Then how do you explain Leonard Cohen? Over 80 years old and hotter than ever. With NO hit singles, and in his entire life, one top 10 album.
He sells out Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall and only does it with his lyrics, which is poetry.

The vast majority of hit tours now are by artists who were from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s who have kept their entire fan base (those still living of course) and do so with zero new product, or when a new record comes
out, it does not sell well, except for the fan base.
What about Garth Brooks? He retired for 15 years, came back, radio won't touch his new stuff, but he is setting records in concerts left and right (and not only that, he is now free to be the liberal he always was, but had to hide
when he was in the mainstream country market going for #1s on the country chart. Garth actually is a good example- he forced people to find him, to listen to him only on country stations and refused to release singles to the Top40
    stations, and people did.

Maybe a good example is Matraca Berg. Mainstream country, pop or rock did not play her songs. Yet she now is in the songwriters hall of fame and others have sung hundreds of her songs.
And Matraca also had the problem of being taken seriously because of her really good looks.

Yes, art exists. Not everyone is in it for the money, and Lana don't need a penny, so no need for money.

Lana found and got fame, on her own terms, not on the old boys network way of doing things. That alone is why the old boys network hates her. Because they can't mold her or shape her, and they can't control her.
(see:Prince for another artist they couldn't control)  For too long record companies have ripped artists off.
Lana is doing it her way, not anyone elses way.
Whatever she does or doesn't do is 100% great by me, because it's her life and she is doing as she pleases.
(Perhaps some here while debating minutia are actually forgetting it's her life and she is doing it on her own terms, and in her private life, she seems happier than ever. Maybe thinking otherwise is just thinking wrong.

The 27 narrative right before UV after all was the media picking up on a wrong fact. She was never 27 at the time, she was 28. But the media writes what they want, and ran with it.
Lana outsmarted them, and Lana outsmarted Sam Smith. Lana got the #1. Sam still hasn't gone higher than #2. I doubt anyone will remember Sam ten years from now, there will be 100 newer more relevant people than him.

But Lana will still be singing (perhaps as Elizabeth by then, perhaps still as Lana).
The one shame is, she didn't get the chance with Lou Reed. That would have been major.

and Lana is always one second away from releasing one of her many unreleased (and future unreleased) pure pop instantly catch and trendy songs that would instantly go to the top
but she doesn't. Because that doesn't fit with what she wants. But we all know them because we are lucky enough that Queen of Disaster and Pale Moonlight and the others were put out there so we can hear them.
Which is more important in the world? Writing a song or making a buck? The power is in writing and creating. The creations are there already.
A true artist creates, not sells.  (like most actual paint artists, they are not famous until decades later).
It is two different areas of being.

Lana in her sleep could snore a song ten times better than the new Britney/Iggy song Pretty girls, is that really what anyone here would want Lana to become just to have a number 1 song?

    @@LittleFool -
John Lennon threw up before he performed, he had a fear of the stage, Carly Simon does too, especially in her hit making days.
Brian Wilson spent 2 decades away from the stage and preferred the studio.

I think other artists over time are going to have #1 hits with Lana's songs, and I also think Lana will get billing on some major hits that use her lyrics from her.
Now that Marvin Gaye's estate won their lawsuit and now that Bruno Mars/Mark Ronson's song recently without a lawsuit added 5 new songwriters to the credits, I think we are going to start seeing in the next five to ten years,
Lana winning a lot of awards as songwriter and eventually being in the Songwriter hall of fame, which includes not only recent people, but songwriters from every single era in music. While not as flashy as the Rock hall, in some ways just as or more important.

I for one am happy for the chance 13 months later to see another tour, and a new album in the works.

David Bowie who is comparatable  to Lana was a person of many phases and stages.
Bowie was always played on WNEW-FM when they were free choice anything goes, almost no singles played, just album artists

I liken Lana to the WNEW core artists that were somewhat like the toys on the island of Misfit toys
Top 40 didn't play much of them, but they had status and acclaim and are still the basis of the format today

    artists like
    The stones
    The Doors
    The Who
Zeppelin and the groups that followed imitating them (though zep was imitating others themselves)
    Lou Reed
Leonard Cohen (the 1960s Suzanne and others)
    Tom Waits
    Buddy Holly
The Animals (Eric Burdon, lead singer, who had the 2nd hit with "Don't let me be misunderstood" that supposedly Lana is putting on Honeymoon.
John Lennon- but not necessarily the singles, same with the Beatles (remember, Sgt. Peppers never had a single released)
Elton John from day one(1969, before the hits, during the hits, after the hits, but not necessarily playing the commercial hits)
    REM
    Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones
    Blondie before they were commercial
    Pete Seeger
Harry Chapin (who like Lana was unique, and who had one surprise #1, but was never considered a singles artist as his songs were way too long for Top 40)
    Judy Collins
Richie Havens, Donovan, Jeff Beck, Cream(Clapton)
(anyone who played Woodstock or the other 60's,70's fests, where Lana would have fit right in)

