""Hello," I call to no one (But)"

a haiku from VBBOTG:

Open the front door
hello I say to no one
I know no one’s home

i went to the montreal jazz fest and saw syml in concert!

he played "i wanted to leave" (the sample for paris, texas) and said he really enjoyed collaborating with lana and that she's a rly nice person. he told us the story of how paris, texas came to be and that lana facetimed him and asked if she could collab and he was like... ok? it was honestly so hilarious.

i honestly never heard of his music so i went to the show not knowing what to expect but i was blown away, his music is amazing, and hes a rly cool guy as well.

Today I woke thinking something I've been thinking about this last two months

I moved in with a friend of mine into his family house

But the have really big issues and they fight a lot. I feel like I shouldn't be finding out about any of this

When you know you know it's time, it's time to go:(

I don't wanna go, but I feel it's the best thing to do for me. I guess I'm staying because of my friend and because I like the time we spent together

This song is so Coraline, and if you don't get it than you never will.

This composition… is how it felt like to be moving to a major city all alone as an adult after your whole lifetime growing up as an even more clueless child—coming from a small town and had to leave everything… never not playing this song when i’m on the train after leaving my boarding house for college…

Found this interview, in which SYML describes how the song came about:

Quote

ON TOP OF THE NEW ALBUM, another major moment for Fennell this year came when the iconoclastic singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey released her critically vaunted, garrulously titled ninth album, “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.” Fennell appears on the 10th track, “Paris, Texas,” which is, essentially, Del Rey singing hauntedly on top of an instrumental piece evoking a music-box waltz, “I Wanted to Leave,” Fennell had shared on an instrumental EP nodding to his classical-piano roots.

A longtime fan of the singer — he’d regularly performed a cover of her 2012 hit “Summertime Sadness” in the early SYML days, for instance — Fennell speculates that Del Rey had become hip to the track after it had received some attention on TikTok. After she tried reaching out through Barcelona’s old email account, which Fennell said no one checks anymore, she texted him to see whether he could FaceTime, which they did for an hour.

“She was essentially asking my blessing to make (the song) her own,” Fennell said. “And it was cool — she really wanted to take the time and be insistent that she knows that this is a song: it’s not just some background music.”

For both collaborators, the song is a homesick one, Fennell said. What was crazy, he added, was that he’d written it while he was in Paris and that when Del Rey decided to name the song after the 1984 Wim Wenders movie “Paris, Texas,” she had no idea about the connection. Once the pair finally met in person at a show, they hit it off.

“The thing that struck me when we first met was just that how much — for lack of a better term — she doesn’t give a f---,” he said. “She’s like, ‘I turn in my records when I’m done, and I’m not interested in anybody else’s opinion about it other than the people I choose to collaborate with.’ She says it in a way that’s not like a Madonna. It’s very much, like, ‘I’m the boss of myself, and I’m gonna do what I want; if it’s commercially successful is inconsequential.’ It’s the vibe I get from her, which is admirable.”
