What kind of lies are you telling Jimmy?
He seems like the "prototype" LDR man because he IS the prototype

I think it's definitely an update on Young & Beautiful, as others have said. But really, I think it's about fading youth, transformation, girlhood vs womanhood, and pondering what her future holds when her fantasy, looks, naivety, and her men fail her. I think it's really LDR waving goodbye to the past iterations — Trailer Park Princess, Ms. 4th of July, Lolita, et al and evolving into her new life phase, The Lonesome Queen, a precocious girl turned grown-ass complicated woman now more at home in dark jazz clubs and empty mansions than gas stations and high school parking lots. It's very Frances Farmer / Blanche DuBois. (This comparison has been written about.)

I've always noticed this wide-eyed Jezebel-in-training/jaded, world-weary woman tension in LDR's music, and wondered how long she would hold onto the adolescent motifs given that she's nearing 30 and in many ways seems like an old soul. But that's just it: youth and beauty never really reflects on itself — someone yearning for it does (aka someone on the outside looking in, which LDR's music definitely is). Lana's music is almost never about living in the present, even with all those sensory/action words and use of the present voice — it's always about 'remember when,' 'what could have been,' and an imagined past. So, it makes sense that she, as a young but wise woman of 29, would already reminisce about the naive "power of youth" of her own recent/theoretical past. But I think with this album, and this song + The Other Woman tellingly following it, she's ready to let go of girlhood and embrace her dark and isolated matriarch throne.
Her doing the Malificent theme song actually (if coincidentally) speaks volumes. Lana longs to be the passive, eternally young, and lovely Sleeping Beauty but she will always, deep down, be the equally beautiful, but mortal, complex and tortured Malificent.

This is amazing. It is why I just WON'T understand (LOL...in some cases, though I guess I could) why so many critics refer to Lana as a fraud, a this, a that, all of these pejorative terms. She is a trendsetter. In my opinion, a true critic researches his or her subjects thoroughly, as to come to the most well-read conclusion. Anyone who has dug beneath the surface of Ms. Del Rey, all the way back to the Siren era and beyond, would know that my girl has been slaying for years and has only refined what she has ALWAYS done. She has been different from the get-go. I love when people JUST get on board and act as if things are brand new.

Don't worry, Barrie. Taylor Swift will be calling you asking you to star in a knock-off of a Lana video before you know it. And of course Lana will ask you to open for her while she's dating Jimmy Gnecco.

Got the same feeling. Guns and Roses is the weakest part of the album, especially the lyrics. When I heard "HE LOVES GUNS AND ROSES, GUNS AND ROSES HE LOVED GUNS AND ROSES, HE LOVED GUNS AND....ROSES, ROSES, ROSES" or "YOU GOT GAME BOY, GAME BOY, YOU GOT GAME BOY, GAME BOY, YOU GOT GAME BOY, GAME BOY"  I asked myself wtf is that? Lana, you can do better....thank God it's only additional track.

And here is something I don't like about UV: many of its chorus are based on the same scheme: just repeating the title (vide: Is this Happiness, Ultraviolence, Sad Girl, Guns and Roses, Money Power Glory). It's really annoying and cheap. I mean I like UV so much, but I have to admit that BTD got more sophisticated lyrics.

Even though there's a huge chance that the theories probably are wrong, I absolutely love this thread.
It was a very compelling read and it made me think about the person hiding behind the image of Lana Del Rey. I'm really fascinated by her Lizzy Grant years.
Kudos to all the people who have shared their knowledge, interpretation of lyrics and ideas. This thread is the reason I joined this board and decided to stay on it(I know, haven't written at all till now - gonna change that!).
    I love smart, insightful fans.

My personal belief, from listening to So Legit, is that Lana and Gaga used to be friends/acquaintances, as they were both struggling musicians in the New York (I might be wrong here) scene. Gaga changed her style and got famous, which pissed Lana off and turned her into a 'Hater'. The hatred, imho, stems from Lana's jealousy. I have a feeling Lana is over it now though, I don't think she hates Gaga anymore but neither are they best friends.

I REALLY want a new record but I think Lana fans don't have to be as desperate as other fan groups. Lana is famous for only 2 years now and we already have SO many songs, there's not only one or two albums we have to listen to over and over again

I get the love for vinyl or even the retro nostalgia for 8-tracks. But cassettes? The sound quality is terrible. These days they probably even cost more to produce than CDs. I grew up in the cassette era. It is not something anyone should want to return to. You might as well say you wish we'd go back to the Dark Ages.

Really? An artist with hundreds of songs out there is lazy?

If that ever happens, you'll see what ultraviolence really is. Let me fix that for you:

Moog synthesizers? That would be real horrorshow.

Ha, how insane would that be? Can you even imagine? I think the universe would fold in on itself and implode. Prepare for Lanalysis to go meta in 3...2...1...

I want to travel to see Lana at multiple times this summer cuz I can now and I want to. SO hopefully this includes the US and I'll just follow Lana around.

    I see it like this:

The Garden of Eden = Paradise = L.A. (the way she expected it to be)

Lana said that The Garden of Eden turned into the Garden of Evil, which is the Land of Gods and Monsters, which is L.A.
Remember the line in "Radio" where she sings: "Now I'm in LA and it's Paradise"
I think the Garden of Eden represents the way Lana imagined it Hollywood/LA to be with Marilyn, Elvis, etc. all being part of it.
She looses her innocent and childish view of it as soon as she's confronted with the truth, she basically took a bite of the truth. Her eyes were opened.
