Pitchfork dixit: "After much speculation, a representative for Del Rey has confirmed that the singer-songwriter’s tweet was in reference to the occult ritual dates." Well, I started flipflopping on Lana since the botched UV era when she really infuriated me for the first time. I accepted her lies about her past as part of a struggle to be accepted, the fact that she fckd up her face which stems in a deep insecurity of hers that she isn't attractive enough. But some of her statements were just grating, useless trolling which revealed a self-obsessed personality, someone who enjoys the bittersweet state of faux-depression which originates in "problems" such as the one she revealed indirectly in an interview: “Lana Del Rey exits hotel with the most handsome man ever seen. Who is he?”. The other, more legitimate inner struggle of hers is why isn't she respected by the critics and the music business on the merit of arguably one great song (VG) albeit she wrote hundreds of repetitive and lazy lyrics?. She certainly has lyrical talent that she never exploited to a maximum because of her intellectual laziness, she has an interesting voice capable of wonders but she's not a great singer by any measure and she knows that, so she nervously avoids any live tv apparitions. Her artistic vision was a hit or a a miss (Tropico) but what I really disliked was the carelessness with which she treated everything after and including the UV video. I flipflopped because I cared about her and is harder and harder to to explain for myself why. There were a few determining moments that angered me regarding her public behavior which made me distance myself from her music but I kept coming back...: First, was that moronic statement that she wished she was dead. This was so wrong on so many levels, it was pure ungratefulness from an incredibly lucky person who became an artist who is performing before thousands of adoring fans even the next day after that infamous interview. The second, was when she made that statement about FMWUTP when she said she fckd of lot of men in the business to no avail. I'm not a militant feminist but this was beyond grating to imply that giving sexual favors to powerful men is an acceptable route for a woman to success. Of course this was all fantasy, almost all of her real boyfriends were struggling musicians without any power in the business. That just made it even more weird and inappropriate. That was the first moment when I suspected her that she has some mental problems. After these statements I was unable to listen to any of her songs for at least six months. Now I'm witnessing this incredibly stupid and ridiculous situation in which she presents herself as a witch who is participating in ritual of hexing the president of the US. It seems like a silly thing, a laughing matter, but this is just contrasting incredibly with her pretense to be perceived as a serious artist, a thoughtful person involved with philosophy and love for science. I dismissed her interest in philosophy and her Catholicism as shallow, because of her statements made in interviews which explained partly her propensity towards occultism. But still I would never imagined that she would present herself in this cartoonish manner as a "witch", not a figurative but a literal one making strange signs with her hand and presenting moronic schedules for even more moronic rituals. In my book this is called making a fool out of yourself. But why? What was the purpose behind her move? The only rational explanation is that she believes these things which is really sad because that puts me in the situation to question her intellect. How can I listen to her songs and not feeling ridiculous?! Well, for now I stopped listening to Love. I just can't. Lana has a varied fandom: there are the very young and teenagers but there are a more mature audience which would not put up with this easily. I think that she'll lose a lot of serious music lovers who gave her the benefit of the doubt in many questionable moments in her career. But for many people who tried to take her more seriously than a stylistic experiment this could be to much. But I always had the feeling that she doesn't care. I have to take a brake from her again...it's just tiresome and disappointing

Is great that she's moving towards a more socially aware theme in her album, that should be the emphasis of her promo not this insanely stupid "witch against Trump" meme that is now a fixture in the mainstream media. Nothing happened on feb. 24 so the schedule is about some occult rituals. I hoped that she'll release something and we can put the witch thing away. I really enjoyed Love but at least in my case I cannot take her seriously anymore. I hope she stays safe and she will have no harm professionally or in any other way from this. -

Well Steve Nicks is not Lana. I'm afraid that in Lana's case the whole thing will be interpreted in a negative manner as always happened. But we'll see -

Let's put aside the death treats, maybe that's overreacting I admit it, but the ridiculousness of being perceived as a witch is just career ending in my opinion -

You underestimate the hatred in other people. It's about perception no one will dwell in the details of the rituals. Don't worry about me, worry about Lana Yea she just managed to fuck up another release -

If this witch thing will stick with her, if she doubles down on it, she risks to not be taken seriously anymore in the business and she will effectively kill her career remember when a guy took pictures in her house and put them on FB? -

It's one thing to make a political statement against Trump policies and it's another thing alluding that she is participating in a ritual to harm him. I agree that it's ridiculous and creates bad karma. She doesn't need anymore stupid controversies (i wish i was dead etc.). I'm starting flipping again... -

So why is she doing that sign with her hands or why she chose those dates that have an occult significance? She's a loose catholic and lately I think that she got sucked in this occult BS -

It's not good business to get political as an artist especially when Lana was criticized by the progressive music journalists as regressive. It's true that she didn't made any statements but this is getting ridiculous and she needs to clarify the situation soon. This could be an unexpected publicity stunt which will make her some promo or it will backfire an ruin this era. It's one thing to play around with occultism but it's an entire different thing to present yourself as a witch in the public without becoming ridiculous -

