Poison Ivy 1,588 Posted February 28, 2013 Gaga is iconic. She isn't searching for attention. EVERYTHING she does has a meaning! Now let's stop arguing because it will lead us nowhere. Come on, you can't possibly believe that
rways 405 Posted March 1, 2013 Come on, you can't possibly believe that I meant with the very "Provocative" things, like the meat dress. I don't think she going down to the grocery store has meaning.
rways 405 Posted March 1, 2013 To be fair neither of them are Iconic. I mean Adele is 24 and Gaga 26 (?). I think to call someone Iconic in the beggining of their careers is nonsense. Lets all make a reunion in 30 years and see what happened. Madonna is iconic, Elvis, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Stvevie Wonder, Audrey Hepburn. Old folks some are dead some over their 50's and rocking all over. An Icon goes through generations I guess. Adele is not just amazing vocallyn speaking. She is visceral, she makes you feel her emotion. That is a rare gift. Adele is a raw and rare talent. Not iconic I think but a extraordinary talent with great potencial to be iconic. Adele has a huge fan base. Her fan base goes from kids to grandparents. They are music fans obsssessed with her music not her dresses, her hair style. They like her and her songs. That is what music is about right? Pop music is for the show is different. Is like saying Aretha Franklin or Etta James are less iconic than Madonna. Both are important Icons for different reasons. My grandparents listen to Aretha, my parents do and I do. My kids also will. That is Adele's future if she continues the same path. Gaga has to eat a lot of grass to one day be fairly compared to Madonna. Time will tell. Gaga is a good performer, with a few catchy songs, good pianist, with some vocal abilities. I am not a Gaga fan but I give her 2 good qualities: 1) She understands music. Her music doesn't speak to me but is refreshing to see someone that at least is a musician. I like Rihanna's music better (shit person hot music tbh) but she doesn't have half of Gaga's music knowledge. IMO Ke$ha and Pink have better songs of them all but that is just me. 2) Gaga is not lazy. Her performances make me laugh tbh but if you like her I give you that she really works hard on her presentations. Tours a lot and is not lazy tour with half acts. Always brings her complete act even to small cities. She is a bitch but at least is a hard working bitch that doesn't make your ears bleed when she plays the piano. PS: Gaga is not surching for attention?? Tbh i agree with you. I love Gaga and i would love her to keep on being amazing. I hope she will still be slaying in 30 years.

elllipsis 1,441 Posted July 8, 2013 I don't if this has been mentioned / discussed elsewhere, and I do know it's kinda speculative, but bear with me... Blanche Dubois. You know, of 'A Streetcar Named Desire'? I've recently re-watched the film and it got me thinking. From Wikipedia - "(...) the former Southern belle has a lurid past (a marriage to a young homosexual who committed suicide when she discovered his secret; notorious sexual promiscuity; ongoing alcoholism, etc.) as well as genuine spiritual idealism and refinement." Also her attraction to violent and "wrong" men / abusive relationships, the tragic death of her first love (albeit in very different circumstances), her insecurity and absolute need to be adored by everyone (especially men), and last but not least Blanche's iconic quote "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers", which Lana could be referencing in the Ride monologue as well as in Kinda Outta Luck and Carmen. Carmen in particular sounds like it could have been at least partly inspired by her or a Blanche-like character --- Darling, darling, doesn't have a problem / Lying to herself cause her liquor's top shelf / It's alarming honestly how charming she can be / Fooling everyone, telling how she's having fun (...) Baby's all dressed up, with nowhere to go / That's the little story of the girl you know / Relying on the kindness of strangers / Tying cherry knots, smiling, doing party favours / Put your red dress on, put your lipstick on --- not to mention the little French interlude. At the very least she's maybe a character Lana somewhat relates to / feels inspired by? I don't know, maybe it's too much of a stretch, but what do you guys think?

When I studied A Streetcar Named Desire in English, I noticed the 'kindness of strangers' part too and it reminded me of Lana. I do think her and Blanche have quite a bit in common cause they both have the sketchy-mystery-past and speak poetically, although Lana still has her marbles. I imagine Lana really liking her as a character for some reason.

Kindness of Strangers I loved someone once and the person I loved I lost http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGttPdMEBOo It's one of my favourites as well. Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando are absolutely fantastic in it! The quote was obviously what caught my attention, but it was all the other similarities that really made me wonder... And then Carmen and that French interlude... But I dunno, maybe I'm just imagining things. And OMG I'm definitely not, I just have way too much time on my hands.
Summersault 824 Posted July 10, 2013 I always got a Natural Born Killers vibe from a lot of her stuff. I don't remember if she ever mentioned the movie, so it might be speculation, but I think she has seen and loved it. Like the way the movie uses lots of unrelated vintage clips to set a mood is similar to how Lana does it in her videos. That whole Ride-or-die, American sweetheart turned crazy with lots of bad wigs-kinda style that Mallory Knox has going on reminds a lot of Lana too.

Lirazel 700 Posted February 18, 2014 I think that the the tying cherry knots part in Carmen can be another reference to Twin Peaks (the first one is Her mind's like a diamond) - Audrey Horne does the trick in order to get hired in exclusive brothel in order to push the investigation forward. It works extremely well. 1 Quote i am nothing and should be everything
