Lana Del Rey seen leaving Starbucks 2/4/2014
neuf replied to TrailerParkDarling's topic in Sightings
Guy probably works for label, management, etc. Coffee to discuss business or whatever isn't exactly uncommon. Let's just hope for no jeeps added to her cars-in-song list. Creep in a jeep? -

[Poll] Renaming of Sirens/From The End/Quiet Now

The purist would dissemble and try to have it as close to as Lana intended back in the day/how they were released. They're also going to EPs if they are under a certain runtime. -
Blank ball caps are weird as fuck.

"Finished" is nebulous. The songs might be done but they still have to mixed, then mastered. Plus art, promotional photos, etc. Takes a couple of months. Also, I like TOSTB a lot too and it has that anger that might fall in line with something like Ultraviolence, but I doubt it'll be on there. It's a shame that especially that one won't see light of day because she really delivers a great performance. -

What's the source on Interscope hating Paradise? That would confirm my suspicions that it was supposed to LP2 but it got cut down to an EP. -

That's missing the point. The album was released in Jan 2012, did decent from Video Games and Blue Jeans, but probably didn't hit expectations especially after the SNL deal. It didn't do as well as they probably wanted until she got the US public turnaround through the remixes that are relatively recent. The fact that the album is now on top is important because she can build off that momentum. The US public opinion of her since has eased up on thinking she paid her way and lacks any singing ability, as many people thought before. But she's still not totally in the clear, I think, that's why I imagine Interscope will probably put some importance into this release. -

I don't think we'll hear anything old. "Yayo" was rerecorded because it seemed pretty important personally to Lana. It had several versions and survived throughout the years. The only unreleased songs that seem as important might be "Hundred Dollar Bill" and we might see some kind of version of "Every Man Gets His Wish"/"Hawaiian Tropic"/"Daytona Meth" since that idea has obviously been kicking around in her head a bit. Otherwise, I really doubt anything old popping up on this album, aside from the two recent ones -- BB and AFFA. Those days have kind of passed. -
Yeah, I agree with that. TIWMUG is one of my favorites. I'll agree now that I know it ends that way. It just always seemed weird to how finished YCBTB was not even released as a bonus track. The fact it was played live and had enough hype back then to be unreleased is weird to me. Especially in comparison with the other unreleased stuff, it seemed that the time it was bound for release in some capacity.
-
I don't get what you're saying (do you not think it's a good song?) I just realized the actual album ends with TIWMUG and not Lucky Ones (which I don't like), so that's news to me. If the album ends with TIWMUG, then it's a lot more solid than I gave it credit for. It always felt like after that song, the album kind of lingered directionlessly so now I get it. It just seems like YCBTB was primed and ready, it was the first song I ever heard from her and that was before BTD was released. I didn't like/was apathetic to Blue Jeans and Video Games, so I didn't get into the album until much later.
-
I really don't get why "You Can Be the Boss" was omitted. It seemed like it was cut at the last minute to balance out the album or something. I remember hearing it being promoted before the album and she did sing live before the release. A big mistake, I think, but maybe they felt it was too similar to "Diet Mt. Dew" or something. They could have made it an iTunes bonus track or something.

Would Lana be as well-liked if she wasn’t attractive?
neuf replied to Monicker's topic in Lana Thoughts
She's pretty but she's got her faults too. It's stupid to tear her apart physically, though. Everyone is different and looking for some kind of universal beauty is a lost cause. I think beauty is overblown in music and lately it's been moving a bit away from that. Weirdness is more embraced a bit more and it can still be sexualized. There used to be weird pop artists but they weren't really too sexual-/sensualized. Also the weight of makeup, surgeries, wigs, etc. (of all great quality and expensive) kind of obfusicates all of this. It's all smoke-and-mirrors after a certain level. Also, a lot of it's perception. Lana blantantly sings with confidence that she's hot. People like Adele don't do that or have any interest to it seems. Lana does or at least did. She's undoubtedly a pretty girl in candid shots. I think some of this comes into why people deride Barrie. Lana and Barrie make sense to me, but people don't see Barrie as hot as Lana or something. I think she's obviously attractive, but I don't know if I've ever felt that attracted to her outside of her music and persona created within it, to be honest. There's certainly other pop singers I'd go for before Lana if I had the chance on looks alone, but I wouldn't miss the opportunity given the occaison. Personally, the older I get the more I see the synthesis of personality and looks -- a very pretty girl can be instantly unattractive with a terrible personality. And as much as people deride it ("well, I'm sure she's got a great personality!" when someone isn't attractive), personality and confidence can infinitely make someone more attractive or unattractive. -

I don't believe much of Lana's talk really. Paradise is really an EP more than an album, it was meant to be an addedum to Born to Die. She might have had a whole album's worth of material by that time and had it shot down -- that's not that uncommon and often artists don't talk about it. I think it's insane not to expect a US tour. Touring and airplay are how she and Interscope gets paid, and she's under a contractual obligation and rising more to fame. I'm sure she's feeling some pressure whether or not she'll ever admit it. If there's any point in her career where Interscope's hands are in the cookie jar, it's now. Like I said before, if it's a success, they'll let her have more freedom later. But no matter how much manpower is given towards UV, there's never any guarentee it will be successful. -

