A selfish person would not be so kind to her fans... Immature? May be.
    Her imperfections make her beautiful.

This thread is such a shitty pile of speculation and schadenfreude Like any of us has any idea what their relationship is actually like.

I feel as if Lana is a young woman who is still learning who she is, not only as an artist but as a person separate of that entity. I think that is why she contradicts herself sometimes. I think she has an idea of who she is, but there is still this sense of confusion and this need to come into her truth, as it relates to her self, more. She is at that age where there is still work to be done to truly claim one's identity.

Not that I think anyone's being particularly serious with the bipolar comments, but as someone with bipolar, that's not what bipolar disorder is like. It's not changing your mind or having different personalities like a lot of people seem to confuse it with these days.

She's fairly reliable in her inconsistencies. They mostly differ on God and happiness, two themes that go way back in her songwriting. "Me and god we don't get along". Let's not forget a lot of her interviews are translated and she also always gets misquoted. We all know she has a lot of quite extreme phases, Jewel-eske to pop Lolita to grunge fuzz to jazz... Her influences and relationships probably just change a lot too. That includes god I suspect.

I think Lana is spiritually sensitive. She is probably a medium. I am an universalist spiritist and sorta get some pretty highly spiritual vibes from her like she is constantly channeling stuff.

Guess she was right when she sang Her mind's like a diamond, her thoughts vary between interviews so fast it's both enigmatic and frustrating, as someone said above me. But not only her mindset is as glimmering as a diamond, it's also like a rough one to me: she has so many things to say but cannot find the proper way to express them so she ends up being both dramatic and controversial...

Yes and with her philosophical curiosity and studies her view of God is probably more complex and open than an average Joe's. In this particular interview she leans toward an impersonal concept of God, the Greatness that stands behind everything. But she also mentioned in the past that she values tradition and considers herself Catholic. She is trying to reconcile a lot of things, which may sound contradictory.

When you're building an enigma, I suppose mixing your messages and giving conflicting viewpoints within the space of a week is fine. But, humorously, I was just in a brand identity meeting for work and I ended up thinking about how disastrous Lana would be at managing any brand other than her own. When businesses contradict themselves in a message or presentation, people jump ship. Only an artist can get away with it, and as we know, even most pop singers nowadays are afraid to go "off-brand." Everything is curated and planned to a painful extent; this is why media training is now standard for stars-to-be. For Lana, everything in her world is art directed, but in interview form, when she's not in full control, it all goes scattershot. Her mind really is made of mercury, and it's both fascinating and frustrating.

i'm telling you this bitch feels nothing but undercurrents of abstract emotion every now and then, and everything else is ruled by her head

i think there has to be some kind of inverse relationship with emotionality and incisive eloquence in communication. she's so good at articulating herself, but most of that is an intellectual process. i think she's confusing because there's such a vast disconnect between what she feels and what she thinks, whereas with most people, the two processes are more intertwined (rather than paradoxical)

a lot of elements probably factor into the outcome of the interview too. how her day is going, the vibe of the interviewer, whether she feels more emotional or more numb, etc on that particular day. maybe her connection with god is more spiritual (abstract) but detached (mentally); and on this particular day she decided to share her more rational perspective on the matter? who knows with her bipolar ass

With each interview that she gives the less I seem to understand where she's coming from or what message she wants to convey. She's the most mercurial artist I've come across in a long time, which is not necessarily a bad thing (the complexity of her emotions and views), just highly disorienting. Every time I think I pin down a part of her personality or belief system she switches it up so fast I'm left spinning. I think the one thing I know for sure about Lana is that she defies a concrete definition and does not submit to pedestrian conventions.
    My sentiments exactly !

"I’m obsessed with 'Video Games' by Lana Del Rey," Manson told us. "Absolutely obsessed by that song. Her whole story is fascinating on so many levels. To me, the music really stands up on its [own]. Whether people believe in her or not I don’t care. The music is so strong."

