@@AphroditeBaby free-form is indeed not everyone's cup of tea, but my main gripe with this particular poem is that she seems to equate free-form with "anything goes" - meaning, since it's free-form you can do/write anything you like and will eschew criticism just because it's not formal poetry, when in reality it's one of the hardest forms of poetry to write without it turning into blatant copy or cringeworthy cliché. i agree with you & @@Hannus though, this is (afaik) self-published and mostly for fans, but i'm still disappointed by this preview because to be frank i did expect a lot more than this puerile attempt at poetry from a 33yo.

for a lyrics book or something just for fans, sure. but for a book with pretensions of "serious poetry"? oh yes it is.
-
i'm gonna be brutally honest here: if that poem is representative of the whole book... she's gonna be ridiculed & called yet another indulgent celeb who thinks talent in one area equals talent in another and who only got published because of her name - and probably rightfully so, sorry to say.

Norman Fucking Rockwell - Pre-Release Thread

add The Blackest Day (6:06) and you have her best released songs per album/era so far. i see a pattern... -
late af but this book is like my obsession so i just have to reply lol. idk if you've read it since, but i loved it so. much. i know it was a critical success, but a lot of people who read it were disappointed because it wasn't the mansonesque thriller it was marketed as but a coming-of-age introspective story abt a not-always-likeable main character who becomes fascinated with another girl and kinda stumbles into a cult bc of it. emma cline is such a good writer, her descriptions of what is is to be a teen girl were sf accurate and beautiful. anyway, if i ever meet lana irl i'm gonna ask her if she's read this book bc i'm 95% sure she has & i wanna bond, lol.

just started Twentynine Palms by Deanne Stillman (non fiction abt 2 girls murdered in the Mojave by a marine), but these 2 are in my immediate to-read list: - The Pillow Book by Sei Shonagon (diary of a 11th century japanese courtesan) - Animals Eat Each Other by Elle Nash (fiction abt a girl who starts an obsessive poly relationship with a m/f couple)

Lana Song You're Currently Obsessed With
bummersummer replied to LifeisBeautiful's topic in Lana Thoughts
possibly the most underappreciated song in her whole discog tbh. -
very unlikely. Tarantino rarely (if ever - i can't think of a single example) uses original music in his films, he usually picks already existing obscure-ish songs. and tbh i can't imagining him choosing songs from Lana's discog, he'll prob go for some niche psychedelic scene from the 60s or whatever.

Lana spotted at Hillsong again - January 30, 2019
bummersummer replied to Peachycream's topic in Sightings
i actually think that even if she isn't donating money to hillsong, she's still hurting people by associating with & supporting an organization with those core values, especially since it's not one she was raised into (unlike, say, the catholic church) but one she actually got to choose. but my comment wasn't specifically about hillsong, but generally about people/fan's expectations re: her behavior just because she's this or that age. i'm not saying that's her case, but some people are self-destructive and immature right until the end and that's got nothing to do with age. also the notion of a life worth living is very different from person to person, so any of us would just be projecting our own ideals of a fulfilling life onto her. (not to mention that all our assumptions come from a very small glimpse of her life that we have mostly via social media.) any of us can feel concern and express it, but ultimately it's her life and choices and i 100% respect that whether i disagree with them or not (as i would anyone else's). i also feel that, morally wrong as it undoubtedly is, people are overreacting when it comes to the meaning of this hillsong debacle by treating it as sign of catastrophe or of a life spiraling out of control when we have no idea about her reasons for doing it or what's going on in her life right now. -

while i don't necessarily agree that being an adult is synonym with, or even a reason for, acting responsibly or maturely (especially when you have no children or partner or anyone else depending on you - i mean, that's an actual life choice, to choose to have no strings attached in order to have the freedom to do whatever you want as long as it doesn't harm anyone but yourself), i think your assessment of Lana vs Lizzy is on point. i'd even go as far as saying that not even Lana was ever a true leader because Lizzy has always been lurking beneath the surface & the only thing that varies is to what extent she's allowed to show herself. -

