Album Trailer Featuring "Shades of Cool," "Ultraviolence," and "Brooklyn Baby" Snippets

You gotta give more thorough examples. You always talk about National Anthem as a "social critique" but you never actually explain how it is...

The part were I said Obama does more TV Celeb Shows then speeches from the White House didn't give you a clue? :hooker:  well it's quite simple in my mind and was actually a topic of discussion back in the day in LDR BRA.  Obama has a twitter, goes on Celeb shows, invites celebs to official events. Oprah was responsible for 10% of his votes. The power of information are changing and with that the power of WHO can elect you also changes. A celeb today can influence your habits a lot more then just the clothes you buy, the perfume you use or the cream you want.

When you have 20 million followers in your twitter you have 20 million of instant listeners. Why Beysus the one so close to the president is so behaved? Do you think was by chance she was the one to (lip) sing the anthem? How many followers Beysus have? how many she gain after that?

National Anthem is a representation of US society and Politics as it is today. The fact JFK and MM was used is a way to remember you how it could have been or how it was. Look at A$AP behavior on the video, look how pretty yet a empty vassel he's character is. Look at Lana and those multiracial kids, her classy clothes, her "mascara" in contrast with her cheap ghetto behavior.

Look at A$ap and his grill and chains. Is Show Business getting into politics, is the new society. The celebrity couple is the president and the first lady. Yet neither knows much.

Celebs always had influence but never this instantaneous, this powerful and this much. Just look at how many followers the presenter of the National News on BBC and CNN have and you will see  and compare them to any major pop singer. Wanting or not the celeb you follow is indeed one way you get informed. This is obviously talking about US.

Being nostalgic for a time you never lived in is such a white person thing  :toofunny:  :toofunny:  :toofunny:

In Brazil has even a term and is called "saudosismo" that translated a lot into music and cinema. The movement was very strong in Salvador (the most African part of Brazil) and is very present in samba do adeus (adeus = goodbye) so is quite a black mamma africa kind of feeling lol

Honestly... I think you've put WAY more thought into this than Lana ever did.  :toofunny:

I think there are a lot of intelligent people on the forum that assign too much meaning to Lana's work and give her too much credit. Liking pretty things and being subversive is basically the whole of her artistry.

Maybe. You, we, I, hahahaa will never really know....

It's just quite obvious to me from the moment I saw the video tho. Wasn't even too much thought. But one thing is for sure: whatever I say and didn't came from her own mouth is obviously assumption.

So .. they actually recorded a lot more scenes, like the one in the room with the boys, her being  at the beach at night and her sitting around in the smoke while waring the red dress?
And then they just chose to make the West Coast Video to consist of a few beach and one million daddy-in-the-car scenes with a few "red dress"-parts? :derpna2:

Although I'm more into her darker tracks, I really like Brooklyn Baby, despite it being  a very sugary song as it seems. It fits the name of the song and seems to have a great atmosphere, And maybe the lyrics won't be so sugary in the full version, you know like she's the sweet brooklyn baby and then something really bad happens, while she continues to sing in this sweet-girly way. I would realyl like to see that happen.

Just do it. Just do it - don't wait!

If I would have felt this way about an artist I would never listen to it, and surely I wouldn't moderate a forum about that artist. :toofunny:  I mean.. you are serious?! You are saying basically  that her work is shit and she's lacking any real artistry. Can you be honest and make an estimation of how many ours you listened to her "superficial" songs?  :creep:

I don't equate "liking pretty things and being subversive" to "lacking any real artistry" and "her work [being] shit", but apparently you do. Please refrain from putting words in my mouth.

The aforementioned characteristics of her work are why I like her. You don't actually think I choose to moderate a forum for an artist whose work I have little respect for? Christ.

I think what he says is that Lana is not the kind of singer who deals alot with social critisicm. She sings about the topics she likes, as love, tragedy or sometimes, she's just describing a situation or feeling.

