it's One of the album's best songs, Kintsugi is extremely depressing.

you just need to give it few listens for the melody to grow on you and you understand the meaning  behind it

Putting Kintsugi and Fingertips next to each other on the tracklist sounds like a very risky move. I'm here for it, though!

By the way I'm seeing an interesting pattern here:

The Grants - Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd - Sweet: the orchestral/warm (and introductory) section

A&W - Judah Smith Interlude: the dark section

Candy Necklace - Jon Batiste Interlude: ?

Kintsugi - Fingertips: the dense/wordy section

Paris, Texas - Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep-sea fishing: the emotionally liberating section

Let The Light In - Margaret: the loose/relaxed section

Fishtail - Peppers - Taco Truck x VB: the fun/bop section of the album

That's true. If I recall correctly, @fl0r1dakil0s rated it pretty low as well, so it seems like a love it or hate it sort of track. (Kinda like Fingertips, I guess. :blush3:)

A couple of days ago he said that the song has grown on him a lot, ranked it #7 and that the melody is absolutely gorgeous (and basically that it's the more melodic sister of Fingertips). But, yeah, both this and Fingertips will be very divisive! Margaret, the interludes and poor Sweet as well. At this point, The Grants, too. I'm here for the messy rankings when the album is released. :sass:

People are entitled not to like this song or this sound for Lana.

I personally find the song to be beautiful as it is, love the production, love the use of the different instruments, the sound effects and the intro. :oprah3:

But acting like it's her best opener? It's giving recency bias. Ask again in three to six months and you'll have a different feedback in the post-release and "Unpopular Lana opinions" threads. :ma:

Or fans who are ranking it very low on those « best opening track » lists now will reconsider when they listen to the album in its entirety and let it marinate for a while. :ma:

  4. Spoiler

I'm so confused about poor Kintsugi. The lyrics that Kintsugi teased are some of her greatest ever. BOZ and 111 called it a "snooze"/"boring" despite the lyrical content, yet Kintsugi and Brightsun picked it as their favourite track, and both floridakilos and Rosemead praised it too. The Kintsugi-Fingertips section will be very divisive (Fingertips already is on these boards, but it's funny how that track is supposedly far less melodic than Kintsugi, yet BOZ and 111 prefer it, lol! There truly will be something for everyone on this album; the rankings will be all over the place and I'm here for it!).

Anyway, I haven't listened to The Grants yet, but I assume that the (extended) intro will put several casual listeners off, right? It sounds like an unconventional single choice, but releasing a "bop" as a single wouldn't make sense thematically. I think that they will push/promote another - more accessible - track on release day like they did with If You Lie Down With Me for Blue Banisters.

is the reason everyone is excited about candy necklace just because we haven't heard it yet? because based on what we actually have heard (the instagram snippet), it's just a piano ballad. which im cool with - but usually the piano ballads aren't the projected favourites. but maybe more has been said about it that im not aware of?

I actually think that the tiny snippet is otherworldly and eerie; it definitely doesn't sound like a "typical"/"predictable" Lana piano ballad to me. Besides, Kintsugi called it "massive" and the production credits are very promising: the song features acoustic and electric (!!!) guitars, violins, cellos, contrabass and celesta (!). Furthermore, the song is sandwiched between two very unusual and creepy/unsettling interludes - it seems that the record moves from a grand/orchestral sound (first three tracks) to a more creepy/dark one (A&W - Kintsugi), and I doubt that Candy Necklace would be the outlier here (I certainly didn't expect the Jon Batiste interlude to be described as wild and disturbing, lol!). I hope it delivers!

