I don't think there's anything more important about a Lana era than the music itself, period. But seriously, works of art shouldn't have to be explained by their artists on stage or something. Art is meant to be studied and through that the meaning will be revealed. That's what is so interesting about almost every form of art whether it's literature, music, or visual. It'd be boring if she explained everything perfectly. Where would be the mystique, the star power, or the elusiveness that makes Lana what she is? You completely don't understand who and what she is as an artist and it makes me feel like you're mentally lazy for wanting her to spell everything out for you so you can "get" it. That's what makes me think you're just not going to last as a fan of hers. Might as well give it up now.
And I'm not saying I WANT her to release the album and vanish. But I'm merely saying she completely has the option to, just like any other artist. She isn't our barbie doll to play dress up with and to make dance and sing whenever we want to. Leave that for someone like Katy Perry who willingly puts herself in that kind of position. But the option to release something and not have to shove it into people's faces through performances and interviews IS a legitimate way to do things. Look at Prince, Kate Bush, Bjork, David Bowie... None of them feel the need to do all that. It'd be perfectly fine if they did, but they don't. I just don't understand why you have to keep pushing so hard for her to do anything other than make music. She's said before that that's what she enjoys doing: writing and making the music itself.
If you are just so fed up with the way Lana does things then I suggest you give up on her. Artists generally become even more reclusive with age, so BTD may have been the most outgoing Lana you'll ever get. Enjoy the MUSIC!!!

Your argument doesn't make much sense to me. Not being able to enjoy a song without it being performed live is kind of ridiculous. There are many artists out there that only release their music without going on as many TV shows as possible or even touring. Except Lana still does tour, so you have live versions of the songs lol. It doesn't reflect how much an artist cares about their music when they don't "promote" it. You're all stuck in stan world/shallow logic. I'm not saying you aren't real fans, but you obviously just said you can't enjoy her music or artistry without some type of promo. Speaks for itself.
Just because Lana isn't playing every instrument on her records doesn't mean she isn't a musician. Writing good melodies, lyrics, and singing all take incredible talent. So yes, enjoy the music.

It's absurd to expect a musician to do anything other than make music. Period. Thing is, Lana still does so much more than that, but you all expect her to whore herself out on every TV show for "promo" so her album/single can reach maybe a position or two higher on the charts. None of that matters. Enjoy the music.
I could totally see Lana becoming more of a private person and even a shut in later in her career. Maybe she will have weeded out all the whiny and shallow fans by then.
Ok but most of these people are whining about nothing. It's perfectly fine to go against their opinions too. If you can't defend your opinion then you might not want to express it.

Sorry to derail the thread further, but I thought this specific post needed more of a response. I don't think you can ask, "what does this or that *specific* excerpt mean", without considering the overall meaning of the song. Once that's done, the excerpt can either fit or not. I, for one, don't find this too difficult. Her songs are pretty literal as you imply (with the exception of the sarcastic ones like National Anthem). Therefore, it's perplexing to many of us why you think aspects of her live performance or footnotes to her life given at a concert are needed to fix what is ultimately a *subjective* interpretation anyway. She even sings about this a little in "Brooklyn Baby". So ... This Is What Makes Us Girls" A highly sympathetic bimbo anthem. She both identifies with them (because of her physical nature and shared experiences) and paints a picture of their tragic nature: "We all look for heaven and we put our love first Somethin' that we'd die for, it's our curse" I said in another post somewhere that the lyrics in this song (and in National Anthem) seem about as good as Dylan's. "Video Games" http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/8726-the-top-100-tracks-of-2011/9/ I like what these guys say, which is different from LDR's (stated) intention, though the Quietus article @@RiverPhoenix cites has her being consistent with what they say. I think she said that she intended to portray a happier, simpler time with the song, to hammer the point that the same song can have different meanings to different people. Actually, I think I can hold this belief without her holding it. "Off To The Races" or a whirlwind romance. The lyrics are literal but they exist for her to sing brilliantly at rap-like speeds. There has to be enough words and description to do this, and it's not all just physical description, but characters and feelings, and some consider it a pastiche of Nabokov, too. All in all an unambitious song (ultrasarcasm, in case you missed it). "Body Electric" It wouldn't surprise me if the initial lyrics are there to include Elvis, Marilyn, and Jesus in a video (holding back John Wayne as a surprise). However, all three are also relevant to the overall theme of the song as I see it. The song reminds me of Making Out (her country-like song about a defiant, charismatic, nymphomaniac), only this one is very dark, so here it's like the hedonism is a kind of "possession" and a religious conflict follows from that. There is also a fair amount of fatalism (the only thing that's going to "stay young" is the photographs, the only thing that still remains is the stench on clothes, so are these all just memories in her head from a more aged time?). So my rebuttal is basically this: if I can make these interpretations of her songs, why can't you? Or are you just testing us? Criticize her all you like about not being the best live performer, but she is an honest performer. -

None of that has anything to do with music.
So basically because she wore t shirts and jeans Ultraviolence "failed." Incredible logic.
