Yes, production-wise all three singles are mixed in a very good way, but A&W feels so delicately crafted, as if they have spent weeks analysing every detail, but overall all three singles are very well produced.

Honestly, i wasn't a fan of The Grants at first. But I now like it as the third single. All three songs have the same theme (God, religion, gospel, faith) and Grandfather or whatever else wouldn't have made sense as a single since it wouldn't be representative of the album. This is gospel, the lana way, with multiple songs being about faith (the interludes, the Grants, ocean boulevard, etc). Just like btd was pop, ultra rock, honeymoon jazzy, lfl hip-hop-ish, nfr surf rock-ish and chemtrails folk-ish. (To this day, i have no idea what bb was supposed to be?)

I still think she should film a massive slutty venice beach-et video for taco truck tho and get some hot ass black actor (asap rocky, drool)  to play the bf

    1. Taco Truck x VB (10/10)

    2. Margaret (9.89/10)

    3. Kintsugi (9.73/10)

    4. A&W (9.54/10)

    5. Let The Light In (9.48/10)

    6. Candy Necklace (9.28/10)

    7. Ocean Blvd (9.16/10)

    8. Fingertips (8.62/10

    9. Grandfather (8.24/10)

    10. Peppers (7.95/10)

    11. Paris, Texas (7.86/10)

    12. The Grants (7.57/10)

    13. Fishtail (7.43/10)

    14. Sweet ( 7.32/10)

I adore all the songs, some more than others of course. I have to think about it and give it some time, but Ocean Blvd might be my favorite Lana album EVER.

Side note: I love the interludes, especially Jon Batiste's Interlude, but it's not like you can listen to them as songs. But when I play the album in full, I won't skip. It truly adds to the experience.

    I SMELL A GRAMMY.

Yes, one more Taco lover! <<3

I am new to this board. I am interested to read that most people on here don't like BB or COTCC much? This does shock me as a Lana fan. I always thought Lust for Life was her worst album - it is just all over the place in terms of genre and the featuring songs I think are terrible. Can I ask what you guys think about Lust for Life because I don't see it mentioned much on here like her other albums.

    Spoiler

i personally like Lust for Life. It was the last time she tried to produce a pop record, and i think she succeeded. The collabs really shined too, whereas on Ocean Boulevard, you barely hear the guests (for example, John Baptiste only says "Candy necklace" a few times, then he's gone. LFL was consistently good throughout, too, with only Coachella being an obvious skip.

Fans should be honest- if they don’t like it, it’s there to vocalise an opinion- likewise if they love it, it helps gauge its appeal.

I don’t like the random tweets off people mentioning her body or her looks in context to how they feel the music has declined though- very nasty.

Well, if they bring up her looks that way, you instantly know they're C*nts and their opinion is irrelevant.

I don’t see massive figures for this album unless fishtail turns out to be a straightforward beat bop.

I don’t know if peppers has appeal for Tik Tok tbh and Taco Truck definitely does not.

    Spoiler

Fishtails is not THAT bop imo. "You wanted me sadder" is just a really lame hook and quite repetitive. Taco Truck ftw

The Lanita part in Taco Truck definitely has TikTok appeal, as does the Venice Bitch remix.

I'd say "Jimmy Jimmy" will also do better on social when the album actually drops. Peppers or Fishtails might have some presence there.

So, that's already more songs than BB and Chemtrails had going for them int terms of TikTok.

  7. An absolute rave (10/10) from GigWise, in case it hasn't been posted yet.

    Quote

Lana del Rey is an artist failed by the music industry. It’s not set up for her, or for any artist with such a distinctive voice beyond dull sentiment or easy-in stories. She clearly has no interest in playing its game and so she’s been abandoned by it. She deserves to be handled how we handled Prince or Bowie; considering their albums and spontaneous holy offerings from the artist, send from exactly where and who they are at the current moment, totally outside of where music on a whole is at, totally trendless and demanding you either dive in wholeheartedly or fuck off and leave it alone. Building a hymn book complete with choral sections, full orchestration, RnB beats, vape references, entire sections of old releases, a country duet and a whole sermon – why do I deserve to say anything about that?

I give Lana a 10, knowing the work she put in, the things she wrote and the sound she put it all to deserves nothing less and an artist like that shouldn’t get anything less than applause from ‘critics’ that listen once and get to write on her art. So I’ll shut up, bow to her and say thank you Lana for letting me hear your work early. I really loved it.

Then do the reviews mean anything in the first place? Tbh this is an unpopular opinion but the only reviews I find interesting/care about are pitchfork and fantano… GP opinion is more important in the music sphere for relevancy so im waiting to see how they will feel about it.

