  1. I think that—for my own sanity—I won’t expect anything too different sonically because I hate setting my expectations too high For now, I’m telling myself we’re getting familiar production but maybe something more lively…maybe in the vein of FIILY’s chorus. Anything different or more intense sonically will be a pleasant surprise
  2. That would definitely make sense omg!! I also wonder if “rock candy” could be a lyrical motif throughout the record if she’s recycling that line… in before “rock candy” is the “candle in the wind” of LDR9
  3. I’m sure someone’s said this already, but if there’s a good amount of Jack’s work on LDR9, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a heavier extension of the surf elements we heard on NFR Imagine a trip hop, surfy record. Sublime meets Beach Boys…we aren’t ready
  4. Boz (at least from what I’ve seen) can be really critical of Lana’s discography, so I feel a confident, all-caps “GOOD” is saying something Lana has come to overthrow NFR’s throne, methinks…I just know LDR9 will be a fan favorite. I can feel it
  5. oh…my god??? Sorry I’m late, but we have to be getting it fairly soon if the lyrics are being teased! Sheridan Ward’s “if you know, you know” has me wondering if he knew something was coming soon…
  6. I’m lowkey so conflicted on some of these Realizing so many of the people on here are great
  7. If she goes the country route, can we get a harmonica? I feel like it would slap idk
  8. The way Jack worded his recent interview makes it seem like COCC was the softer, quieter deviation of the work that gave rise to NFR. Conversely, there’s clearly a subset of tracks that seem to be the more lively, intense extensions of their time in the studio that remains unheard. I can’t help but wonder what the “bombastic” songs were like! I mean, the softer parts of NFR (MAC, HIADT, etc.) transition into COCC nicely, but what about NFR’s more lively moments? Perhaps we could expect these unreleased songs to be a deeper exploration of the soundscapes in tracks like Doin’ Time and Venice Bitch. Lana’s alleged request for a Kali Uchis collab and her time spent with Mike Dean have me (wishfully?) thinking…
  9. Hey Blue Baby (Sylvia Bombastic Mike Dean Remix) feat. Fordham Catholic High School Choir
  10. POV: Lana surprise releases her Western trap spoken word record Rock Candy Sweet, opening it with “Sylvia…”
  11. Bombastic typically has a negative connotation, but I don’t think Jack meant it that way. He uses the subtleness/quietness of Chemtrails to contrast these “other” songs just before this, so I think he just meant they’re more lively and unrestrained!
  12. I still see so many TikTok videos using Dealer go viral! It’s definitely still getting a lot of exposure, I think!
  13. I’m not really sure what my hopes are for this record. I’d love to see something different—I mean, I’m not expecting a full 180 (like the transition from BTD to Ultraviolence), but I would think it’s cool to see something like the segue of Honeymoon to LFL. I think she’s in a place stylistically that really suits her: more singer-songwriter and toned down, but there’s certainly a ton of variety within that subset of music! Other than that, I think I’d be cool with whatever! (Actually I think I’d enjoy a Mike Dean feature, too…just to see.)

    Lorde

I know this is subjective, but.. I don’t really hear too many similarities between NFR! and Solar Power, personally. I don’t have a music theory background, but the harmonies on Solar Power are very distinct from those on Lana’s record; it often appears that SP’s harmonies are just as prominent as the lead vocal. The use of guitar on SP is often fairly saturated with what sounds like a phaser effect common in psychedelic music (see The Path), whereas Lana’s is a bit more organic with the exception of Venice Bitch. NFR! is also largely dominated with front-and-center mellotrons and piano. The use of drums is also very different in the use of their drumming patterns and the fact that Lorde and Jack used an 808 throughout. The melodies also seem pretty distinguishable: Lorde’s are a bit more meandering and atonal(?), whereas Lana’s follow more chord progressions that generally stay within the same key throughout. While both have many modern lyrical markers, Lana’s songwriting is significantly more accessible, memory-grounded, and and conversational with a few exceptions. Lorde’s are often a bit indirect in conveying the song’s thesis, and you can see this implemented pretty well in tracks like Fallen Fruit; this isn’t inherently a bad thing at all, but yeah. I’m a massive Lorde fan, and while I didn’t care for Solar Power, I do have a hard time relating the two outside of the presence of current social commentary and a bit of 70s influence. That’s just me, though!
  15. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this! I thought about asking if I would even be able to do this look with my face/eyelid structure, but I felt a bit embarrassed because I seriously know nothing about makeup lol. This is a photo of my eyes/eyelid when I’m not smiling. Do you have any specific advice/tips based off of this? I’m mostly trying to get that dark look under my eyes. Thank you so much in advance! I seriously wasn’t expecting that detailed of an answer but really appreciate it!
  16. your list is like..the epitome of dreamy introspection
  17. Sirens: Bad Disease AKA: Pawn Shop Blues BTD: Born To Die Paradise: Ride UV: Is This Happiness HM: Swan Song/TLY (so hard to choose) LFL: Get Free TLSP collab. album: California NFR: hope is a dangerous thing…but I have it COCC: White Dress BB: Wildflower Wildfire Demo: Beautiful People Demo/LFL Demo Unreleased: I Talk To Jesus Cover: Chelsea Hotel No. 2
  18. Agreed! If he really is the main producer, I’m so interested to see what the record will sound like! I doubt she’d reach out to Mike Dean for a record with sparse production absent of synths—he’s literally called the “synth goat.” Don’t get me wrong: I’m sure we’ll see some WFWF-esque tracks, but I’m anticipating something very different than BB and COCC if she follows through with him. I’d love to hear Lana’s take on the first minute of this track. It gets a bit too techno(?) for my tastes after 1:30, but I find the first bit really cool! I’d love trippy stream of consciousness & synth siren vibes for LDR9
  19. I wish we knew the idea that her management said she’s wanted to do for years.. If it’s a surprise drop, there’s really no telling how far she’s gotten, especially with her wishes for privacy in her work! If I remember correctly, Lana mentioned COVID restrictions affecting COCC, so I figure she’s probably more inclined to be in the studio with restrictions being lifted or lessened in many places. I almost find it hard to believe she’d only work with Mike Dean once (especially with his “future work” comment), but I dunno. I feel that it’s more than possible they could’ve worked on LDR9 without us knowing. Hm..
  20. this could mean nothing, but Mike Dean liked this tweet..
  21. Manifesting White Dress x Dealer x Money Power Glory x WFWF energy. Feral but also poetic