"I first discovered 'Video Games' by total default," she continued. "I was just mooching around on the internet. I sat on my bed on a Friday night and played it over and over again crying to the point where my husband was like, 'honey, you need to shut the computer now.'"

Because she is willing to say those things out loud and expose herself and be vulnerable. That's one of the things I love about her.

I LOVE Liz Phair!!!! I discovered her when White Hot Chocolate Space Egg came out. Awesome album and then went on to discover the brilliance of Exile in Guyville. I love love love her. In a lot of ways, I see a lot of similarities between Lana and Liz (and not just a shared first name).

At the peak of the Lana hate, she turned down a sound bite with Rolling Stone to post a full page opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal on the subject of Ms. Del Rey.

i'm not sure i'd describe her as depressed. like obv she's pretty #sadcore but also i just get the sense that she gets into these really existential moods and questions the value of life and what it means to die.

Agreed. Its very easy to read too much into words, unless she's sitting in front of you talking, everything from tone to facial expressions to the way she speaks can change everything. Her words certainly hold weight in this interview for sure.....but its easy to read into things without really understanding what someone can truly mean. She does tend to get a little dramatic at times when she talks about certain things, i've often found its her having a comfort in certain topics and not being afraid of them, so she just gives very straight forward and blunt responses that may come across as bit odd to other people.

She seems very open emotionally, very connected to what she feels and how things affect her, she talks about it sometimes without a lot of tact, she can put her foot in her mouth if she starts trailing off into another one of her over thought out answers where she starts getting philosophical about the world and her experience of it.

She may very well be depressed, but she may also just be a generally up front person about every miniscule detail of her thought process, she does seem like a very self indulgent person, you can see it in her music and Barrie sounds the fucking same, no wonder shes into him.

I'm so tired off this "I saw an article or a picture of Lana on the web and I know her better than anyone else". You know shit about her. We all saw those pictures and it could be that is from one or two conferences only. She never said that she didn't met her father in that period but it could be that were lengthy periods when they didn't communicated because her parents didn't approved her lifestyle and she just ran away.

You are an optimist. Until now it's pretty mixed: two lows from self-proclaimed haters and some good and very good reviews. But I fear what will come, I think she didn't changed her approach towards these critics she will be affected again by it.

I think she's clearly clinically depressed, and she's suicidal. People always talk about death before they try it and I think that the Ultraviolence reception could be the tip over. She's unbalanced emotionally, her family it's weird, Barrie it's depressive too so her close relationships doesn't really help her out, she's alone confronting irrational hatred...my god for a moment I felt it and it's horrible (waiting to be judged by haters while you are putting your soul out there)

It's easier to be said than done. She 's bound by contracts, she has tons of fans (she cares about), she loves making music. But the haters are just spoiling her dream. I never understood why is that, it is so easy to avoid her: She's not on radio or on TV, it's not that she's shoved in your face. You have to search for her to listen to her. The whole promotion was restrained, her pictures were so minimalist, she's so pretty and fragile. But NO, there is just unabashed hatred coming towards her. I would recommend to establish a new psychological disorder called "Lana hatred syndrome" because this is truly a mental condition for some

I am staying away from new Ultraviolence interviews. My nerves can't take it... all of this is really affecting me lately. I never looked up to and loved an artiste or person as Lana/Lizzy... even though I never met her I feel connected. I feel for her. I'll just wait for the record arrive thru mail and listen to it forever. Love you Lana, don't give up, you are special, you have the right to shine!

She is clearly a smart girl and very self aware. And she has a point of view that is outside the mainstream of us mere mortals that can make her seem crazy, insane, or out of touch.

I do agree she says things in interviews that are indicative of her playing the media; like shooting fish in a barrel, it just so easy. Her comments on feminism in the Fader article are an example of that. She was very careful and precise in what she said and what she didn't say. The derivative news media just went insane.

However, I also believe that she just blurts things out without much thought that most people would filter first, and that reveal her vulnerabilities. ("Lana, how to you mentally prepare for a concert?" "I freak the fuck out.")

So, I think her public statements are a combination of both well thought out cynicism and emotionally vulnerable honesty.