I would never say that I do not consider lyrics important for songs and I think  there still are very good songs about social aspects in our time. But I do not think of Lana as such a singer, since .. well, she's just not the person for this. not because her work is bad or because she's stupid. But she has described the influences for her lyrics often, and social criticism isn't one of them i guess.

Well, I guess when you truly believe her lyrics haven't worsen you must be in denial.. I just feel like she doesn't show as much variety any more, her lyrics have become really really simple instead of clever ryhming. She always talks about painting pictures with words, but they're not as vivid as they used to be. But don't wanna complain, I don't know but it's just that common phenomenon of your fave band/singer's first album, they just never go back.

In loving memory of lines like.. "Feet don't fail me now, take me to the finish line", "He loves me with every beat of his cocaine heart", "I stayed up waitin', anticipatin' and pacin', but he was chasiing paper..", "They say that the world was built for two", "Let's take Jesus of the dashboard, got enough on his mind", "Excessive buyin, overdosin', dyin' on our drugs and our love and our dreams and our rage..", "Tell em when you find true love it lives on", "Merican dreams came true somehow, swore I'd chase until I was dead", "Darlin, darlin, doesn't have a problem, lying to herself 'cause her liquors top shelf", "You look like a million dollar man, so why is my heart broke?", "Got my bad baby by my heavenly side, i Know if I go, I'll die happy tonight", "Ribbons in our hair and our eyes gleamed mean, a freshmen generation of degenerate beauty queens", "Gold and silver line my heart, but burned into my brain are these stolen images", "Just you and me feelin the heat even when the sun goes down", "I tried so hard to act nice like a lady, you taught me it was good to be crazy" AND MANY MORE

The song most likely will be about how she's a Brooklyn Baby and how she loves her man.

Maybe some references to her early pre-success years.

But imagine how awesome it would be if this wouldn't just be another autobiographic song but a story-telling one.

She builds up the atmosphere and setting in the first verse, she's a sweet girl living in Brooklyn, singing in a band with her boyfriend being the guitarist. Feel the Chet Baker vibes.

But then, they get envolved with the downtown crime-scene. Imagine how it would send chills up our spine while we listen to her, singing in her sweetheart voice about how her best friends becomes a drug addict and dies of an overdose, her boyfriend being shot by a cop while robbing a bank and she herself being raped by a band colleague. At the end of the song she wanders the streets of Brooklyn as a wasted girl.~ I'm a Brooklyn Baaaaby ~  We all would be left half terrified half enchanted at the end of the song.

I don't think this is going to happen, but I would really like to hear a song like this from her, you know "Girl With One Eye"-style.

Just do it. Just do it - don't wait!

No offence intended, but in my interpretation liking pretty things = shallow attitude = lacking depth and real artistry. Maybe the subversive part merits some consideration (she certainly trolls some feminist groups with her lyrics) but I think that some of the Lana fans just didn't understand their attraction towards her and become widely contradictory about her work. Most of the people with a higher intellectual self-appreciation just cannot flat out stan for her work, YB is a good example for that, the song nails the deepest anguish of any lover "Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful" but how can you acknowledge something that is emotionally true but rationally you are just too embarrassed to admit it publicly that you felt that way. (It's another discussion why are you embarrassed by it)

I heard a good one from a dude: that Lana's songs have the same effect as porn to him (he is addicted to it but..what's the sense to talk about artistry when your comparison is porn)

BTW I dissociate some of her stupid explanations made in interviews from the actual lyrical interpretation

The lyrics to Born To Die that some people here praise now, were being dragged in the mud as cliches by American journalists and bloggers in 2012. No matter what Lana does there are always people bashing it. I feel that the the most of the slander has left the media, who now seem to like her a lot more, and moved to fansites like this.

Ok so I haven't really been a member of this site for too long but I think it's fair to say that this is the exact same reaction you had to the paradise snippets, right?