i don't know what you think a cult is, but they don't advertise themselves as such & usually don't look like a bunch of hippies singing kumbaya barefoot in the Mojave while practicing free love. a cult can be anything - a church, an ashram, a wellness program, even a pyramid scheme like fucking herbalife. and re: AA, for over a decade there's been lots of claims about their cultish nature, both from former members & from organizations that watch possible cult activity - both about AA as a whole, but also (and mostly) about specific regional groups; one of the most frequently mentioned is the Atlantic Group in NY, which Lana used to attend. anyway, none of this info is obscure, a simple google search will give you loads of receipts. -
Lana leaving Hillsong Chuch in Los Angeles, California - January 22, 2019
bummersummer replied to Elle's topic in Sightings
i don't see any track marks at all. it also makes 0 sense she'd inject herself on her right arm when she's right handed. besides, if we're really going down the heroin conspiracy theory route, there's several other ways to use it & most people rarely start by injecting it. -

i don't really see the connection between going to a hillsong church & allegedly having been seen doing heroin once back in 2016, but ok. -

she truly is into cults, huh -
this, and i also don't really care about different eras in terms of looks & aesthetic. or let me rephrase that: i do, but about the mood/vibe/aesthetic/however-you-wanna-call-it that each album has musically & lyrically, i just don't care if she dresses in adidas for one era instead of vintage dresses or chola makeup.

she'd make a perfect femme fatale imo, but i can also imagine her as an aloof, depressed housewife from the 50s or something who's always on the verge of dissociating. unoriginal answer, but i'd def love to see her in some collaboration with David Lynch. agree with what other people said re: mafia movies & specifically think she'd make a fab Elvira Hancock in a hypothetical remake of Scarface. on a slightly different note, i think she could be great in a PTA movie à la Boogie Nights or Inherent Vice, and after Lynch the other director i'd LOVE to see her work with is Paul Verhoeven - a movie somewhere between Showgirls & Elle would be THE DREAM for me.

Lana to Perform at Jack Antonoff's Ally Coalition Talent Show
bummersummer replied to nationalxanthem's topic in Shows
the woman is literally out there singing country songs & has included everything from trap beats to psych to alt rock to bubblegum pop to folk in her albums, and people still complain about her not evolving? what does she need to do for people to be happy, death metal vocals? -
omg this, i want nothing more than a follow-up to Heartstrings <3

it's been almost a month & i'm still totally in love with this album. fave songs are tammy faye, snake, and beautiful & bad, with honorable mentions to chapel & my baby. LOVE the distorted high-pitched wailing in lacrymaria olor, but somehow i like that more than the whole song itself. i love the way she re-worked the already existing songs & overall prefer the 2nd half of the album to the 1st in terms of sound/aesthetic, but my only criticism is that the 2 halves don't really feel cohesive. it's like listening to 2 different albums - which could have been an intentional choice, but i kinda doubt that; or if it was, i don't think the idea was very well accomplished - even the sound quality & volume of the mix are different, and the transition from heart shaped bed to snake is jarring. like, we totally hear/feel the time lapse between the first 5 songs & the last. i read her stereogum profile/interview and it def seems like she had a hard time finishing this album due to now having a bigger audience/touring & fearing being criticized bc of her morbid/un-PC themes, so that could explain it, idk. anyway. tl;dr, the album isn't perfect but i still love it & will be playing the shit out of it this winter. <3

i was also v pleasantly surprised by the show! i was expecting a rehash of 90s Sabrina, but this darker/scarier version was so much better. i did prefer the first 2 thirds or so of the show to the last episodes tho, which i thought were a lot more cliché & predictable.

lol in fairness my fave unreleased songs are usually the least whimsical but beyond that, to me it's like... for one, there's a reason why those songs are unreleased, much as i love them. most of them were written a decade or more ago, and a lot of the repetition & tackiness is explained/justified by the fact that she's a prolific writer but not everything was meant to be heard by the general public. i mean, a lot of them give us a glimpse into her writing process rather than being finished products, and we hear her experimenting with melodies, imagery, themes, etc. but above all, i expect evolution and improvement from a musician, not staying stuck in the past endlessly recycling lyrics/themes that she'd write about when she was 22. i know a lot of people want her to go back to Lizzy & even BTD era, and that's fine, but i just don't.
