Lust For Life - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll

Heroin's bridge is iconic. Lana has always loved the imagery of something being so cold its hot, or even vice versa. Thats what makes it so fucking genius. "It's fucking HOT, HOT! - Winter in the city - Something bout this weather made these kids go crazy... It's HOT, even for february... Something bout this sun has made these kids get scary..." It sounds like a fucking trip. She's hot, like really hot, but its actually really cold? Is she having a heat flash because of drug withdrawal? because of all of her mixed emotions about trying to change? She's fed up, shes tired, shes confused, and its just a lot, and she'd be lyin if she said she wasn't sick of it - both the Drug addiction/withdrawal (perhaps literally)) as well as the deeper stuff that this song is all a huge metaphor for. It's brilliant. And Lana just singing it like a ballad wouldn't convey these emotions correctly. Honestly, when she sang it live in a snippet and she sang "Oh my GODDD" -- she could've even went that far on the studio. We love a rock star tbh. Bring out those Lizzy vocals QUEEN. -
Hopes for the Cherry Video
AphroditeBaby replied to Make me your Dream Life's topic in Lana Thoughts
I just hope she releases it On the other hand, The Love Witch is a next level feminist inspired film and Anna's aesthetic is very quintessential Lana femme fatale in my mind. I first heard of Love Witch from a fan-made video that used Maha Maha in it, and honestly, that song could've been in the film, its perfect. If they never collaborate on anything, I'll be upset. -
Please let us get this one, merciful god. I can live without Bartender, but Sylvia Plath has always been one of my favorite poets and Lana is one of my favorite songwriters. I'll kill for this.

Wow, a concept. I love it. Honestly, such a masterpiece of a track.

UV = HM > LFL (barely) > Paradise > BTD This is the truth. LFL would beat HM but it has consistency issues that are kind of jarring as a whole project conceptually. However, LFL has amazing highs, and no real "lows". I think, me not being as depressed as I was from 2014-2016, LFL is more enjoyable to listen to though than Honeymoon.I have to be in a mood for Honeymoon and its active listening. LFL can be listened to somewhat casually, but also benefits from active listening. -
Got it. Thanks. Whew, the clapback queen.

what pics? Sorry, I tried to search for this, but I am not sure.

Radiohead Sues Lana for Copyright Infringement on "Get Free"
AphroditeBaby replied to reputation's topic in Latest News
The bottom line is that it going to court is to the detriment of musicians and music copyright in general. All of the intent and effect out the window, if its tried in America (and it would be) a Jury would decide this by a matter of hearing them and thinking they sound similar and not knowing enough about music, will decide its copyright infringement. I hope Lanas team and Radiohead's team do the right thing and decide it out of court. -
The chorus of Get Free makes me so emotional. Imagine a full out performance of this track with the band too. She sang it so sensitively here, and I melted when she said "the darkness from my heart" (I'm remembering how like 40% salty I was when I first heard this amazing song about the lack of a proper bridge, like amongst so many great 5 minute songs with bridges in Lana's discography, how dare this one not have one )

Radiohead Sues Lana for Copyright Infringement on "Get Free"
AphroditeBaby replied to reputation's topic in Latest News
They are right; it would be better decided out of court; not only for their sake, but for the sake of working musicians in general to not expand copyright restrictions in published music. "Credit where credit is due" to me implies some kind of plagiarism. Should Radiohead/The Hollies receive credit for something that Lana + co created without their involvement? The law may not care about intent, but this phrase kinda rubs me the wrong way. Maybe I'm overreacting. Is our society one where a musical idea or two's entire merit can be boiled down to "who put it to paper first"? I understand receiving financial compensation for an idea, but in general that seems kinda silly to me. If you can't tell, I'm firmly on the side of Lana did not intentionally use the melody/chord progression from Creep. For the verses in the last track on an album? Not even the chorus, bridge, instrumental, etc? Just one vocal melody? (and while its quite similar, its not exactly the same, which I think is still really important) That just seems like such a stupid idea. I hope no one on either team honestly believes it was intentional. I just hope it gets worked out. Get Free is an incredibly beautiful and moving song in Lana's discography and its definitely not because of any kind of similarity to one of the most overrated alt-rock songs in history *edit* Vulture had a musicologist come up with a sort of lead sheet version of both (in the same key) : https://pixel.nymag.com/imgs/daily/vulture/2018/01/11/11-sheet-music.nocrop.w710.h2147483647.jpg They also came up with the point that along with chord progression, rhythm is a musical element that can't be a part of the claim, so it really does default to the melody. (As their rhythms are quite different in duration and a lot more - some of it because of lyrics) But the melody isn't actually the same, its similar. Rhythm aside, there are distinctly different intervals, and seeing as how neither of these songs are classical compositions, I think musicologists arguing that Lana's verses melody being an ornamented or slightly varied version of Creep's verses holds little merit... Unless of course you presuppose that Creep did in fact inspire Get Free's verses. Based on how you interpret this, The verses are an ornamented form of Creep because its inspired, or the rhythm and melodic intervals are actually different because this song wasn't composed with Creep in mind at all. It's a subtle, nuanced mess, like much of music and all the more reason a jury and even judge should not be deciding this kind of thing in court. -
I'm dead. I was literally about to get on a train like an hour ago (just got back ) I hope she gets better... and that there is a makeup date. But like, I don't have the money to fly to chicago for Thursday, I won't be able to make it in time taking a train unless I skip all of my classes (which I can't do ) I'm heartbroken.
-
I'm going to this tomorrow (skipping all my classes too, whoops), is anyone else? I have seats (though I'm starting to wish I had gotten GA since I KNOW it won't be full and maybe I wouldn't die in the pit as hard ) Feels like theres no hype, and I expect it to be one of the worst selling places on the tour (perhaps because its the first time she's ever been to Missouri as I can recall), but I am still going to fucking enjoy myself. I hope its not demoralizing for her though.

Radiohead Sues Lana for Copyright Infringement on "Get Free"

I absolutely love what she said last night Regardless of what happens, she wants the fans to know that she meant what she wrote when she wrote this record and she still wants (all of us) to head for that better place. The song might get destroyed, removed from the record, whatever (who knows) but things would still be okay. She won't curl up into a ball and take this as a sign that things aren't supposed to change and get better. I know I sound so freaking gushy, but this song actually means a lot to me and I'll defend it to the death, however its sentiment is enough. -

Oh wow. Even if it gets taken down (Get Free), she wants the real fans to know that this song is important to her and the sentiment will always remain. How sad. I wonder if she thinks its going to lose in court.
