6 is about Arthur Lynn.. like someone mentioned before. Baby, you can buy me Diet Mt Dew; in the spotlight we see Jim & Chuck.. thinking more and more that Lizzy was originally with Arthur but Jimmy caught her eye..
However, Diet Mt Dew + Greenwich + Motel 6 are all probably about the same person, and I was thinking Greenwich + Diet Mt Dew were about Mike, given that Lana talked about making a trip to Greenwich on her FB around the time she was with Mike and when the song may have been written.
Aw, shit. Edit: Just found a location on Arthur in Greenwich, CT!!
And then who is Bill that Arthur referenced in his blog (entitled Diet Mt Dew)? Is it possible that Jimmy was actually dating Chuck and Lana just thought he was hot? (This doesn't seem as likely in my opinion- for some reason I picture Chuck going for a square guy) I don't know if I believe Reeve and Lizzy were anything more than a friendship, either.
Then there is also "Get Drunk"... which friendship is this about?? Nick Fowler & Arthur Lynn, Arthur Lynn & Jimmy Gnecco, or Jimmy Gnecco & Reeve? Possibly Chuck & Lizzy? (Long shot but Reeve and Chuck are still pretty close- maybe Lizzy slept with Reeve/Jimmy to Chuck's dismay?) Or none of the above? Personally, I think it is about Nick and Arthur.. especially if "A Star for Nick" is really entitled that (who knows?) .. sort of gives the idea that someone got her into dark things, and she knew he was never going to help her get where she wanted. Also, the way I found those pictures of Lana pre-nose job was on Nick's site.. and he still keeps them up. Seems kind of strange, given that Lana has consciously tried to keep these kinds of things from surfacing. It's under an album called "Lana Del Rey.. when she was still called Lizzy Grant" .. kind of seems like he's not coming from a nice place with that.
Arthur (pictured below) has had nothing but nice things to say about Lana (is that Jimmy on Lizzy's hat? Or Nick? So many broody musicians) since. Can't forget that some of Lana's inspirations were also in Arthur's pictures i.e. Diamond Dave, Axl Rose, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis, and even Britney Spears. Def. think that's the guy Lana was talking about who showed her about music.. if she didn't have a TV in the home, I guess she'd need somebody 2 educate her. (Not to mention he has a million Americana/flag pics) Too many possibilities but I find it all very interesting. We are the sum of our experiences and the people we meet.
Arthur's listed interests on one site: music, girls, guitars, america, diet mountain dew, van halen, ice cream, photography, jersey, angiescreams, indian summer, woods, food, freckles, the sun, the moon, seasons, amplifiers, family, friends, karma, october, yo mama, yo mama's apple pie, and those little people we call doggies
Still wondering if any songs could be about Jeff Buckley, since her, Jimmy, and Reeve all love(d) his music, Jimmy was his friend before he died, and Reeve is/was supposed to play him in a biopic, etc etc.. sigh.
so many awesome theories and brilliant connections, TPD!
i like the idea of some song(s) possibly being about jeff buckley...or maybe combining jeff with K, for example? perhaps some of the songs about her dead lover are about him? i had never thought of this
something random and unrelated, or not, is that "gods and monsters" is, coincidentally, the name of the first band that jeff buckley had (with gary lucas) when he first moved from CA to NYC
edit: i also think you've discovered that arthur's role in lizzy's life may have been bigger than all of us "lanalysts" had thought!

Everybody complains about how For K Part 2 does not tie in at all with the first. Maybe I was actually onto something!
and maybe it was sort of about Jimmy too, comparing him to Kurt. (Hence Rehab)
I always thought For K Part 2 was about Jimmy, because she's obviously referring to a musician (it could be Reeve, but it's less likely imo): "I like your music" and the "Use that voice, sing that song". You could say that in Sirens' Westbound she sings "You like to write about all of your problems/Put them in songs because you think it would solve them", implying that K (if it's about him) was also a musician, but the following line from Part 2 makes me discard that it's about him: the "Alright you got me, I don't play a good guitar" I think relates to her feelings of inadequacy at first ("like a groupie incognito posing as a real singer"), which would match her New York open mic nights and first shows, making this a Jimmy era composition. She was indeed electrified by him, especially in her starstruck beginnings
I know: so much speculation! but that's what we're left to do, become little Sherlocks and take bits and pieces of what we know and deduce away!
-
I used to think Million Dollar Man was about Jimmy (it coincides with some of her descriptions of him, fitting quite well with "Born to Die", which definitely sounds like it's about him), but then, since its timeline kind of coincides with her break up with Mike, I started to think it was about Mike, but then - remembering that Lana writes from the past even more than the present - I went back to thinking it's about Jimmy

damn, i'm in the middle of a really long translation, but when - in a tiny procrastination attack - i logged on to LB and saw that MONICKER was member of the week and actually answered the interview questions (
), i had no choice but to stop everything - and it was worth it! what a fascinating read
it was so insightful and thought-provoking and entertaining! and there are just too many things i agree with. since i was a little kid, i was, like, isn't it enough to just BE? anyway, i can't get into details because "me lleva la chingada", as the mexicans say, but monicker, you rock the casbah! #bowdown
p.s. i knew "shtetl" thanks to - you guessed it! - jeff buckley, because he played with john zorn and, through that collaboration i discovered him and well, it's an understatement to say that he is in a league of his own! i did not know the tammys, however, and i LOVED "egyptian zumba"! am d/ling their album right now on soulseek. gracias!!!

what a great surprise to wake up to!
the only thing that could've made it better would have been a little damian lewis flashback action
i'm so glad they released this as a single, i love it!
-
Yeah, me too. Do you think there's any significance to "Jim and Chuck", or are they just random shoutouts?
maybe chuck and jimmy gnecco were there in the studio while she was recording!

what a great exchange
thanks for sharing, monicker!
i love how he describes her in a way i hadn't thought of before, and what he says at the end about allowing yourself to be unpolished because capturing an idea that might slip away at any moment is what gives it its immediacy, the feeling of it being alive, as opposed to the overproduction that rids it of any "imperfection" and makes it less exciting and "real".

very interesting. a few years ago i was into numerology and there is definitely something to it. this analysis of lana seems pretty accurate. in fact, i think she or those around her - like her managers - are aware of numerology and perhaps the many changes in her stage name stemmed from changing around, adding or subtracting letters to make it have a better energy, more numerologically positive for achieving success. i don't think going from may jailer to lizzi grant to lizzy grant to lana ray, lana rey del mar, lana del ray to, finally, lana del rey, was simply due to indecisiveness. many companies consult serious numerologists to create or perhaps modify their names to make them better suited towards what they aspire to. lana del rey is perfect and has brand potential. thanks for sharing, antonia!

Bird Condo King, that's some amazing work you've done! You gave the album the booklet it deserved ♥