For me kintsugi is the new arcadia

    :xcry:

    Spoiler

I hope Kintsugi doesn't resemble Arcadia vocally or sonically. :blush3:

Eagerly waiting for your track ranking, btw! If I remember correctly, your top 4 songs were Kintsugi, Let The Light In, Margaret, and Taco Truck. Are these still in your top 4? And what about the rest of the tracks? :crying:

Interesting! If so, I definitely see her dropping 5-6 songs that didn't make the cut

It's possible, yeah! I'm just trying to decipher what could possibly make BOZ personally happy about this surprise. Music videos or a tour announcement don't make sense. A recorded live performance would include Ocean Blvd tracks, so that's a no. Unreleased/old stuff? No. A documentary perhaps? Although I'm pretty sure that all of BOZ's info is strictly music-related, right? And he did put that headphones emoji on his latest post on ATRL, lol. :eartha2:

  8. 3 minutes ago, Fingertips said:

This is what I initially thought for a while, but the only part I'm skeptical of is that BoZ said it doesn't have to do with Ocean Blvd tracks.

I interpreted this differently. I thought he meant that the surprise doesn't have anything to do with the existing/known Ocean Blvd tracks (a MV or a live performance of a single or something like that). But, yeah, this is very confusing.

  9. BOZ said that the surprise is not related to a "new music project". And Kintsugi told us that he doesn't want to reveal much, but the surprise is tied with "new music" and it is worth the wait. What could be new music but shouldn't be considered as a new music project? Definitely not unofficially released/leaked/unreleased stuff. And most definitely not a brand new album.

I think that @American Whore may be right. We might get the bonus tracks/deluxe edition/b-sides of DYKTTATUOB. It's not a "new music project" and it could explain: a) BOZ being personally happy about it (didn't he tell us that she changed the tracklist several times? He might have dug tracks that didn't make the cut; Candy Necklace was a last-minute addition after all), b) the "pearl watch me on ring a bell psycho lifeguard" part of the original album title - apparently titles of 4-5 songs that seem to have not been featured on the lyrics of any tracks so far (paging @fl0r1dakil0s for help!).

just listened to the jon batiste interlude and i’m kinda obsessed with it but didn’t realize how eerie it sounded until now. cant wait to stream without the ugly “rosemead exclusive baby” in the background

    Spoiler

Which is why I think that Candy Necklace will be a

    Spoiler

    massive

serve. The album's tracklist seems to have been carefully curated. Lana most definitely hasn't put a sweet/nostalgic/merely cute song between two very unsettling/creepy/off-putting interludes. :true:

  11. Summertime Sadness, Coachella - Woodstock In My Mind

    Spoiler

    (LOL)

, and The greatest are the only tracks from the second half of their respective albums that have been released as singles. And she didn't even intend to release The greatest if I remember correctly, lmao!

I haven't listened to The Grants yetbut I knew that she wouldn't want to release any of the alleged bops (tracks 14-16). These tracks will find their audience anyway as long as they're as good as insiders have implied. Not to mention that casual listeners will be gagged and taken by surprise by the gradual sonic change (orchestral -> experimental/dark -> laid-back/loose -> fun/sexy) of the album. Thematically, The Grants makes a lot of sense as a single/final introductory track to the album's themes/thesis (and her label wouldn't let her release Kintsugi or Fingertips no matter how much she loves these very dense tracks).

I have to admit that I expected Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep-sea fishing to be the final pre-release single. But the long-ass title and the unanimous raves by all of you who have already listened to it means that it has the potential to be generally successful when the album is released. I'm pretty sure that many people will be talking about it (the title alone is eye-catching to say the least, lol).

  12. I'll be gagged if the Jon Batiste interlude turns out to be better than Candy Necklace, lol! :silly:

But, yeah, floridakilos literally told us that most of the insiders/leakers haven't received the track along with the rest of the album, so their silence makes sense. Anyway, a Zach Dawes track with bass, celesta, strings, and electric guitar has to be good. :true::oprah3:

lana definitely opens her mouth.. and yes the production is sparse but I think it compliments the song - it wouldn't sound right with a big cinematic "lana" production

Thank you for the response! Yes, a very personal song about death and grief wouldn't feel right with a rich production. This is one of my most anticipated tracks!

lana's "funnest" song in a while, carefree and fun, you can feel that lana had fun recording it in the song, second half of the song is interesting production-wise, if someone played me the instrumental to the second half of the song two years ago i'd never believe it was a lana instrumental

I take off all my clothes, dance naked for the neighbors

I’m like “fuck it”, gonna give a show, I open up the blinds

don't open the second spoiler if you don't want lyrics spoiled

Peppers sounds so much fun! Is the second half experimental? I remember BOZ saying that he wanted to listen to the track a few more times before commenting on it.

