My bf said this is like her worst album and that she put no efforts into her lyrics this time around. I’m like….????? Hello?? Fingertips? Kintsugi?? I think he just doesn’t get it. His favorites seem to be NFR and Born to Die, and he also likes LFL and HM. He said the only good song on Tunnel is Let the Light In. Idk… he was upset when he heard I bought like four different vinyl variations. Funny how this is the same guy who, years ago in 2019, held up the phone to record the show seeing Lana at the Greek Theatre when my wrists got tired. Totally supportive. Now he could take her or leave her. I guess the QFTC made him wary. Whatever. I still like this album so that’s all that matters to me. Relationships suck yo

i love the album, but i agree with your boyfriend. Bb'a and ob's lyrics are her laziest so far. All previous albums are legs better lyrically.

so, number 1 in the us confirmed? Follows uv and lfl?

Though I can see how the last three tracks sound like bonus tracks and it can make perfect sense to end the album at Margaret, I think the album is perfect as is. The last three tracks add a lot of dynamism to the album. I think it would’ve been too heavy of an album without them even though Margaret is a cute happy ending. Also, having the last three songs feels like the album more strongly ties into A&W which seems like the defining song on the album. The album before Margaret feels like the first half of A&W while the last three tracks feel like the second half. I wouldn’t like the album as much without the last three tracks.

i agree 100%. It just adds more dynamic to the album. It's 3 more or less upbeat tracks on an otherwise super slow-paced record

:toofunny: Why does this read as a 2012 comment on one of her vids on YouTube

Not sure what it feels like, but it's a fact. Just turn on the radio and you'll see where the culture is at.

And mind you - I'm planning to take piano lessons, it's my favorite instrument. But even I want to feel great and energeized. I'm not gonna listen to piano all day long, no way.

Ocean Blvd isn’t meant to be or feel immediate: it’s meant for one to sit with it for a long, long time. It keeps growing and growing. The people who keep reducing it to a piano album are just stuck in BTD/UV nostalgia and can’t consume music that isn’t short or beat driven - or both.

Disagree with this a bit. It's unfair to say people are "reducing it to a piano album." It is a piano album factually (a few tracks aside), and some people will inevitably be put off by that.

I don't think it's fair to say they're "driven by nostalgia" or too obsessed with beat driven music. Piano is just not for everyone. The exact same would happen with Dua Lipa if she suddenly started making piano-heavy albums. She'd lose followers.

People want to feel happy and listen to music at the gym and feel good about their life. Piano music is deep but often depressing. And I say this as a big LDR fan who loves the new album. I love it to pieces, but I also know that I'll be going back to High by the Beach, Ride, Summertime Sadness and Doin' Time more in the long run - cuz those songs make me feel good. Makes sense?

I mean we all hate fishtail lol

The real surprise for me is him liking Margaret so much it 'tore him apart emotionally'... really didn't see that one coming.

im sooooo curious to see what she's going to do next; is she going to build on Ocean Blvd and get that 10? is she going in a totally new direction (the closer on this album makes me think she could, although ive never really bought into the idea that her closer tracks are a peak into her next era) and how long until that work is released? Im already so impatient omg

Bro, her last three-four albums are all about the piano. I think it's there to stay. Yes, OB finished with Taco Truck, but let's all agree that this does not mean another BTD or anything.

Another reviewer thinking the last tracks are like bonus tracks on this album. I kinda agree, although Margaret does not have that closer energy.

she coulda have uv-ed it and named them bonus tracks. But i think she wanted to make a point and create a character arc on the record - from church lana back to slutty lana

Yes something I have struggled with on this record is the lack of narrative, it’s quite hard to really decipher. There isn’t much ‘story telling’ just her going from one thing to the next and it isn’t very coherent, but I guess this is what she meant by automatic singing. I’m not sure I personally like it much.  I think it better suits her poetry.

I think there is a slight bit of pretentiousness creeping into her music since NFR.

Very well said. Like, she got all the "genius" acclaim she wanted with NFR and then started to believe that everything that pops into her head is a great lyric or melody. But it isn't. E.g. "charlie stop smoking etc, Caroline will you... " Anyone could have written lyrics like that.

and the pretentiousness - yes. "Me and my boyfriend write hit records without trying, like, all the time." Um, technically, you haven't had a solo hit since Doin' Time four years ago but okay, Lana.

