Norman Fucking Rockwell - Pre-Release Thread
MJA replied to Elle's topic in Retired Pre-Release Threads
I think Sylvia Plath might be the October release. She said it was a stand alone song and "serious and thoughtful" Which frankly gives me hope that NFR will have some energy and bops (i.e. CINNAMON - which is so so good). -

Sigh... if you understood the implication it's based on people's reaction to things... not b/c they want a folk record... -

Agreed! "Why is this on there!? It's her folk album!".... If I hear this one more time.... -

THIS! who said this was a folk album? Who said they couldn't co-exist? Who said it's even on her album? I question if some of you have actual friends in real life. -

But you know you're basing this off of a 5 second snippet, right? That may or may not be on her album. Or any album. -

I am thinking rationally. She's a singer I like - and she maybe decides to do a song with a rapper. That's about it. Life moves on. She will be fine. You will be fine, trust me -

But what's the big deal if it were on the record? Does anyone remember Honeymoon? Uh, HBTB was the lead single and literally sounds like Lil Wayne's "Lollipop". And we saw the rest of the album was regarded as some of her best work. I really enjoy this forum, but the meltdowns are a bit much. And then we wonder why Lana turns off her comments? Some of ya'll need something else in your lives.... -
I'm sorry, but I like it. I always like her more hip hop collabs. I'm probably the minority - but whatever. I'm happy.

I'll never understand when so-called "lana fans" freak out over any hip hop influence or rap collabs. Uh, did you not hear Born to Die --- her biggest record to date. It has all hip hop beats and she literally raps (or as much as she can try) on a few songs. I actually prefer her more upbeat/hip-hop sounding records, but I still appreciate when she changes her sound (UV, HM, even MAC and VB). The same people complaining are the same people who made up in their head this was her "folk album" (and probably the same people who don't know what folk music is --- just that it sounds "cool"). Appreciate her music and that she spans a ton of genres - something many singers can't do and something that was called out that she does well in the Complex interview while promoting LFL. Oh, and in closing, we don't even know if it's her album or his or if it will even be released. SO CALM DOWN. -

Does he produce? Would we have produced one of the tracks on NFR? UV and HM were really coherent - LFL I'm not sure... but maybe she'll have one hip hop track on NFR? It's in conflict with her saying it had a Laurel Canyon/Red Hot Chili Peppers sound though.... -

How can people not be into Cinnamon? The first snippet it felt like another piano ballad, but now hearing the heavy beats and melody - I cannot wait. I think the people that don't like it are the same people that told themselves she was making a folk album and then disappointed that she didn't.... Between this, MAC, VB, and HIAB - I'm really liking how this album is shaping up. So curious what will be the lead song she will release from the album!! I'm not feeling How to Disappear, but will give it a chance once I hear the full song. -

I agree a lot of the songs sound the same, but Cinnamon does sound like it's about to drop. When I first heard VB I wasn't expecting it to pick up around the 2:00 mark. It's strange to me - with a title like Norman Fucking Rockwell, and her saying Jack put her in a lighter place, I'm surprised we wouldn't get some fun bops. I think hearing the album title, plus the don't fuck with me attitude we really saw with her Azalea Banks beef, that we wouldn't get more high energy, I-wont-not-fuck-u-the-fuck-up music and sound. But LDR is an enigma and I guess that's why we love her. -

I need her to come out with some new merch. A t-shirt that says "I won't not fuck you the fuck up. Period" -

Good point. Again, she also talked about the album having Red Hot Chili Pepper vibes, surf rock. Which this song doesn't. I'm not looking into it too much, but may be a one-off. It's cute, but let's be honest, we've all heard this song before from her. -

I don't understand why people keep saying it's a folk album? Didn't she say it was Red Hot Chili Pepper inspired? I imagine it might have a more alternative sound... Venice Bitch has that 90s alt vibe to it. -

I agree! I don't want like a Katy Perry track - but I'm hoping some more energy. Almost what Venice Bitch does when it picks up around the 2:00 min mark. I still think/hope the lead single will have a slightly more mainstream sound. -

Agreed. I realize she doesn't do the typical performances of many of her contemporaries, but it feels full circle for her to go back around January to hype the album. She also gets praise for being one of the few (if not only artists) to "bomb" on SNL and actually be successful. -

I don't buy it. But could be wrong. Let's see. Regardless I like the songs - no need for the attitude -

I've said this before but I still don't believe MAC or VB are lead singles. 1) I don't think she would release the lead single so early without the album complete 2) The music videos were just footage from Chuck 3) She has released songs from albums before the lead single (i.e. Honeymoon before HBTB) I like both songs and the direction of the album. I'm just saying I don't buy they are the lead yet (she usually does a bit of effort/promo for the lead). B/c the songs are getting critical praise and there is now more hype for the album, do we think we'd ever see her go back to SNL? Would be kind of cool around January - 8 years after her original performance. -

So, are MAC and Venice Bitch the lead singles? Or do we think we haven't gotten the lead single yet? I'm confused b/c she talks as if they are random songs, but then mentions she wanted to release Venice Bitch as a single. She did this with Honeymoon, where Honeymoon was released first as a teaser and then HBTB as the lead. Anyone have thoughts or intel on this? -

I have a strange feeling that Venice Bitch will be her new closing song for her next tour (replacing Off To The Races). It makes sense...the back end instrumental is upbeat and would be great as she says goodbye to fans and runs off stage. -

I didn't say the album was mainstream. Far from it. But her singles are usually more "mainstream". That's all I'm saying. I could totally be wrong. I'm just basing it from her history (West Coast, HBTB, Love). Also, I don't recall her saying "folk". She said it has surf elements and was Red Hot Chili Pepper inspired, but I don't recall her saying folk. -

So you think she's working with Jack, famous for Lorde, Taylor, etc., and she's going to have MAC as a lead single? Really? -

MJA replied to Elle's topic in Retired Pre-Release Threads
It's so clear to me that MAC and Venice Bitch are not lead singles from the upcoming album. She has said in the interview with Annie Mac they were random songs she released. I like both songs - but Lana still has the mainstream appeal and she is signed to Interscope. Even when Gaga tried to do the folk thing, they made the lead single Perfect Illusion. My point is: the lead single will likely be out the in the new year and likely be the most mainstream/pop-like (as pop as Lana gets) to get interest and awareness of the album. Every album she has released the lead single is always a bit more mainstream (West Coast, HBTB, Love).
