    Charli XCX

So, I'm intrigued as to how everybody ranks her opening and closing tracks? She always has great opening and closing tracks on her albums/mixtapes... Here's my personal opinion (before you all slate me for putting Lipgloss last) 01. Dreamer (feat. Starrah and RAYE) 02. Nuclear Seasons 03. Pink Diamond 04. Sucker 05. Backseat (feat. Carly Rae Jepsen) 06. Next Level Charli 01. Visions 02. Track 10 03. Need Ur Luv 04. Lock You Up 05. 2099 (feat. Troye Sivan) 06. Lipgloss (feat. cupcakKe)

I guess you're right, I think the perfectionist in me just likes when an artist sticks to a pattern, like Katy has always had the title track as the opener. Same as Lana always alternates between track 1 and track 2 for each album.

This is how the tracklist is shaping up... I'm still not convinced that track 7 will be titled Smile? Usually her title tracks are number 1 on the album? But we'll see.

So... She said we'd still get the next album (presumably and hopefully the Janet album) as well as the SOPHIE project (unsure whether this an EP or whatever) this year... But if the next release fulfils her contract, is that still likely?

i imagine this is still gonna happen? like a deluxe version with new tracks and remixes or maybe a remixes ep? i just think with the blm movement, she's been prioritising other things, rather than promoting music etc. if anything i'm still loving the album so can wait a little longer for the enemy visuals and new songs! i wonder if the physical versions will be the standard album or the expanded edition

Purpose and Run Up are my favourites from the latest leaks. Would love more of the 2018 material though!

I wonder how many singles this era will see? And I wonder what the next singles will be... 01. Stupid Love 02. Rain On Me (with Ariana Grande) 03. Sour Candy (with BLACKPINK) - seems like the most logical choice as third single, it's a streaming force and has charted pretty well as a buzz single / album track. 04. Free Woman - seems popular among the fans and is accessible and one of the least "experimental" songs on the album. 05. Fun Tonight - seems like could be a hit in some form, seems the most GP friendly (following on from A Star Is Born). I'd like her to take more risks and maybe put out 911 or Babylon as singles, but this era seems to be an attempt to get as many hits as possible. She could always do visuals for these tracks though?

This will definitely be her 7th studio album, she announced her first poetry book / spoken word album 'Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass' and then she confirmed a second poetry book, 'Behind The Iron Gates' (unconfirmed if it will also be an spoken word album) in the same post as 'Chemtrails Over The Country Club', which she referred to as her new album.

I am completely behind the blackout on her web store at the moment and I think it's a great stance for somebody of her success - especially on release week. However, I really want to buy the cassette tapes, does anybody know how long the store lock will last or if the cassettes are available elsewhere?

I believe so, she also delayed the Enemy vertical video... I believe she was meant to drop that this week

    Instagram Updates

I mean, I'm glad she said something, something that at least proves she's thought about what's going on, rather than just posting some random screenshots with no captions. But damn, Lana. Starting this off with "I know lately a lot of people have been feeling like they can't say the right thing online, their words get all twisted up when all they're trying to do is help." I interpreted this as acknowledgement of her statement last week, and in that case, right now Lana, nobody cares. It's not about saying the right thing, it's about saying things the right way - that is what she fails to understand. Nobody (or very few) were outraged by her saying she's a delicate woman and wants to write songs like she used to... That's not what happened. People were upset at her calling out women of colour and fellow peers unnecessarily and writing about them in what could be (easily) interpreted as criticism. I don't know, I really try my best to see the good in people and support Lana, as a fan. I've been very vocal about her social media behaviour lately, and y'know what, this would have been a step in the right direction... We saw she went to a protest, great. She's acknowledged something that's happening outside of her world and reinforces my belief that she's not a racist. She's using her platform in a positive way. But that opening line really felt like a "before I begin, here's how I feel about last week, let's talk about me and my feelings before I address the real matter at hand." Like Lana, you don't want criticism, but you're a white (wealthy) woman addressing a very serious political issue about race, off the back of your own personal scandal in which people have accused of you of being racist and you want to begin your message with an indirect statement about how you feel right now... following your own, self inflicted backlash. THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU LANA, ME OR ANY WHITE PERSON. Maybe I'm alone in feeling this way, I just felt that acknowledgement of last weeks statement and what felt like some form of self pity was not needed and a little bit insensitive. Other than that, I'm pleased she said something and I think the rest of what she wrote was supportive and a good sentiment. She just needs somebody to proof-read man.