"Like an American, oh ooh oh oh oh oh ooh oh oooh, like an American"

:wtf:

"My pussy tastes like pepsi cola, my eyes are wide like cherry pies"

:wtfney:

" I sing the body electric, I'm on fire sing that body electric"

:wtf2:

"I was an angel, looking to get fucked hard... Fuck yeah, give it to me"

:sadcore6:

I don't know... Bel Air and Yayo are pretty flawless lyrically so I'll stop there. My point being the chorus usually sounds pretty dumb and repetitive on it's own, for any respectable singer. Maybe this won't change your mind but if you do hate uv in it's entirety well then, ok, see ya'!

But please, if you do dislike it, then just don't talk about it here, or at the very least constructive critisism only, I don't want each thread filled with ex-fans saying "ughh I hate Lana now, her lyrics aren't insightful and her production isn't "whimsical" enough"

That being said I will agree Lana has definitly made an odd evolution as an artist, most likely because she's listening to much to the critics and trying to impress them rather than her fans. If this era produces music you'd rather not listen to then I'd understand your dissapointment but it just seems selfish to try to bum the rest of us out when we're getting all hyped and trying to diminish our opinions by saying "no your wrong, this is shit"

M'kay? ... M'kay then.

A) I haven't seen anyone in this thread saying that someone's opinion is WRONG.

B) I don't know, it strikes me as kind of selfish when you try to dictate an already on-topic conversation on a forum because you don't like what's being said.

I like the majority of the posts about LDR's lyrical merit (pro and con) here, so I wouldn't call it slander if somebody doesn't like her lyrical direction. People just have different agendas for what LDR's "success" as an artist should mean. I agree that when BTD came out, there were lots saying her lyrics were really bad. Prior to that point I was lyric-deaf (concentrated on music). When I started comparing her lyrics to others, I couldn't comprehend the criticism.

Brooklyn Baby was written with Barrie? Was that confirmed (I mean I saw it on Lanaboard's twitter)? If so it's the most interesting thing about the song. I like it because she's not repeating herself, so UV is shaping up to be less predictable than BTD. Unless we know the agenda for the song, we can't really evaluate the lyrics. For instance, I'm thinking it might be self-parody (e.g., like Dum Dum) in which case the lyrics could be appropriate. I would also love to see her do a Lou Reed cover (preferably one of those songs he sings where he doesn't really sing, but you have to infer a melody he could be singing; hopefully, she'll provide the melody).

Is LDR exposing her strongest stuff first with the previews, or holding the strongest stuff back for the full release? Again the answer will depend on what my conception of a cool kind of success would be for her as an artist.

Well looking over you're certainly right you haven't called anyone wrong[i/] and perhaps I did get a little bossy, mainly just cause I'm a stan trying to defend my fave from a "hater" (or in this case someone with slightly negative opinions about them) but I mean if you don't like it, for the sake of those who are[i/] excited, you could try toning it down slightly if you wanted to. Even if you haven't enjoyed some of the new material so far. Not telling you what to do, your opinion is is your opinion. I'm not trying to get into a fight or anything but tell me. Do you really dislike all the tracks so far. Ultraviolence, Shades Of Cool, Brooklyn Baby, West Coast?

Cause so far the only example you've given is Brooklyn Baby.

Just a genuine question.

Edit: messed up the italics, :hillary:

TBH, I like all the tracks we've heard so far. :creep:

I love the production and tempo changes of West Coast and Shades of Cool, and the psychedelic guitar accompanied by her ad-libbing/wailing on the latter is one of my favourite parts of any Lana song, ever.

Ultraviolence (the title track, I mean) strikes me as one of those hypnotic songs and the spoken bridge is sexy, sexy, sexy. And finally, I don't hate Brooklyn Baby... to me, its just unremarkable, but I mean, we've heard like a teeny tiny bit of it so the capacity for it to grow on me is still there. It does have a good vibe/mood to it, I have to say, so I do kinda like it.

I'm very happy with Dan as a producer and I feel like Lana is finally making the music I wanted her to make, that I didn't know I wanted, if that makes any sense? haha :3

I like the aesthetic this era, from the grunge-inspired look to the black and white of promo videos and artwork. I'm hopeful that Lana can get the critics in her favour, because I think it would really increase her confidence and it would mean a lot to her. I'm excited for her and I'm excited for us, as a fanbase!