Never understood them. Not even AJay. Sorry, but why would I care how many stupid faces some random person can pull while listening to an album for the first time? I'd much rather read a well written review that actually dives deep into the technicality of the music and lyrics.

ajay is great tho. She has fantastic taste and really understands Lana's music. Also, she's so god damn fun to watch. That nfr review was everything

While both those albums have some of her highest highs, I feel like they also have some of her lowest lows.. which sort of taints them as a whole (BB in particular, especially production wise)

I feel like I’m one of the few people who absolutely love chemtrails, but even I can admit that a good chunk of the album sort of just feels like filler, and doesn’t quite seem necessary to the album as a whole (and the fact that the albums already so short doesn’t really help)

Chemtrails had a great concept but only like 8 great songs that carry that concept through. The rest of the tracks were obviously fillers (like Breaking up Slowly and for Free). Now if it had tracks likes Paris, Texas, Let the Light In and Margaret, it'd been a 10/10 record and one of her best.

I’m sorry, but Fingertips is unlistenable. Kintsugi, which is longer, mind you, is much better and easier to listen to. It’s funny because when listening to them, I’ve always thought Fingertips is the longer song.

Fingertips is very repetitive melodically and gets very grating. I feel like it would benefit from a dramatic pause with additional sound effects and production to match (birds chirping, waterfalls, wind sounds, etc.). Just make it like a full-on movie monologue scene with an interruption that something else is happening while she’s singing to herself, then back to the song so it’s not just one huge clump of words. like a musical number interrupting a scene. With this one, it should be the reverse. Something interrupts her singing, then she goes back to singing. Unfortunately, they didn’t do that. I actually think the "mother" censor is really good. It gives the listener relief from the word vomit. I wish there were more pauses like that.

Thank you! I have a ranking list of all LDR songs, and this "song" is at the bottom of the pile. Like, right where "Coachella," "The Other Woman", ":"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and that god-awful "You'll Never Walk Alone" cover. These are literally unlistenable to me. I will skip them till the end of time.

So you all are too positive today that's why I decided that it's the perfect day to say that for me Margaret adds literally nothing to this album. Both musically and lyrically. It's probably a nicer listen than interludes but while I listen to whole album it's the only track that makes me feel nothing. Like I want to punch Judas in his face when he starts screaming but at least it's some emotion. Margaret is new Beautiful, I'm sorry.:noparty:

P.S. love or like everything else though, so don't drag too much. :oprah3:

Margaret, Kintsugi and Fingertips are so similar - it's almost like one very slow song in three parts. That's why they're the least played on iTunes apparently (among the songs that aren't interludes).

That said, Margaret >> Kintsugi >> Fingertips.

The track is considerably better than the other two imo.

Yep really bored of hearing about her family and friends, I don’t think she knows what else to sing about it. But she see’s a lot of her songs as personal and for her most of the time.  Whilst she has done a few things different on this album it’s not hugely different or revolutionary. Some experimenting,  but nothing super extraordinary.

I agree with this. If I hear her sing about her boring sister and brother one more time... She started doing it on BB, and I was hoping it's a one-off type thing, but now I see she thinks it's a good idea.

For me, what doesn't resonate with this albu is them lack of compelling storytelling that made songs like Blue Jeans and NFR such career highlights. On  BTD and NFR, every song, even a minor one like Cinnamon Girl, had a complete, compelling narrative. Like, you literally know what the song is about, who the characters are, etc.

With Ocean Boulevard,  a lot of songs don't have any narrative whatsoever (the interludes or the grants being an "oh, I'm doing this for our family,), or they're a boring diaristic narrative of sorts (fingertips, kintsugi) that meander and go on for an eternity), or they're simply muddled, virtually indecipherable narratives (fishtail, candy necklace).

Of the entire album's lyrics, I kinda remember OB, AW and Paris Texas lyrics only, with parts of Sweet (Beverly Center) and Peppers, maybe. I do feel like her lyricism has become lazier post-Chemtrails.

Controversial opinion but I actually agree with most of what he says about her records for a technical standpoint, like what he actually says makes sense from the prospective of someone who doesn’t really like Lana. I do obviously disagree with mostly everything he says on a personal level, I don’t think she has ever had a record worse than a 7 (or even dare I say an 8)

I always liked him. I think. he's a solid critic who actually knows his shit. Some of his criticism of her early stuff was too harsh (wasn't everyone's?), but he's really come around and it's fun to see.

He always digs Jack's production, so I'm expecting a 7/10 on this. I still think he'll dislike the interludes and tracks like Fishtail and maybe even Taco Truck. Let's see. Should come out today or tomorrow in full probably.

kinda tmrw never came in a way...

It woulda fit on LFL perfectly. In fact, a lot of Lana's songs could be re-arranged that way.

For example, I always thought Blackest Day would fit perfectly on UV, Grandfather on Norman, Paris, Texas on Chemtrails (especially with "Not all those who wander" being right there), etc.
