Ocean is not streaming friendly at all. Too many long songs. Still waiting for Spotify to change how they count plays because right now it’s ruining the industry by encouraging shorter and shorter songs. YouTube does it very well with watch times and pay creators based on engagement. That alone curbs clickbait short videos and encourage more meaningful content. Spotify has no system like that. The pay rate is flat based on play counts disregarding length.

I’m pretty sure that was part of the campaign. People asking about the campaign. The roll out campaign has been on going since Water Color Eyes. Don’t forget Westworld incorporation. Video Games was covered and played on that show. The only thing I’m kinda meh about is the weak Spotify playlisting. The album is not very streaming friendly or radio friendly. It’s definitely harder to make a deal with Spotify because of that. Her team is cheating their way through it a bit though. The 3 promo singles are spread apart perfectly leading to release. It gives her New Music Friday exposure every month. They didn’t even pay for placement I bet you until Candy Necklace. They are being cheap regarding Spotify. The Tuesday releases were strategic to get high Spotify NMF placement on Friday. Spotify is editorial based but also algorithmically based. A&W would not be high on NMF had it been released on a regular Friday. I don’t think the Spotify team would believe a 7 minutes song would do well to be placed high but the Tuesday numbers proved them wrong. It got playlisted well on Friday. The Tuesday releases benefit her more Spotify definitely not on the official charts, but I think they care more about the album than the singles. All of this wouldn’t be necessary if her team just straight up pay Spotify but they don’t.

Metacritic their job is to add reviews. It’s not the critics job. Don’t bother people unnecessarily idk why this had to be said . If you want reviews to be added, just email the metacrtic team. It has nothing to do with reviewers. Also Metacritic assigns scores to unscored reviews themselves. The reviewers don’t send them scores. Tends to be on the lower side too unless they get confirmation from the critic. One review of UV was changed from 80 to 90 after the reviewer confirmed it was a 90 on twitter. Meta initially scored it as an 80 review.

She’s just be saying sh*te all the time. Like she recently said in an interview how BTD is full of pop bangers . BTD demos were way more pop than the final album for example. Dark Paradise was literally an up tempo song. National Anthem was top 40 ready. Emile slowed a lot the songs down and made it way less pop. She also sang lower. Born To Die was not full of pop bangers. Don’t know what kind of pop music Lana has been listening to . Video Games being a hit shift the whole album to be down tempo. Born To Die is just very polished and has very high production value. I think one the of the main reasons why BTD was so successful and accessible because most of the songs were written as uptempo pop songs originally but reworked to add an edge to it. That kind of juxtaposition is kinda of missing in Lana recent work tbh (well until this album esp with A&W). Just because the lyrics are personal/introspective doesn’t mean the song itself has to be acoustic and slow. Also uptempos can be sad songs too. Back on topic, BB and Chemtrails had a lot of promo. The music simply didn’t click.

Updated rankings: 1. A&W 2. Paris, Texas 3. Fishtail 4. Peppers 5. Candy Necklace 6. Taco Truck (alone) 7. Taco Truck x VB 8. Jon Batiste Interlude 9. Grandfather 10. Sweet 11. Kintsugi 12. The Grants 13. Ocean Blvd 14. Let The Light In 15. Margaret 16. Judah Smith Interlude 17. Fingertips I tried so many times to get into Fingertips, but it’s just not possible. I’d rather listen to the pastor interlude which is way more pleasant imo .

Taco Truck would be such a hit clocking at just 2 minutes. She sang with an easy to grasp melody and punchy voice and lyrics. The whole song is very mainstream with crisp vocals that can played on the radio. Taco Truck x VB works for me on the album, even though I stopped at the VB part most of the time. It just embodied the whole album. Two songs mixed genre and self sample. That is THE album. The VB part works as an outro for me. Listening to it alone tho is a frustrating experience because the first part is too good I fear. The other part felt unnecessary.

Ok but the pre-release singles all flopped. Doin Time (the hit) was averaging 500k per day same as A&W. I mean I’m kinda repeating myself here, but COCC and BB weren’t promoted either. COCC and BB singles all rose to their respective debuts or higher on release day that usually happens with an album release. In case of Norman, on release day the songs did better than they were first out. No songs cleared more than a million before the album came out (didn’t chart on the global chart either) but title track did 2.1 million debut at #21 in the US on release day. Multiple album tracks charted. Mind you, this was in 2019. She would have cleared 30 million now. A&W can’t even match its 2.5 million debut. I don’t know something is just not right. No songs above 2 million when Ocean debuted higher.

She’s not touching 100K with those numbers. NFR (song) did 2.1 million in 2019 on release day when Spotify had 50% less users. Spotify users have more than doubled and Lana has been gaining tons of streams recently. The highest track on the album in 2023 did less than 2 million. That’s a huge bomb. Keep in mind, NFR singles didn’t chart and did very poorly. But when the album came out, we saw big jump in numbers. I was expecting 3 million plus for the best performing songs. All of the singles charted and did very well before the album, I was expecting a big jump like her previous releases. A&W did 2.5 million. Release day should be over 3 million for that song alone. Something is seriously not right. Even COCC and BB had increases when the release day came.

Flopped on streaming . As expected with multiple unlistenable 6 minute songs stuck together on top of full songs length unlistenable interludes. We need another version of the album without Kawasaki, Fingerclit, and those interludes ASAP. INTERSCOPE do your job. The album would smash without those songs. Ocean Blvd (lite edition). It’s literally so easy to make an ep without those songs quickly and just release it digitally.
