Ultraviolence

Recommended Posts

As the man's name in this song is Jim, I think that this song is also a direct reference to the doomed lovers trapped in an abusive relationship in Lou Reed's 'Berlin' album. She did mention Lou Reed in Brooklyn Baby

Hmm, this is interesting. Reed's doomed lovers were named Jim and Caroline.

In the spotlight we see Jim and Chuck... (Motel 6)

Stalking you has sorta become like my occupation.

I was surprised but i think this is definitely right...

We can go back to Woodstock
Where they don't know who we are

(in the live version I really thought it was "we could go back to the start!" which i liked.)

Like as stupid as it sounds its prob lemonade. Lana's references lemonade in like 5 other songs

Yeah it sounds weird. But I guess golden tears ARE like lemonade. Bittersweet and a mixture of gold and water, right? Lol

He used to call me D.N.,
that stood for Deadly Nightshade.
'Cause I was filled with poison,
but blessed with beauty and rage.
Jim told me that.

He hit me and it felt like a kiss.
Jim brought me back.
Reminded me of when we were kids.

With his ultraviolence.
Ultraviolence.
Ultraviolence.
Ultraviolence.

I can hear the sirens, sirens.
He hit me and it felt like a kiss.
I can hear the violence, violence.
Give me all of that ultraviolence.

He used to call me poison,
like I was poison ivy.
I could have died right then,
'cause he was right beside me.

Jim raised me up,
he hurt me but it felt like true love.
Jim taught me that loving him was never enough.

With his ultraviolence.
Ultraviolence.
Ultraviolence.
Ultraviolence.

I can hear the sirens, sirens.
He hit me and it felt like a kiss.
I can hear the violence, violence.
Give me all of that ultraviolence.

We can go back to New York,
loving you is really hard.
We can go back to Woodstock,
where they don't know who we are.

Heaven is on Earth,
I would do anything for you, babe.
Blessed is this union.
Crying tears of gold like lemonade.

I love you the first time,
I love you the last time.
Yo soy la princesa,
comprende mis white lines.
'Cause I'm your jazz singer,
and you're my cult leader.
I love you forever,
I love you forever.

With his ultraviolence.
Ultraviolence.
Ultraviolence.
Ultraviolence.

I can hear the sirens, sirens.
He hit me and it felt like a kiss.
I can hear the violence, violence.
Give me all of that ultraviolence.

Also, the weird vocals during the final chorus sound like "lay me down tonight, in my linen and curls". Anyone else hear that??

yes, i do! i like it, it's a nice, subtle reference to Fucked My Way Up To The Top

It's "comprende these late nights" because the copy of the album I downloaded has the official lyrics with it

[02:46.17]We can go back to town
[02:51.12]Heaven don’t know who we are

[03:03.81]Guess it is meant to be
[03:07.91]Crying tears of gold, like Adam and Eve

[03:17.00]Yo soy la princesa, comprende these late nights

So here is my theory on who Jim is..

Based on her Fader interview, she had an affair with the head of her label for seven years.

http://www.thefader.com/2014/06/04/lana-del-rey-cover-interview/

Jimmy Iovine was the head and co-founder of Interscope. He was there until like a month or two ago, so just about the entire time Lana was making music.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Iovine

He is also mentioned in the "Thank Yous" for the album. Perhaps for the inspiration?

http://lanaboards.com/index.php?/topic/4806-ultraviolence-post-release-thread-poll/page-15

(Scroll near the bottom and someone posted to the thank-yous from the booklet)

This works because

  • It fits in the timeline
  • It explains why she is attracted to rich, older men
  • They can't be together because he got married, and in the present it would look suspicious
  • But that didn't stop them because she talks about being the other woman a lot

The only thing I don't understand is how she would have found him all those years ago when she wasn't known. And how that connection wouldn't have made her famous sooner. The scenarios she sings about also sound like they are with a younger guy. I don't know but this, in my opinion, sounds like the most plausible "Jim".
