The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey - "THE ABYSS" - OUT NOW!
Rita Hayworth replied to That Venice Bitch's topic in New Releases
Haha yeah kinda, I mean don’t call me angel is actually a bad song, I don’t think the abyss is bad - it just doesn’t engage me very much sadly. I’ll be very excited when (or if) TRPWS drops tho -
It has been ongoing for years, pretty much until he was arrested. Beyonce and Jay Z have been silent for 20+ years on it, plus Diddy’s depravity was well known in Hollywood, especially his inner circle. They all knew he was a predator and they enabled him by doing nothing.
-
It does upset me though, I always really liked Beyonce, but since learning more about her husband and all the Diddy stuff, I can’t look at them the same. And her music falls flat on me now..

This could be the last grammy Beyoncé wins, god knows what will come out of Diddy’s trial(s?)…

It’s lovely I agree, but not worth it to listen to the full song again and that’s just my opinion, so no it’s not actually that bad for me -

I think it’s a conscious decision to change the tone of her voice for different songs, I don’t think the year makes much of a difference, I strongly suspect she still has the vocal clarity and agility (think about Blue Skies) to sing how she did in BTD and Ultraviolence (e.g shades of cool). But she is also like over a decade older, and probably just wants to adapt it to suit her age. Can’t be doing that baby voice when you’re almost 40. (You deffo can, but it does not have the same effect). -

I didn’t think she could make any changes production wise at this point. I’m pretty sure it takes 6 months to have vinyls made in time for the album release, and it’s only four months until it’s supposedly meant to be released. But idk that’s just what I thought, I might be wrong. -
I love them! Their rendition of The Plains Of Mexico is one of my favourites of their’s !

Maybe she is reserving her enthusiasm for closer to the time because she’s that proud of it and she doesn’t want the surprise to be ruined -
Reading this thread I’ve been having some thoughts. Please don’t take this the wrong way. Why is it so bad to criticise Lana? Is she exempt from occasionally making wrong decisions because she is incredibly talented or because she’s our favourite singer? No. She can still do questionable things, and she can be criticised for the problematic behaviour of people she chooses to surround herself with. There’s a clear pattern that has been going on recently. Lana has stopped engaging as much with her fandom, and probably rightly so. She needs to protect her mental health, her privacy and dignity. When every single thing you say publicly/online gets so heavily scrutinised and twisted, I don’t blame her for not wanting to speak out much on this topic. However all this does is give way to speculation. There’s this theory called Occam’s razor which suggests the simplest explanation to events, is usually the most likely one. Sadly the situation here is that we are left to consider, does Lana really just share all the same right wing values of her partner, or does she just simply does not care what political side he aligns himself with because she is blindly in love. But I’ve read so much convoluted gibberish in Thais thread and I just don’t see much point in speculating. I guess we will never know, she doesn’t owe us an explanation either. So I’ve come to believe there’s not much point in holding her to any expectations. Just enjoy the art.

I agree with this for the most part, but I guess you never know what could be going on in people’s lives behind the scenes, and not all negative experiences in life necessitate a romanticised song about it. So you never know really. However, to further add to what you were saying, Lana has been making music like almost 20 years (if not more?), if she was gonna give up, she would have done it when she wasn’t getting any traction, as Lizzy Grant. But now she has that voice she’s always wanted, and people want to listen to what she says. I don’t think that’ll ever change either. -

Pretty Girls Make Graves, Bigmouth Strikes Again, How Soon Is Now? (The Smiths) I have been rotating between these songs for about a week, I love when I remember that the smiths exist and that we’re from the same city.

Yes you’re right OB is actually quite versatile. I love the album, never stop spinning the vinyl its so precious. I’m kinda over all the stripped back stuff now though, or maybe I’m not over ‘stripped back’ per se, but I’m over her version of stripped back. And I’m not an huge fan of the autotune…Even the bops on OB, Lana’s vocals are sometimes indiscernible, I’d have loved clearer vocals on Peppers for example. The mixing works more for that song than others on the album though (fishtail ) Holly Macve’s folk/country(ish) album Golden Eagle is a nice example of how I’d like Lana’s album to be. Not necessarily the same kinda stuff, but still somewhat upbeat despite the stripped back approach. Like in the songs Heartbreak Blues or No One Has The Answers. -
Blue Banisters - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll

Yeah the casual reference to BLM was so distasteful, I think I understand what she means, but she definitely must have had a sudden rush of bravery to actually leave it in the album, considering the climate at the time of its release. And I completely understand those who criticised her for it, at the end of the day she put it into a romantic song about someone else. The lyrics are so diluted, like she’s comparing her boyf to her dad, then she’s talking about being at a BLM protest “screaming for them”… it makes no sense. All that being said, I’m not gonna lie it sounds lovely. I love the dissonance between her vocals and the instrumentation, it’s definitely one of her most experimental songs. If the lyrics had been changed it could have been a great listening experience. It’s a shame, it has such potential as an opener. -

I keep fluctuating in how I feel about this album, on the one hand I’m eagerly awaiting (since I can’t stop returning here) and on the other, I’m like eh so what another acoustic album. I’m literally yearning for a little versatility on this album… don’t get me wrong I actually love most songs on albums since BB, but I’m left craving for more summer wine…. lol. Seriously, a bit of energy and excitement in this album would make me happy.