Yeah, that's why I expect some collaborations. It's a classic big label move to prop up anything with another successful artist. I fully expect a large US tour at medium-sized venues (she's not going to be doing the Staples Center but Madison Square Garden is a possibility). I honestly wouldn't be surprised with some EDM-influenced tracks. I only have anecdotal evidence, but a lot of people seem to say "she's okay, her electronic stuff is cool" which basically means the remixes. It'd be interesting how Black Beauty plays into that, but honestly I like Black Beauty more than the EDM stuff. For non-fans but casual people who know who she is -- it falls into two camps: people who like "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans" ("Black Beauty" plays to this sensibility) and then "Summertime Sadness" and the remixes. The slow songs by nature just aren't good for radio, especially sad ones like Lana writes unfortunately. I don't expect something like "Black Beauty" or AFFA to be a single or anything, but they'll have a place on the album. I hate analyzing this merely as business because I'm sure there's some creative leeway Lana has. If anything, there will be more unreleased stuff at least whatever the label decides to do. But you're absolutely right, airplay is the name of the game and Interscope is going to try very hard to push it. -

Juliette Lewis was pretty famous at least. She's more than just an actress, she does music too. In the early-mid 90s (when Seinfeld still aired and Daft Punk did Gap commercials...), she was pretty well-known. Don't read too much into it, they probably just met by chance somewhere and briefly hung out. Lana might have a few songs on her phone or something and let Juliette listen. Madonna runs her own show enough that I think a lot of Interscope input will be put into UV. I think they were initially going to write her off or keep her as a foreign market act but with Summertime Sadness and Young and Beautiful, they've got good momentum building. I'd expect a single in April to keep her in the public consciousness. Lana is a big gamble for them, but definitely less so after BTD. They kind of paid the price of the backlash but now I think enough people are okay with her as casual listeners of Top 40 music. It's the summer of Lana baby. -

If the album, a first single, or a teaser song isn't out by the time in Coachella -- I'd expect 2-3 new songs. Maybe only 2 if nothing out before. This is common because bands have to learn songs and whoever plays with her at Coachella will probably be her touring band for the dates afterward. So it's a good "rehearsal" for new material too. I'm sure they'll have good polished versions especially for Coachella, but it's important to think of the logistics in terms of practicality. Don't expect an album full of "Black Beauty"s people. There's going to be uptempo and downtempo ones, it'll be balanced and scrutinized by producers, Lana, and the record company. As much as I don't want any collaborations on the album, there'll probably be 1 or 2. A collaboration will help a single be strong if they don't feel it can walk on it's own legs as strongly as they want. It's in Interscope's best interest to make this album very strong so she keeps up the momentum in the US. Important timing right now. You have to remember how much she's at the mercy of Interscope. I'd say if this is successful (and there are people working hard on making sure it will be), she'll have a lot more freedom on the one after this. -

Also, a title like "Paradise Lost" seems like it closes out Paradise nicely and sets a tone. The old is gone and this is dark and violent. It's also kind of "beginner's pretentious" literature which, no offense, Lana would be into. Like Howl or I Sing the Body Electric from Leaves of Grass. She pulls from pretty accessible literary classics that people read in high school is what I mean be "beginner's prentention", I guess. Bad choice of words but there you go. -

I don't know why any of you don't think she'll still sing about similar motifs. I'm sure there will be new ideas but she's not going to throw out religious imagery, postwar era nostalgia, money and wealth, etc. -- those are just too broad and part of Lana's niche in the whole pop scene. I think some of you hold onto "an end to the BTD era" a little too tightly, almost as if she'll become a completely different artist or something. She's been running those themes since AKA and I don't think they're competely going away. New ideas and themes...yes, but don't put your panties in a twist if she mentions Coney Island or a "Daddy" with a drug problem that lives wrecklessly. You know what I mean. There will be growth in her lyrics and the sound will be cohesive to the album, that's all I expect. -
I think it's funny that anyone wouldn't think she'd tour the US.
-
Obligatory "lineup isn't that great", but I'm sure she'll play some new material which is good. Also isn't there a rule that you can't play any West Coast shows a month before Coachella if you sign to book it? I know there at least used to be some kind of stipulation a few years ago.

I really love Black Beauty. It reminds me of Leonard Cohen and I think Lana would take that highly. My only concern is BB and AFFA sound pretty similar; both have that chanteuse style with very similar structures. Given Barrie's love of Serge Gainsboug, I can see Lana and him modeling themselves after Gainsbourg and Birkin a bit. Ultraviolence evokes clubby and upbeat with sinister overtones to me, but I don't think we'll get that. I'm sure there'll be upbeat tracks but it's interesting -- I like the title as it works on a lot of levels. You could even shorten it to LDR|UV or something. I have a feeling the art direction is going to be a letdown but the songs will be good. -

It's too early to tell about any of this. I think the only title we actually have is "Living Legend", outside of what we've heard ("Black Beauty" and AFFA). And with the way Lana's catalog is, who knows if it'll even make the cut for the album. -
Tropico named 2nd biggest flop of 2013 by VH1
neuf replied to Foolish's topic in Awards & Nominations
Tropico suffered due to delays and when there's delays, people assume it's to build hype. Especially at the major label level. Seems like it just got over-hyped, but Lana had to keep mentioning it to remind us that it was coming. Seemed out of her control and she suffered for it. Tropico would have been great as a giant teaser to Paradise. I don't expect a video for everything off UV, but I think it'd be really cool to have a short film featuring a few songs off of it. It would build excitement and also satisfy any artistic indulgence. Also the visual element to any music I think always sways people positively that would be on the fence about a song. But that won't happen, too little time I think. -

I'm surprised it's taken that seriously. I don't think many people outside of Lana's fans cared about this. Then again, I'm sure some lowly staff writer had to come up with a list because that's her job. The media machine churns and nothing really gets accomplished.