Could I ask you a question about Kintsugi? I understand that it's one of the wordiest - second to Fingertips perhaps - tracks on the album. Is the production as sparse as BOZ implied? @Kintsugi kinda made fun of him when the production credits were revealed (guitar + synths + drums along with the piano). And does Lana barely open her mouth, lol? Because Kintsugi told us that the melodies are extraordinary, and that Lana sings her heart out. The tea about this track is so confusing. I'm intrigued by the fact that it's Kintsugi (duh) and Brightsun's favourite track.

can someone post those rankings pls?

    ROSEMEAD

    1. A&W

    2. Let The Light In

    3. The Grants

    4. Taco Truck x VB

    5. Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep-sea fishing

    6. Fishtail

    7. Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd

    8. Kintsugi

    9. Candy Necklace

    10. Sweet

    11. Margaret

    12. Peppers

    13. Paris, Texas

    14. Fingertips

    (15. & 16. Judah Smith and Jon Batiste Interludes)

Not a fan of the interludes, Fingertips, Paris, Texas, Peppers, and Margaret, but praised the rest of the tracks and literally said that Kintsugi and Candy Necklace being in the middle of his ranking order doesn't mean anything at all, because he adores both songs and we have nothing to worry about in terms of their quality. He also really likes Sweet which he called "cute next to gorgeous".

    FLORIDAKILOS

    1. Fishtail

    2. Taco Truck x VB

    3. A&W

    4. Fingertips

    5. Paris, Texas

Not a fan of the interludes and Margaret (because of Jack's voice, lmao).

    BRIGHTSUN

    1. Kintsugi

    2. Let The Light In

    3. Margaret

    4. Taco Truck x VB

They consider this to be Lana's best album. Not a fan of Paris, Texas!

    KINTSUGI (no official ranking)

    1. Kintsugi (duh)

+ highlighted A&W, called Candy Necklace massive, thought Margaret is actually great, called Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep-sea fishing excellent, praised Let The Light In and Taco Truck x VB's outro ("one for the books"), and generally raved about the tracks 8-16 sequence. The only tracks that he didn't like are the two interludes.

BOZ (no official ranking; an ATRL member tried to guess/predict BOZ's ranking order, and BOZ said that it's pretty close)

    1. Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep-sea fishing

    2. A&W

Also praised The Grants, Let The Light In, Paris, Texas, and Fingertips. He really likes the Jon Batiste Interlude and has kinda warmed up to the Judah Smith Interlude (which he called eerie and psychotic). He also said that Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd is possibly a top 5 track on his ranking order. Not a fan of Margaret (he called the song "cute", but he doesn't like Jack's voice at all in general) and Kintsugi (he praised the lyrics, but found the track way too slow for his liking).

The rankings are all over the map, and this is the sign of a great album! I love the fact that Margaret is at the bottom of BOZ's ranking (and Rosemead doesn't like it either), while Kintsugi said that it's great and it's also made Brightsun's top 3. Ditto Paris, Texas (very high on BOZ and Floridakilos' ranking, very low on Rosemead and Brightsun's ranking) and even Kintsugi (#1 (!!!!) song for both Kintsugi and Brightsun, near the bottom of the ranking order for BOZ) and Fingertips (Rosemead's least liked song, while praised by BOZ and floridakilos). It really looks like there's something for everyone. The only tracks that haven't appeared on top 5s etc. seem to be Peppers, Sweet and the two interludes. I haven't listened to any of the leaks/snippets, but I adore all of your wildly diverse reactions to the tracks so far. I am so excited about the new album! :lange:

And based on floridakilos' tea regarding the fact that most insiders/leakers don't have Candy Necklace, this is definitely Black Bathing Suit redux (last-minute addition to the tracklist + similar spot on the tracklist (track 6 v. track 5! right after an interlude!) + similar length (5:14 v. 5:18)! lol).
