  1. iTunes described the song as being "doleful," so I wouldn't expect something light.
  2. I hope Lana sticks with Dan's gorgeous, thoughtful production. She's too good for the overproduced, disingenuous-feeling work that's so popular right now. He won the Grammy for Producer of the Year for a reason. I'm a little worried about Kurstin being on the album, but he has done a good job with Foster the People, Lykke Li, Santigold, and Marina before. I also like the songs he did for Lily Allen and Beyonce.
  3. The iTunes preview notes that Lana reflects on "the corruption of money and power." This has always been a theme that interested her, but I hope it is more explicit in this song than, say, NA. Many people, like a certain emo kiwi, misinterpreted those lyrics to mean that she was bragging about a hedonistic lifestyle.
  4. Her lyrics are as gorgeous as they used to be, but she is implementing subtlety into this era, which I think makes them better.
  5. I love that one of the only words that you can make out is "blue." These look gorgeous, though. Straight out of "Hotel California."
  6. Making sure that every song about him isn't about his depression.
  7. So, Lana is 2/2 for universal acclaim with critics so far this era. She's coming for that high MetaCritic score and all of the Rock Grammys.
  8. He used to call me DN It stood for deadly nightshade Cause I was filled with poison But blessed with beauty and rage Jim told me that he hit me and it felt like a kiss Jim brought me back Reminded me of when we were kids [Chorus] This is ultraviolence Ultraviolence Ultraviolence Ultraviolence I can hear sirens, sirens He hit me and it felt like a kiss I can hear violins, violins Give me all of that ultraviolence [Verse 2] He used to call me poison Cause I was poison ivy I could have died right there Cause Jim was right beside me Jim raised me up He hurt me but it felt like true love Jim taught me that Loving him was ever enough [Chorus] We can go back to New York Cause loving him was really hard We can go back to the start Where they don't know who we are Heaven is on earth I would do anything for you, babe Guess it is meant to be Crying tears of gold, like (?) [spoken] I love you the first time I love you the last time Yo soy la princesa, comprende these late nights (?) Cause I'm your jazz singer And you're my cult leader I love you forever I really love you forever [Chorus]
  9. I think Lana garnered some inspiration from this track: "and i feel your fists and i know it's out of love and i feel the whip and i know it's out of love and i feel your burning eyes burning holes straight through my heart it's out of love give me a little bit o' serious love be full of love your fistfuls of love" She loves Antony and the Johnsons.
  10. I really love the allusions to her alcoholism ("filled with poison"). Only line that troubles me is "give me some of that ultraviolence." The rest makes sense because she is telling a story about being blinded by love in a volatile relationship, but I don't know how I feel about that line being in the present tense with Lana asking for that same kind of ultraviolence. Edit: I realize that she's saying that she wants that same passion back, but I feel like that one line could have been phrased differently.
  11. That part about going back to New York and no one knowing who they are again. Jesus...the feels.
  12. I always saw Nina Simone singing from TOW's perspective, though.
  13. All of the songs about Barrie revolve around him being depressed.
  14. She talked about how they "gazed" at each other before introducing themselves in the new Intro interview, haha.
  15. I love that she openly admits that she and Dan eye fucked locked eyes in the club before introducing themselves and becoming lovers fast friends.
  16. Sounds so gorgeous, but I already know we're going to have to hear so much BS from people not getting the story-telling element of the lyrics and claiming that Lana is promoting domestic abuse.
  17. Why does only the Deluxe, explicit version say "Mastered for iTunes?"
