David Sneddon from The Nexas talks about working with Lana in 2011

Recommended Posts

For anyone who might be interested in this new interview with The Nexus that was released yesterday which mentions Lana:

To sum it up the talking points:

- He was sent demos from his publishing (Sony) to try and get him and Lana to work together

- She was introduced to him as Lizzy Grant but by the time they actually met she was fully transformed into Lana Del Rey

- They did a 2 hour writing session for a song inspired by Sugababes

- Lana played them an early demo of Video Games

- Briefly touches on recording Nation Anthem (Would have have been 'I Want It All' version)

Transcript:

Spoiler

"What happened was uh when I first got sent the opportunity to work with Lana, well Lizzy Grant was her name and she did this song that she'd done on an acoustic guitar and it was brilliant but it wasn't Lana Del Rey. The publisher who sort of was trying to put us together was like "just just meet her and, do you know, some writing." by the time we had met with her and worked with her, she was a fully formed thing that she'd obviously invented for herself."

"Although, nobody in the music industry; literally nobody thought Lana was going to work. As soon as she played us some tunes me and my old writing partner James were immediately just like "this girl is class, like she's legit brilliant." and and she's still been young then, she'd have been like 23 and she had you know I remember her playing Born To Die and Diet Mountain Dew, she played she played a few of the songs that were on that first record and we loved it, but every record label had turned her down. Everybody."

"We got asked to write some super se- in fact I remember the brief they were like "can you do something with her that's a bit like sugar babes?" You look back on it doesn't make any sense and we were like what? And Lana didn't want to do that either but she was like "well fuck it, I guess we try it because like nothing else is working..." We did it for about 2 hours before everybody went "this is nonsense" sugar babes are brilliant but..."

"One of those moments, I'll never forget it-- we'd heard Born To Die and all those tunes, we hadn't written National Anthem yet but we had, like, we knew who she was, she sat down and she went "Oh, you know I did this song with another writer, Justin Parker, we did it at the end of the day it's a ballad." And she she played Video Games right, an early demo version, of it and me and my writing partner both went "this is world class songwriting, this is a different level to It." And she just stuck to her guns she knew who she was she knew her identity... And when that album was released and it was number one everywhere."

Interesting, thank you for sharing! I love their work together, and their versions of I Want it All still outsell imo xx

I believe this bit is referring to Sugababes, which is an English pop girl group that was popular in the 2000s, sort of similar to Girls Aloud. They were probably working towards a song reminiscent of the group’s sonic style, which was very much of that 2000s dance pop / R&B sound x

That makes more sense actually... cause Lana was all about sugarbaby/daddy during this time - just edited the thread

I wonder if we have this sugarbabes inspired song or if it was just completely scrapped

It depends what Sugarbabes they were trying to emulate too bc early sugarbabes had some incredible stuff.. definitely right up Lana's street.