What is this witchcraft BS? Only Lana...I wonder if this has anything to do with the content of the album (Love is magic but it isn't witchcraft) or is just some random Lana style of online promo -

I think that this was her planned release schedule of the singles from the album and the last date is the album release. There are two possibilities: she will release another single today which is insane or, which is more probable, she forgot to adjust the picture posted on twitter to the fact that she released the first single in advance. Anyway this is a clear hint that she will do a social network type of promo so forget big time promo and big sale numbers. I saw that many are attacking her team and label for not promoting enough, I think that they just had an agreement with Lana that she will not participate in big promotion and they will invest as little as possible in promoting her music. She is afraid of performing on tv and she doesn't want mega-exposure again. Everybody must get over it, big time pop Lana will never happen. So, we can go back to the music, even if I already overplayed Love, I can get it out of my head -

The fact that she has low numbers in the UK doesn't surprises me anymore, she neglected that market But realistically can we expect big numbers after UV and HM and the way she promoted her music? She has 10 mil. views for Love on youtube in 3 days which is great. Will she have 100 mil. in a month? No. First, Lana doesn't have a broad appeal, she never had it btw, and secondly she doesn't do any heavy promo (tv+radio). The song is good but rarely a song becomes a hit without heavy involvement from the artist. I don't see yet any particular promotional strategy in this era. The only realistic strategy in my opinion is to win back some of the people who bought BTD but even that is very difficult for many reasons I will not dwell on here. It doesn't help that her management seems more focused on that Dua singer. A more pop sound is not necessarily equivalent with commercial success (Carly) and trash. Depression is hard to pull of artistically and frankly can become boring and meaningless after some time. A more pop Lana is a more energized and optimistic Lana to me which has something else to say besides self-loathing. So forget the charts and enjoy the music and videos -

I'm happy for her success and I hope for more because the song is just great. But for big numbers in the US she needs radio (which maybe will happen this time) and late night tv promo which I doubt she'll do. Don't forget that BTD the album and even SS were sleeper hits so I don't expect huge numbers from Love. I think it will fare like Y&B which would be a huge accomplishment taken in account that she's not nearly as hyped as it was in 2013 and she doesn't have a movie to make the promo. But still, this song is just intoxicating... -
Which artists do you think/hope are featured on Lana's new album?
Flipflopfan replied to latothemoon's topic in Lana Thoughts
I'm not against collabs per se, but she has such a distinctive voice, esthetic and overall presence that she needs someone who can mesh well with her. I liked her collabs with The Weeknd. I trust her instincts and I'm really looking forward to these collabs (better to have collabs than covers anyway on the album) -

I don't know if this was posted but Love is getting the acclaim it deserves Pitchfork: Best new track http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/18791-lana-del-rey-love/ I don't care. Love is a great track, the video is great. Lana wasn't in the spotlight for a long time. People need time to discover her again. If the album is in the same vein (quality pop) and she'll stay positive I predict that she'll sell more than she did with UV -

The song is great, the video is great, she deserves all the streams but don't expect huge numbers tho, after UV and HM she lost a lot of casual fans who don't know that her new single and video is out. But with this new, more pop friendly direction, with the positivity that she radiates lately she can win them back in time. So far, with Love she achieved something rare in the business: she combined good quality with accessibility which was a hallmark of BTD -
Great video. So, she can do watchable and artsy videos in the same time
-
As I said, I think that she captioned something about the world today in the same vein as she did in VG but the lyrics are not as good (particular). I think that she's referring to how empty our social life is, in spite of the social media or the dating apps, and how everything is a meta discussion (signals crossings can get confusing) which influences us more than the persons who are physically close to us. But this meta-discussion is structurally repetitive and, in time, most of the people will realize the emptiness of it. In search for real love you have to go through a phase of solipsism (you get dressed and go out in a (social) place that has no relevance anymore in shaping your emotions) and love become another abstract idea (being young and in love) which translates more in a hope for a better future. I'm certain that neither Lana or her label intended to go with this album on the commercial route. I don't know if the song or the album will do well commercially because sometimes songs just catch fire but let's face it you need massive public presence (promo) to produce big numbers and I don't think Lana will change drastically her approach. If the rest of the album has the same pop catchiness as Love I think that she can somewhat better the HM numbers but not by much. What I like about this release is that she and her team were rational about it and acted quickly to diminish the damage of the leak. She needs to stay positive
-
The positivity around her is refreshing. She/her team made the right moves taken in account the circumstances. This is the spirit that I missed about her releases. Charts are secondary to the music and I have to admit that I hastily underappreciated Love which is a moving anthem. The lyrics are good and are relating strangely to what's happening in the world today. I wouldn't call it a VG level song but it's close. I'm tired of flip-flopping on Lana but she's one of the few pop artists that can bring a tear in my eyes

The problem is that apparently more songs leaked from the album. That would be tragic indeed