Game time! Predict the things Anthony Fantano's gonna say in his Ocean Boulevard review. I'll start:

    Spoiler

"Did we really need two 5 minute long interludes on an album that's already an hour long?"

Even the trap beats don’t save most of the songs :noparty: it’s ballad City

I'm also in the "we want pop Lana back" camp. I miss the beats of Born to Die coupled with her old-age voice. That worked so well for me, especially with dramatic lyrics and strings. (Unless it's surf rock Lana or hip-hop Lana, then I'm game all the way!)

But I honestly think it's waste of energy to think that. Clearly, Lana is more interested in being our time's Billie Holliday as opposed to being the new Madonna. With three slow albums back to back (Taco Truck and a few other exceptions aside), she seems firmly positioned and comfortable in the singer-songwriter ballad lane, and I don't see her making any kind of switch. Especially since Jack is, like, her bff now.

So, there's no point in waiting for big pop songs. It isn't gonna happen. We should appreciate what we have. I'm just thankful for the great piano and folk songs that we do have on the last three albums.

Ikr this album legitimately doesn’t have a “bad” review yet. I guess the 70s are meh, but every great album has had critics that were more lukewarm on it. My favorite album of all time (Boys for Pele) was reviewed negatively when it first came out and it’s legitimately a trailblazing masterpiece.

70/100 is a very good score. The reviews are promising! Sure, nobody gave it 5/5 stars yet, but with that running time and two interludes placed where the are, we didn't really expect that to happen.

Im sorry but why people start hating the album my hype is kinda gone now after seeing all the people saying it's a bad album:toofloppy:

    Spoiler

Look, it's a good album with some fantastic songs on it (Ocean Boulevard, Taco Truck, Paris, Texas, etc.).

It's a massive improvement on Blue Banisters and has something for everyone. It's also exploring new avenues for Lana (e.g., gospel). I think it's brilliant how she starts with the gospel and mentions her pastor, only to finish with dropping acid and lyrics like "when I'm violent, it's Carlito's Way" and "blood on my hands"

It's just a bit inconsistent (messy in terms of genres) and has songs that could have been cut out (the interludes, mostly) for both listenability and brevity.

My biggest disappointment is that there are no bops on it, like Summertime Sadness, Doin' Time, Blue Jeans, and so on. It's her saddest/moodiest record or, at least, one of the saddest.

But you should wait to hear it for yourself. Because some people adore it, some hate i - it's completely individual.

I mean really it’s up to the artist with how much they care about controversy, and at this point it seems Lana enjoys having controversy around her lol. But I know if I was an artist I would make sure my manager/publicist was checking every one of my posts so I don’t accidentally get cancelled:crying5:

Omg i would have 10 people check everything lol. Pics, captions, everything. Cancel culture is cray cray

i do agree a lot of these reviews seemed rushed.. the most alarming thing was the guardian’s reviewer saying bb was their fav album 😭😭

The Guardian's critics have been very questionable for a while now. That review was a mess when you read it in full. Also, Alexis Petridis is a total dickhead who gave NFR a 3/5. Then they totally ignored him and gave it The Best Album of the Year ranking a few months later.

    They won’t

Given how much they liked AW, an 8.1 (best new record) is not outside the realm of possibilities I honestly expect 7.6 - the same as Lust for Life and Blue Banisters.

But if they give it less than 7.5 (Honeymoon, Chemtrails), that's when we should be worried because it'd be the worst-reviewed album since Ultraviolence (7.1), so it'd kinda mean a fall in quality. But I don't think they'll go that low. So, I say 7.5 minimum, 8.2 maximum.

yeah of course her manager could also be a woman & my point would still also be exactly the same lmao- it is weird to a degree to think any human should or deserves to be policed so heavily by another, down to simple statements on instagram. what cause they're famous? we, the public, create the celebrity and they shouldn't have to suffer for that IMO.

will they make blunders? undoubtedly, thats life, we all make them too.

I'm sorry i just think it's weird the way you talk about people "letting" her do things being problematic .... i don't like that kind of take but lets just agree to disagree on it atp.

So the wording is your problem? That's fine, I can rethink the phrasing.

But the fact is: celebrities are thought of in higher regard than me and you. What they say has more gravitas. Parents allow their children to consume Lana's content on social. The same parents who pay for those kids' allowance and, therefore, Lana's records. If Lana wrote something like "drugs are good," absolutely she should be stopped. Now, how you phrase that process of social media management is pure semantics. I'll use managed or co-managed if that will make you feel better
