Cinnamon Girl versus Happiness is a Butterfly

I tried to add a poll but it won't lemme. Also, my arguments were 100% srs and I'm very offended that people are saying I lost so you don't deserve a poll anyway. Can one of you add a poll please it crashes when I try @@PARADIXO @@YUNGATA @Elle Just "which song is better?" with the two options. -

Yes, you break Twitter when you vote multiple times for the wrong song. -

FUNNY how, when I look at the analytics, it turns out that 4 people have cast 12 votes! Which means SOMEONE is voting multiple times because they're desperate! -

Cinnamon Girl versus Happiness is a Butterfly

Referenced! Plagiarised! Either way, this would entail her knowing/remembering who Anna Pavlova actually is and I feel like that's reaching. It's not like she'd be reading about Anna in that Women Running with the Wolves type literature she skims reads! I'm not saying that you're saying that she is happy on stage, I'm saying that you're saying that she's looking for happiness on stage. Is that why she's always late, because she can't find it? According to you, that's where she's looking for happiness! So let me rephrase: at her unhappy shows where she's looking for happiness. NEVER HAD A PERSONA. NEVER NEEDED ONE. Well, in this song, she specifically refers to night, as being, well, night ... so I'm assuming she's referring to day as being the part when it isn't night. You leave my aUsTrALiaN SkoOl alone! Your school was populated by students who ate entire heads of lettuces! Both cinnamon and pills are things you put in your mouth, okay?! But I guess that's a fair point because you catch both butterflies and serial killers. Lullabies, though?! You've failed to tell me what the weakest part is because your argument is weaker than Lanz's Twitter password! I didn't notice; I was too busy scoffing at the terrible lyrics! -
Cinnamon Girl versus Happiness is a Butterfly

So you're suggesting that sis plagiarised Anna Pavlova (which, in and of itself, doesn't really support your argument)? As if sis even knows who she is; she doesn't even know the lyrics to her own songs. Sis hates performing and often looks miserable af. Which part is her chasing happiness? Is she searching for happiness in Google, because she has been known to Google her own lyrics during shows? Agreed about goth butterflies. I'll let you have that. I'd like to point out that she actually has performed Cinnamon Girl at these ... happy shows you speak of ... several times, whilst never once performing your song. Honestly, she would've been better off making it "Happiness is Mango-Flavoured Vape" . That would actually make sense because she can't put it down even when accepting awards and it's impossible to catch the vapour. HIAB just doesn't make sense, literally or figuratively. I've talked about how it doesn't make sense literally, but figuratively - as discussed, she clearly hates performing. I remember someone said that it's about her trying to find happiness with her lover in the evenings - I mean, okay, but why is the daytime a lullaby? What? So she's distressed during the day? Why not catch some butterflies, then? What does a (rhetorical or otherwise) serial killer have to do with butterflies, and tour life, and lullabies? Like, this song is so fragmented. There is a wild assortment of ideas within the one song, and none of them complement each other, and go nowhere. Cinnamon Girl is far more cohesive. It flows and makes sense. Okay but you love MAC and he used his Fisher-Price keyboard in that, too! And honestly, it's like choosing between Cholera or Typhoid, because it's not as if the piano in HIAB is anywhere near as good as the one used in say, Bartender. But we all agree that lyrics don't have to be complex for the song to be good. HIAB's lyrics aren't complex, don't make sense and are all over the place. Okay so sis copied Lorde and St Vincent, then?! BAT EARS. -
@@movebaby and I will now stage an (in)formal debate about which song is better: Cinnamon Girl or Happiness is a Butterfly. Of course, supporting arguments from other participants are welcome, but only if you are of the correct opinion that Cinnamon Girl is better than Happiness is a Butterfly. Otherwise, please leave. So SHE thinks HIAB is better and SHE'S wrong. Additionally, SHE isn't allowed to talk about technical piano stuff, because SHE knows about piano stuff and I don't and it isn't fair. Therefore, the debate will be about everything else. So anyway, Cinnamon Girl is far better than Happiness is a Butterfly. HIAB revolves around a butterfly metaphor, which is both overused and flawed. I mean, Pearl Jam did that back in like 1994 with Even Flow, and it didn't need to be done again. Happiness is a butterfly Try to catch it like every night It escapes from my hands into moonlight Every day is a lullaby I hum it on the phone like every night And sing it for my babies on the tour life Ah ah So, first of all, nobody catches butterflies at night. I mean, good luck finding one? So either Lanz was holding one captive during daylight hours only to release it at night, and/or she's on some starlit expedition in the wilderness disturbing poor, sleeping butterflies at night. In other words, it's just stupid. As I said on another thread, it should've been called "Happiness is a Firefly" because fireflies come out at night. Butterflies? No. The entire premise is flawed. Also, what do lullabies have to do with butterflies? Lullabies are happy, sleep-inducing songs. So is every day a lullaby because sis is exhausted from chasing butterflies in the wilderness all night long? Make it make sense. Let's not even talk about that "tour babies" line because it's simply vile. Happiness is a butterfly We should catch it while dancing I lose myself in the music, baby Every day is a lullaby Try to catch it like lightning I sing it into my music, I'm crazy So now she's trying to catch the lullaby like lightning? What? If he's a serial killer, then what's the worst That could happen to a girl who's already hurt? Gee, I don't know, Lanz. Maybe you could be horrifically murdered? Okay and not only does the song suddenly and inexplicably become obnoxiously loud when she sings the following lines, it's also overused Jackoff garbage. I said, "don't be a jerk, don't call me a taxi" Sitting in your sweatshirt, crying in the backseat Ooh I don't even remember which songs have some bitch sitting in the back of a taxi but I'm pretty sure he put similar lines in songs he did with Lorde and St Vincent. I'll let @@movebaby present a lyrical counter-argument now and then I'll put her in her place.

