Norman Fucking Rockwell - Pre-Release Thread

omg could it be john frusciante?? he's the RHCP's iconic former guitarist & most definitely a musical hermit!! he's not exactly retired, but hasn't released music in a while (and when he does, it's always stuff he recorded years before) and hasn't done a live show since 2008 or something like that. that would give her "RHCP influences" comment a whole new meaning, omg... edit: as a frusciante stan & someone who knows his m.o. and views on music, this would be sf huge that i actually have trouble believing this possibility myself tbh. -

i don't think it will be, but i agree. i like the colors & how simple the background is with just the cement and the utility poles. i think it would look amazing in the vinyl cover. -
ooh yes, it def explains the 2 cats in the yard! and the "life is hard" part can also be a nod to it (tho it's also something she sang abt before)

find my half-baked theory about HTD in this post!!!

only listened to the album once so far, but it def requires repeated listens - it kinda reminded me of Blonde that way (also in terms of concept & being a far more experimental followup to a super successful album). the highlights for me were Things I Imagined & especially My Skin My Logo. also, the artwork is amazing!!

idk how popular an opinion this will be, but i kinda wish she added BAR to NFR. maybe a slightly rearranged version, idk, but i think it would fit into what we know so far abt the mood/theme of NFR perfectly. -
Lana's Inspirations & Influences
bummersummer replied to lanakissmeinyourchevrolet's topic in Lana Thoughts
i wish this thread hadn't died, there's so much interesting stuff here already but so much is also missing... it should have almost as many pages as lanalysis, since it gives us so much insight into lana's interests & consequently her as a person imo. anyway, trying to revive this with some NFR related content, i guess... Robert Frost's poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" - possibly via The Outsiders too? this part is obv speculation, but it seems like the kind of thing she'd like & reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOwPaC3ZaQQ Slim Aarons & his photos of celebrities, socialites and luxurious/ostentatious lifestyles in general; he's also noted for the poolside setting of many of this photos. Sylvia Plath, ofc. namely this poem which references stumbling from bed in a victorian nightgown (ty Genius.com) now indulge me for a sec - and i honestly KNOW this is prob a stretch, but i was just having too much trying to connect the dots to not at least mention it: in How To Disappear, she mentions a John, a Jim, leaving NYC for California, a kid, California sun & movie stars. if it weren't for John & the kid, i would've just chalked it all down as regular Lana themes and imagery. BUT those 2 things made me wonder, and suddenly it all clicked: Joan Didion. - i mean, she's THE iconic Cali writer and in another post i & Trash Magic wondered whether Lana had been inspired by Didion's famous Corvette photoshoot for the UV cover and promo pics - anyone's who's watched the critically acclaimed "The Center Will Not Hold" Netflix doc knows Didion (a NorCal native) lived in NYC for a few years and then moved back to California - this happened after one morning she started crying out of nowhere while having breakfast with her husband John Gregory Dunne ("John met me down at the boulevard / I cried on his shoulder 'cause life is hard / The waves came in over my head") and he quickly realized that she missed Cali and both decided it was time to leave NYC (Well now, it's been years since I left New York); Didion's also a noted anxious-depressive. - she's known for having written an essay about Jim Morrison & The Doors recording at a studio in Sunset Blvd; she was already there when Jim arrived, late & presumably high; the band then stayed there a long time and the album they were recording took weeks to finish (Jim met me down at the training yard (training yard = metaphor for a studio?) (...) And I watched the guys getting high as they fight / For the things that they hold dear). - now the really bizarre part for a Lana song: "'I've got a kid and two cats in the yard" - guess who had a kid? Didion, who adopted a girl around that same time and moved from HW to a big house in Malibu. no idea about the 2 cats, tho. - also: "The California sun and the movie stars / And I watched the skies getting light as I write / As I think about those years" - Didion & her husband were screenplay writers and frequently had movie stars in their house; also Didion, beyond writing personal essays, also wrote at least 2 memoirs about her life so she'd def write "while thinking about those years") ok so tl;dr: i don't think the song is about Didion, but i think it could be inspired by certain facts of her life that Lana might identify with or relate to (after all, she also went from NYC to LA, has a dark temperament, lives or lived in Malibu, considers herself a writer & is obsessed with a lot of the themes Didion dealt with in her writing). now call me delusional or inspired, but lemme hear your thoughts!!! edit: BONUS 1 BONUS 2 -
interestingly i associate several of the films you mentioned to other lana albums instead of the ones you did, but omfg, what a SICK LIST!! (espesh the ones in bold)

no, i'm with you. i also associate certain songs to certain types of weather / times of day & even specific visuals like those you mentioned - she's always been a cinematic queen & imo one of her best qualities is being able to evoke a given mood so vividly. it's also cool bc while certain songs are like, end of summer sunset type songs, i enjoy listening to them in, say, the dead of winter bc they immediately transport you to another season. -

i'm SO into this. ofc this is without knowing if any of the new songs are better openers or closers, but i particularly believe VB should close the album. then again i don't think that'll happen as she seems to prefer less "open-ended" songs as closers, since Heroin & The Blackest Day were in the final part of the album but were never the last song (not to mention Cruel World used as opening track in UV)... btw do we know anything more about the whole ~RHCP vibe~ she initially talked about or what she meant with it (funk? catchy riffs? obnoxious repetitive lyrics about Califonia lol)? she mentioned it more than once & then there was the halloween video with the 2 RHCP songs, but none of the songs released so far remind me of RHCP in the slightest, so i'm at a loss. -

so i was just reading this essay abt pics of marilyn monroe reading (basically abt how people still don't believe she was cultured & the old "pretty OR smart, not both" stereotype) & came across this paragraph that mentions Lana: it's from the artist that came up with the sad girl theory mentioned in the article in this post btw & she's a Lana fan, ofc. since we're all bored and frustrated rn, i thought maybe someone here might be interested. -
