Lana's obsession with the clolour blue...#LANALYSIS

Recommended Posts

Well, I assumed it was because of her old love Boy Blue/Baby Blue, he still even gets a mention these days in songs like  West Coast. He's nearly as present in her memories as Jimmy is.

Also the fact that it's a colour and a mood she often believes herself to be in

I've always thought of this lyric as being a metaphor for a bruise - 'I love your ultraviolent swing'; he hit Lana and turned her skin 'from black to blue', as in it went black from the punch, then a blue colour as it bruised. So it's kinda similar to thr 'hit me and felt like a kiss' line. But I might be reading too much into it.

I like that as well! Doesn't contradict what I said though, blue overshadows her whole life, sadness she got used to.

They call you baby blue cause its your favorite colooour boy!

I agree with blue being associated with sadness BUT "you turn my mood from black to blue" -> black is prob deep depression and blue is actually happy but with a sad undertone.. I'm thinking of this interview:

Oh, what if BLUE stands for "sadcore"? OMG..."Ultraviolent swing"..."hit me and it felt like a kiss"..."you turn my mood from black to blue"...

Bruises have a kind of blue/purple/black colour. ULTRAVIOLENCE!!! :hdu: :hdu: :hdu: :hdu:

LMAO I literally just saw this :lmao:

This shows how transparent Lana is, and it validates the reason why I give her such praise for her songwriting. The girl is, in my opinion, a musical genius. She has so many layers, and I like that she is able to articulate it through her writing. This constant use of the word "blue." I would have never thought of it. Work, Ultraviolenc3.

Well in HDB she says "you turn my mood from black to blue"

To me, I consider black to be a color that represents a mood worse than blue. Like, not depressed, but possibly suicidal (or something equivalent). Although blue is typically associated with feeling sad, in HDB I think she considers feeling blue a hell of a lot better than feeling black. I'm not much for crazy analyzing Lana's lyrics, but I think she was implying that even though Jimmy's ultra-violent swing and the way he treated her mean (making her feel blue), was a lot better than when she was feeling nothing at all (black)

Does this make any sense?

Nothing scares me anymore.

:yesnod: Lana is the female, younger, songwriter version of Vladimir Nabokov!

What is a "clolour?"tumblr_n3vr5coeZC1qf8btso1_500.gif

:troll:

I JUST REALISED THIS!!!! I thought you were going to give us a report on what a colour is and explain that colours can represent moods and feeling and expressions, et cetera, I didn't realise that you said "clolour" and that the title of this topic was spelt like that!

All I can think of is ...

You wish and wish, and wish again
You've tried so hard to fly
You'll never leave your body now
You've got to wait to die

La la la la la la la la la la (x2)
La la la la la (x2)
Silly Boy Blue, silly Boy Blue

Child of Tibet, you're a gift from the sun
Reincarnation of one better man
The homeward road is long
You've left your prayers and song
Silly Boy Blue, silly Boy Blue

"Walk on the Wild Side" is a Lou Reed song from his 1972 second solo album Transformer. It was produced by David Bowie.

The road is long, we carry on
Try to have fun in the meantime

Come on take a walk on the wild side
Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain
You like your girls insane
Choose your last words, this is the last time
Cause you and I, we were born to die

“I think the album was called ‘Ultraviolence’ before I even had the songs. That’s because I just really love words. I’m kind of inspired by just a one-word title. For this one, I had a motif of hydrangeas in mind. Mainly because these flowers I love are in shades of blue and violet and when I was talking to Dan [Auerbach] about inspirations and color tones, this sort of high violet vibration was on my mind. Maybe because blue is connected with jazz and also sorrow.”

This is the blue I can find from Ultraviolence;

West Coast: "That's why I'm leaving you for the moment, you for the moment, boy blue, yeah, you"
Shades Of Cool: "My baby lives in shades of blue" "Blue eyes and jazz and attitude" "I'm one of many boniness blue"
Old Money: "Blue hydrangea, cold cash divine"
Guns And Roses: "See you workin' on that blue"
Black Beauty: "Nothing, my sparrow blue" "Sun and ocean blue" "Seem so dark blue"

Missed any?

Maybe, hypothetically, it was one of her ex's favorite colors and maybe he says that she looked good in blue and so it reminds her of him? (Thinking of Jimmy, in particular, "Jimmy pulls up in his blue Chevy Nova")

She also uses "red dress" a lot, too. Maybe it's just to describe the way things were. Baby Blue might just be a shade of the color or a slight sadness, since blue means sad. Blue just might've been a color that she remembers a lot of? There's a lot of questions about her that I wish interviewers would ask, but they never do. (You can tell most of them aren't really fans...)

Lana's Songs are obsessed with the color blue, and I love thinking she feels some sort of connection with that particular shade (of cool). Not only do Blue Jeans, Blue Velvet, Baby Blue Love, & Pawn Shop Blues have it in their titles, but over three songs from each of her studio albums have 'blue' somewhere in their lyrics. That's gotta mean something, right? The appearance of 'blue' in her later work is almost always used to convey a mood or feeling or atmosphere, and I'd love to know what both Lizzy and Lana think about when they use the word in their writing. What exact mood is she trying to capture and describe? Blue, I guess. Anyway, here's every mention of the word blue in Lana's studio album catalog. Enjoy and let it consume you as much as I am.