This response is vague as hell. Which lyrics are mature and clever? Which part is honest? Can you describe this "sonic world"? How is it more mature, clever, honest and atmospheric than her other albums? If you like it better then ofc that's absolutely fine but you should be able to explain why it resonates with you more so than her other albums.

^ Yes, more and more people are questioning if this acclaim could be interchangeable, and it's a pertinent question to ask. Almost 300 pages of this thread and I don't think anyone has adequately explained how and why NFR is so superior and more deserving of acclaim than her previous albums. People have just cited review scores and ranted about Jack Antonoff. How is NFR superior sonically, lyrically, etc? Serious question for those who think it's her best.

I was gonna say this on a thread the other day, but in a much meaner way. So, thanks!

Sorry for having standards 'n' shit. It doesn't even have to be old Hollywood. It just needs to be cohesive, imo. What the fuck does driving around in an abandoned car park throwing food and beverages at a police car driven by Jack Nicholson's grandson have to do with any of the lyrics in Bartender? How does it make sense? You could pair it with any song of hers and it wouldn't make a difference, because it's generic af.

To expand upon this ... she also could've done so much more with NFR and HIAB. HIAB mentions so many places it could've taken place. For example, this is literally that Black Rabbit place, and they have a magic show and all this shit. The possibilities! And instead she filmed it on the side of a highway in some urban bushland And NFR ... I feel like there was a real opportunity there to have a Norman Rockwell character somewhere in it ... like a really overconfident fuckboy. And instead she pretends to play the piano, walks outside, sits in a hammock and beside the pool, all the while wearing glasses with atrocious CGI. You know, I get that she didn't want to go high budget or whatever ... but it didn't need to be. IMO, it just isn't interesting and that's a real shame. She hasn't always made high budget productions but she's almost always produced interesting content ... until this era.

Agreed, but in terms of this era ... DT is the best simply because it has a story, unlike all of the others. Shades of Cool was amazing ... I didn't mind the MVs for Love and LFL, though. I definitely think they were better than this or the FIILY/TG one.

How so? If anyone thinks that Lana's connections and influence haven't greatly helped Chuck's career, they're kidding themselves. I'm sure even Chuck knows that. I didn't say that her work is without merit, and my original comment was clearly a joke (or maybe not clearly ...) @@LanaCharts I (a woman) am saying that a woman's success helped another woman's success. There are no men in the equation at all, so where's the misogyny, bro? I'm waiting.

I'll estimate her however I please. She wouldn't get most of the jobs she gets if it wasn't for her sister and that's that on that. If you want to disagree with someone that's fine, but too often you seem to post solely with the intention of trying to shut down what someone else is saying, whilst offering no counter-argument. It's boring.
-
I respect this opinion but I honestly don't think she thinks about it too deeply. That doesn't mean that the viewer can't draw their own conclusions, just that I really think it's ... well, mish-mash. "Having fun with her friends". And keeping her sister employed. I mean she knows that her fans read everything into everything so she probably thinks she can put up whatever and people will like it for that reason. I think she has done something similar with her lyrics on NFR, but that's another discussion.
-
Honestly, I think she does shit like this to keep Chuckles employed. It's just irritating when you stop and think about what she could have done. I felt the same way about MAC and VB. Especially VB because she had 9 minutes to play with and there was so much time/potential to tell a story. MVs don't have to be high budget for me to like them, but they do have to tell a story/show progression. This is just a mish-mash of random shenanigans, and that's my issue with it. I don't feel that it does any of these songs justice. I don't want to associate terrible pool-dwelling jellyfish with NFR, or taco throwing with Bartender, so I won't watch again. For me, DT was the best MV from this era because it actually told a story. FIILY/TG was high budget mish-mash, and this is low budget mish-mash.
