I really wish recording dates were by standard listed in official song credit linear notes, I love knowing the timeline of how albums came to be Honeymoon is a complete mystery too, we don’t know anything about when the final versions for that album were recorded besides sometime from mid 2014 to mid 2015

It’s also worth noting that Black Beauty could’ve been re-worked in early 2014 as well. Dan said that Interscope refused to release Ultraviolence unless Lana worked with “Adele’s producer” (Greg Kurstin and Paul are the only collaborators on the album who have also worked with Adele, and we know MPG is pretty old), but when Adele’s producer got to the meeting and heard the demos of the Dan Auerbach songs, he said they were great and he wouldn’t change a thing. So possibly around that time, he was given Black Beauty to re-work anyway because he said he didn’t want to change anything about the songs Dan had done?

A while back I saw a picture of Lana recording in NightBird that was captioned “Lana recording Flipside and UFB in June 2013” so I just assumed that was confirmed somewhere by NightBird as well considering NightBird confirmed UFB being from June 2013. Although Eclipse did mention recently that a Flipside demo exists and is really good, so maybe it’s another Black Beauty/Sad Girl situation and the vocal track was recorded then as a different version of the song, and then reworked later as well?

It’s really interesting to me because whatever the album originally was had so many different sounds recorded so close together. Flipside was recorded in June 2013 during the same session as Unidentified Flying Bill, like what 😭😭 and the version of Money Power Glory that’s on the album was untouched after the day it was recorded and is actually probably a year or so older than the Dan Auerbach version that leaked as a “demo”. so the sonic world of the UV that we know was definitely still there for a while before Lana and Dan started tracking at Easy Eye, but so were a lot of other sounds too. i’m really curious what the album sounded like when she thought it was done at the end of 2013 lmfao, i feel like it was lowkey kind of a mess

we know that Cruel World wasn’t written until at least December 2013-January 2014 in the same session as when PWYC and Guns and Roses were recorded at Electric Lady, and then it was recorded with Dan at the beginning of 2014, so that song is actually probably one of the only ones on the album that never existed in much of a different form before the Auerbach sessions. although I am curious if there’s a demo out there from the Electric Lady sessions

it’s really funny to me how when you take away Fiona’s label issues, Ella and Fiona have had such similar career trajectories. First album released as a (mouthy—to a fault) teenager, highly critically acclaimed. comes back a few years later with something even better that’s immediately considered a modern cult classic to even more praise, even though it doesn’t do as well commercially as the first album. retreats from the public eye for a while, and comes back with a 3rd album that doesn’t necessarily meet fan expectations or the standard they set for themselves with previous releases. which means that L3 is going to be her Idler Wheel yeah masterpiece incoming 😭😭😭

at first i didn’t think we were getting any MVs this era, i thought everything intended for the videos was lost with her hard drives. and then someone pointed out that it’s possibly a requirement of her record deal to release at least 3 music videos per era, which is very likely looking back at past album cycles (and explains why there are a few videos that just feel unnecessary lmaooo). and there are some weird requirements in the industry, i remember reading something a few months ago about how some promoters require musicians to play encores at their concerts otherwise they’re breaching the contract 😭 i have a feeling whatever videos we do get are going to be quite rough but i hope they’re rough in a Honeymoon MV/Ultraviolence MV way rather than a LMLYLAW MV way

i think the thing is that it is her weakest project by far, it wouldn’t be that much of a problem if a mediocre pop girl released it but we know she can do better, she’s proved that. it’s not a 100% bad album but it’s just very disappointing coming from her. i guess someone can say that it’s not fair to hold artists to the standard of their best work to date, but i do think that musicians, especially only 3 albums into their career, should be getting objectively better with each project or at least staying the same. maybe a very small drop in quality after an album as good as Melo is acceptable, but the HUGE drop in quality that happened from an album as good as Melo to SP i feel like is lowkey kinda unheard of in recent years in terms of my taste at least

after sky said this year that she’s not even done writing it, i have this sinking feeling that Downhill Lullaby, Innocent Kind, Descending, Guardian, I Pray for Rain, and All My Lovers Die are really the only cohesive songs for the album that she’s sitting on, which sucks. And Guardian + IPFR have already been cut anyway.
