Norman Fucking Rockwell - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll
GeminiLanaFan replied to Elle's topic in Post-Release Threads
To me, it might have been an accidental thing, that Norman painted through her stories a picture of the times in general. And yet, it does give it an interesting dimension, whether intentional or not. Because it’s another round of « we love NFR » vs « this album is overrated AF » -

All of her albums are about Americana indeed… but am I the only one that thinks it might not be as present anymore or maybe more subtle, since Chemtrails? -

On BTD, we also see a good picture of the times, where her relationships reflect many aspects of nowadays relationships. But not so much on UV or HM. LFL has those elements but they’re more in certain songs rather than sprinkled throughout the whole album. NFR was almost prophetic, with COVID embodied in both FIILY as « the rush », the « culture running though its own disaster »… ending with the greatest, which is « the death of the culture » like Jack and Lana said in interview. (Another brilliant aspect of this album is that, after the culture died on THE greatest, there’s almost a « restart » of the culture with simpler, piano-driven songs). anyways, I love NFR and I know it’s not your cup of tea, which I totally respect. All I wanted to bring up was that critics probably love it more than some of her other LPs is because we see a larger scope of the time we live in. -

I have a lot to add to that but have a few minutes, so here are a few of my observations: It’s not so much that she doesn’t tell her own story but through her story, we get a glimpse of the times we are living. It probably was unintentional but still, I see those elements in there: - title track: going out with a narcissistic man but she owns it: how many girls are living that, in the social media age? Same with the failed relationships depicted ln the album, although she wants her « love song ». - MAC, Hope, HIaB and all the songs where she references her own sadness: the younger generations are not afraid as much to acknowledge their sadness/ melancholy / sad feelings. - Doin Time is a 90s cover, a decade that inspires a lot this decade, culturally. - TNbAR is about creation, another trope that many of us are trying to explore, much more than passed generations. - There is still the hope of wanting to live in a better world, but that world is shattered in The Greatest, like you said. -

NFR, just like BTD, has this incredible feeling of « encapsulating the American culture » of this peculiar era, stepping a bit outside of Lana’s realm, into a larger scope, to tell the story of the decay of the US dream and American loneliness pre-pandemic. I guess it’s why it is still today considered her « best work » by critics. UV, HM and OB, although phenomenal, all lack that « time capture », concentrating on Lana’s story or getting into a certain vibe (although there are some « sprinkles » of postpandemic world in OB, it’s not as «present » as Norman or Born to Die, IMO). -
One thing is almost a certainty for me: Shiv won’t end up where she thinks she will.

Greg becoming ceo would kill the company for sure But it makes sense. I hope it’s not how it’s gonna end, but it’s make sense.

It’s gonna be a long summer, I fear, if rumours start flying so soon -

Bittersweet anthem was on a setlist sheet from yesterday’s show apparently. But it could be fake (anyone can do it on word and print it), or if real, it could simply be some sort of intro to another song. Or it could maybe possibly be an unreleased track that she considered performing live, but I seriously doubt that the more I think of it. -

I think it was a great set. lana will never be able to please everyone since she has so many songs already and so many won’t be played / sung very often live (too wordy, too slow…) when she sings live, I always look for the song she never sang live before and I’m almost never disappointed. Flipside being recognized : 🤯 also: a couple of tracks from OB… I’m shocked. -

Who is this guy? i won’t bet money on it, but if it ends up being true (big if), maybe it could be a new track for an unreleased collection? There is that Bittersweet Anthem song that was rumoured to be played last night (maybe it’s even the same song and Bittersweet Anthem is the « short title »?!?) Lol it does make sense -
I really love this show. I honestly don’t know how it’s going to end, who (if anyone) will get on top.

She really was good from what I’ve seen! i wonder if the « Bittersweet Anthem » song is real.. -
This new version is incredible. I already loved the OG version but this one has a replay potential the other didnt have. when she hummmn in the background And when the music almost stops when her verse begins The piano also brings a cute something more to the song But waking up to LB complaining again, Jesus…

Yeah, it’s what I was most afraid, that her unreleased would do better than her album tracks because, well, they surely are more « accessible » than many tracks on OB. which makes me believe that going the single routes rather than the LP could be the best of both worlds: the songs would get noticed (maybe even chart and be played on radio) without « harming » her album numbers or « crushing » them.

That’s what I also thought once Taylor announced it. there was also a Lana X pop/rock group rumour that went unnoticed because it was posted before OB and people assumed it was the Bleacher collab… Maybe the male rapper collab is MGK’s, after all these years (although is he still considered a rap singer since he went the punk-rock route?)
-
My take on what went on is this: Taylor wanted Lana on the album, Lana agreed, Lana didn’t think she’d be the only feature of the album so she did what Lana loves to do on a collab: let the other artist shine (see the long list of collabs where she is only back-vocaling). Taylor wanted Lana to do more but Lana didn’t think it would be necessary for the song and Taylor went with it because she was already grateful to have Lana in the first place. but who knows what happened in the end.