I've warmed up to this album, definitely not my favourite work of hers and I still feel underwhelmed, but it is nice uplifting background music. I rejigged the tracklist a bit, the interludes kinda make it a pain though... 01. Chromatica I 02. Alice 03. Sour Candy (with BLACKPINK) 04. Enigma 05. Replay 06. Chromatica II 07. 911 08. Plastic Doll 09. Rain On Me (with Ariana Grande) 10. Free Woman 11. 1000 Doves 12. Chromatica III 13. Sine From Above (with Elton John) 14. Fun Tonight 15. Stupid Love 16. Babylon

Yeah, that's a very good point actually, that I didn't consider. Obviously my original post was purely hypothetical and wasn't something I would want or expect from her now, just to be clear. It was purely thoughts about how she could have gone about this situation, if the racism incident hadn't of happened a week prior. Originally, I thought she'd be able to express her feelings and sentiment through a poem more clearly than a statement (as we've witnessed) and maybe that would have been better receieved, but you're right about it being misread as romanticizing. My bad.

Honestly, I feel like she took such a huge misstep and I don't know why. Throughout 2017 she was very vocal in terms of Trump and politics. It even impacted her music for the first time, in 2019 she was still present and aware, releasing Looking For America after the shootings and donating all the proceeds to charity. Even with the new poetry book, proceeds were being donated to a native American charity (I think)... In an ideal world, last week's statement would never have happened! And then if an event like George Floyd were to occur, she would've released a statement showing love, empathy and support to people of colour. Honestly I think she could've even done something like a poem (more Lana). She would still attend a protest, just not post videos of rioters! Maybe she could've done another Looking For America situation, or donated some money etc.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I do believe the original statement and the way she went about that was problematic - I still don't believe her intention was to be racist and I honestly still don't believe that Lana is a racist. She's very good friends with both The Weeknd and A$AP Rocky, her 2 backing dancers and best friends are both women of colour and in her original statement she said the women she listed were her friends. I do however disagree with the way she went about that whole situation and have made my opinions about that whole saga clear in a previous post. I think being labelled a racist a few days prior to such a traumatic event that is so heavily political and race based, is unfortunate on her account. Again, I'm not defending her, the statement was ignorant and she deserved the criticism she received, in my opinion. But having a platform like hers, she's expected to comment on events like the protests and the #blacklivesmatter movement that are happening right now. I honestly think, and again, just my thoughts... I think she remained silent as a show of respect, you know if she had of posted straight away about the incident she would have received major backlash following last leaks allegations of racism. Camila Cabello also receieved criticism on social media for posting about #blacklivesmatter (she was exposed for posting racist tweets (pre-fame) back in January). And yes, it was easier for her to remain silent, I can see that side and see how she could be seen as somebody who doesn't care etc. But, I do believe she remained silent in hopes of not adding fuel to the already burning fire, surrounding her priviledge and status. Of course, she couldn't stay silent forever, other peers calling her (and others) out for not speaking up and using their platforms - therefore she posted about it. Here it gets tricky, the way in which she posted did feel very, I have to do this etc. However, maybe it was for the best after all that she didn't write a statement, and she was potentially scared to, following on from last weeks events. She clearly went to a protest and was there, it's one thing posting on social media cos you have to, or your management want you to, or it's the right thing to do. But to actively go and protest, I think says more than you think. Again, it got problematic, she posted the video of people looting and didn't blur out their identity, even zooming in on some people - I genuinely don't think this was her trying to expose the looters or protestors (as she's been accused). I think this was a legitimate mistake and she has since removed the video after people pointed out her error. As for, what happens to Lana Del Rey now? I personally don't think this will effect her career as much as people think. Like I mentioned above Camila Cabello was exposed as a racist earlier this year and at the time, with cancel culture, it's easy to get caught up in the hyperbole of a situation. I do think her next record will probably decrease in terms of sales and acclaim, sales because she probably has lost fans due to her recent posts and behaviour (and that's her own doing). However, Norman Fucking Rockwell was well received as a coming of age, self reflection, looking outwards record. Clearly the new album is a return to her earlier style of songwriting, which as she pointed out, was heavily criticised and therefore I think recent events aside, the forthcoming album would have always been negatively received in comparison to Norman, especially as a follow up record. Whether or not the album is released this year, I don't know, I can't imagine them delaying it. But, I don't think her career is over, far from it to be honest.
