You guys saying "She's just starting it's too early to tell"

Jeff Buckley only ever released one album
He's considered the greatest folk singer that ever lived.

So far she has released albums that, in my opinion, will go on to receive classic status, but that wouldn't necessarily make her an icon. One thing that all icons hold in common is they all have a distinctive look and style and made a big impact to music (or whatever they specialised in) in their time that has lasted for decades. Lana has both of these things going for her (wether her impact shall last as long as other iconic musicians I cannot say) She also is controversial in the media for her views (or, ya' know, boredom) on topical issues. Yes, a lot of you may argue that her answers to questions regarding delicate issues have often been downright stupid, but overall in the way she acts and leads her life and how she portrays herself I think she's revolutionising feminism so that now many women don't feel like they have to live an entirely independent life to be considered smart, strong women and if they prefer a sexual dominance from their partner they won't be made to feel like "freaks" or "sluts"

People also call her a bad influence on young female listeners but really that's just sexually uptight idiots and male chauvinists that think singing about your weaker, less empowering experiences is inappropriate.

She's also polarising amongst critics and BTD was WIDELY hated amongst American critics although it received a strong critical reaction in Europe. If you ask me in years to come critics will realise they unfairly dismissed her and her music will receive the classic status it so thoroughly deserves.

Add onto all this the fact that she is gorgeous and much like other icons (Dylan, Monroe) she changed her name to fit better her style and imagery and yes, Lana does have strong potential as an icon, if any of what I just wrote makes sense that is...

You are so sweet to say that  Thank you so much! It was my pet project for the last month and it means so much to hear (or read lol) everyone saying such nice things!! I'm so glad to share it with you all!

I feel like the song takes on a whole new meaning in this context of the Aquarian Nun...

The lines "Jim brought me back, reminded me of when we were kids" I feel could represent how a newly spiritual-enlightened person would feel after discovering a new way of living, much like members of the Family did. Many came from troubled homes and had given up on life in general, and then they found The Source... When you are awakened to the "meaning" of life, you look at it all in a new light, much like you would experience life when you were a child. Taking it all in for the first time...

The line "He hit me and it felt like a kiss" would represent Yod "hitting" his followers with his revelations during meditation, dropping enlightenment bombs on them, if you will (lol) and instead of feeling pain, sorrow or grief, it would feel like a kiss... that feeling when you lose yourself in someone else and the world melts away. Becoming spiritually enlightened through meditation, feels similar in my experience. The whole world melts away and you become euphoric.

"Jim taught me that, loving him was never enough" Father Yod describes this in his "ten comandments" of liberation. According to the commandments, he taught that loving him more than you love yourself simply was not enough. In order to be fully liberated you must follow the rest of the commandments and put his words into practice and master them.

    1) Obey and live by the teachings of your earthly spiritual father.
    2) Love your earthly spiritual father more than yourself.
    3) Harm not one of your body parts either by neglect, food, drink or knife.
    4) Allow each vibration to complete its own cycle without interference.
    5) Possess nothing you do not need and share all that you have.
    6) The man and his woman are one - let nothing separate them.
    7) Squander not your creative force in lust, but come together only when the three vibrations of the physical, emotional and mental are in harmony with spiritual love.
    8) Each morning join your vibrations with the ascending currents of universal life energy using the method your earthly spiritual father has taught you.
    9) Do every act energetically, intelligently, truthfully and lovingly.
    10) When these commandments have been mastered, leave the house of your earthly spiritual father and do the work of your heavenly father.

It's kinda hard to understand. I think maybe she wanted to show off her new extensions and walk around in a wedding dress.

I edited the Ultraviolence cover because I don't like the way her hair frames her face, whereas in the rest of the shoot she looks so beautiful. You probably wouldn't notice any difference unless you compare it

Whats ironic is that people always complain about how manufactered and fake Lana is, when most singers are told exactly what to say in interviews and how to respond to questions. It is obvious no one's ever given Lana any insight on how to talk to interviewers, and when she says something that can come across as stupid or insipid, it's really just because she's being herself. She's the most real and relatable artist out their because she doesn't really fit in with any crowd, and sometimes she slips up and people give her shit about it. People always say "she's so fake she's just saying she wants to die to promote her shit music!" but people have made up ridiculous rumours about her online, she has no control over any of it and can't explain to people how untrue and hurtful these rumours are. From her perspective it must feel like the whole world hates her, I can understand her being unhappy. Like I said she's very real in her interviews, and she really does come across as a very lonely and confused woman.
  24. electriclavender liked a post in a topic by Lanakai in The Source Family, Ultraviolence & Lana Del Rey
From IMDB: The Source Family was a radical experiment in '70s utopian living. Their outlandish style, popular health food restaurant, rock band, and beautiful women made them the darlings of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip; but their outsider ideals and the unconventional behavior of their spiritual leader, Father Yod, caused controversy with local authorities.

Before we journey down the rabbit hole that is the Source Family, their leader Father Yod and the influence all of this may have had on Lana Del Rey and her album Ultraviolence, here is some background information of who they were and what they did:

There are also many excellent articles on Jim Baker, Father Yod and the Family available online. While I will be linking some of them here as references, I will mostly be focusing on the Family and their own personal interpretations of what was going on during the time they were active as I believe this is where Lana gathered most of her inspiration from. There are a lot of negative articles written about what actually was going on behind closed doors at the Family homes and while I'm sure some may be accurate, and will lend support to some theories, the writers of the articles were not a part of the Family and did not experience first hand what went on. While most former Family members do have criticism toward Jim Baker, the man, they speak very highly of Father Yod as their Earthly Spiritual Father, enough so that I don't doubt they would embellish. I recommend reading all evidence and articles with a grain of salt as all of it is personal anecdotes and there is no solid facts to back up any claims made.
I encourage every member of Lana Boards to dig in and discover any other pieces of evidence you may find regarding this topic. I will add to this post as new evidence is found with credit to the finder!

Here is the original post that I made in the Ultraviolence lyrics thread so please have a look at that for an idea of what started all of this:

    http://lanaboards.com/index.php?/topic/4684-ultraviolence/?p=198053

So hopefully now you have an idea of the Family, we'll jump into the evidence we have. Some of it will be stuff that I and other users have already posted on the UV thread, some will be new. Please note, this section will be updated as more info is discovered.

The Source Family and their Influence on Ultraviolence

    General Evidence

    Lyrical Evidence
While I believe some songs on UV are inspired by the Source Family, I don't think that all songs were inspired by them. So you won't see Old Money on this list for example, as it is clearly written for the Great Gatsby, inspired by the character of Daisy and written as an epilogue to Lana's Young and Beautiful.

I also believe Lana is inspired from many different things and she weaves them into her own story, either by becoming who she is writing about or imagining herself in a similar situation. She has said before that is in the habit of writing about several things in a song and tying them all together. For example, Video Games being about two different men, etc. So while some lyrics fit the Source theory, others will not as they are probably influenced either by her life or something else.

    Cruel World

    Ultraviolence

    Shades of Cool

    Brooklyn Baby

    Aesthetic Evidence
This section is about the pictures used for Ultraviolence vs pictures from The Source Family Archives as well as the soundscape Dan Auerbach and Lana came up with. Lana had stated that her new take on the UV album was "Unlistenable" with many different sounds, tempo changes, etc. Some of the Ya Ho Wha recordings sound very similar to how Lana re-did UV with the layered sounds, experimental vocals and tempo changes.

    Sound

    Visuals

As I stated above I will continue updating this post with more evidence as I find it. Please feel free to post any similarities you might find and I will happily add it with credit to you!