So I put Lana in that category

@heartcore- Mariah had 19 number one songs, none of which stand out as being a Mariah Carey song,. They all were interchangeable and Whitney or Celine could have sang them. Nobody was copying Mariah as she was a copy of
    many others.
Lana has already had one person after another copying her, her style, her videos (Taylor recently did), and everyone wants to be here.

The difference is the Rock Hall of Fame is for unique one of a generation types (though the Hall is Male biased both in who picks the members and the members it picks, but Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed and dozens of others never had
one #1 single after another yet are loved by the hall.
Singles oriented groups like The Monkeys or Chicago or even groups like Moody Blues never get into the Hall. Carole King if not mistaken only entered the Hall in tandem with Geffen as Songwriters, not solo performers.
I doubt Celine Dion will ever make the hall unless the record company really pushed it and Mariah is not a shoo-in either.(see next paragraph-)

And the truest difference between Lana and Mariah? Mariah ACTUALLY "F'd her way to the top", being the girlfriend later married for awhile, to the head of Sony records at the time of her signing (and her popularity for the most part ended on their breakup),
while Lana wrote the song as a no, she didn't actually reach the top by doing that and it was written as a retort to the haters who said that.

Lana should though release a real Christmas song, perhaps a duet with Leonard Cohen (or Gaga) so that she can be heard at Christmas time when all the stations go 24 hours of Christmas for the Season.

    @@PARADIXO- what do you mean "she isn't successful"? Four top 10 lps/cds/albums/whatever including 1 #1 and 1#2 is ultra-successful.
In the older days perhaps it would have been Album Oriented Rock (meaning significant acts like Dylan and the Dead and Pink Flloyd that for the most part, except for one offs, don't bother with singles, and just release albums -great everlasting albums that people listen to the whole album time and time again

Why do so many here want Lana to be less than she already is and just be a clone of the ones who have mindless single after single, each more forgettable than the first?
If the Top 10 hits come for Lana it will be like Summertime a surprise, but she is not going for top 10 single airplay, though if I ran the radio stations, I would go against type and play her.
If this were 1969, she already would have had 10 number one singles in a row (or top 10, ala Petula Clark or Mama Cass, solo and group)

50 years from now, music lovers won't be able to name one Mariah Carey song (except maybe the Christmas one she basically stole from Vince Vance & the Valients) yet people will
remember Born to Die and Ultraviolence (and the news ones yet to be heard)

Quick, what do people remember the Beatles for, first and foremost? They think of Sgt. Pepper's.
What do people instantly think of Beach boys first and foremost? They think of Pet Sounds and Smile.
Pink Floyd? Dark Side of the moon, 40 years and it's still on the LP/CD/Album chart (3 years later, Born to Die is still on the Top 200 alongside Darkside)

Album Orient Rock, Lana would be playing on the legendary WNEW-FM were it still around today

that the way one knew they made it either was to appear on the Cover of the Rolling Stone,
Have a number one lp (anyone can have a #1 single, but a #1 album is more important and got the attention of the cool radio stations like the long gone WNEW-FM which loved lps (and one of the last surviving links, Dennis Elsas just retired two days ago with his last show)
    and appear in the
New York Times Crossword puzzle. (which is like having a #1 single, happens very rarely, but when it does, it will happen again to the great ones- And this was the second time.)
and it was specific to Lana Del Rey (it didn't say actress Turner or singer Del Rey) it was specific to Lana.
    Now it's 3 for 3

So in the last 2 weeks, we got a new song, a new video is coming, the tour is starting at which point there will be hundreds of new versions of songs, a NY Times Crossword puzzle mention, followed by Honeymoon released in a week with no competition and a second number one LP (which would be historic and give Lana FOUR top ten lps in a row, which again, would be historic especially for an artist not going for number 1 singles or being the flavor of the day.

BTW- I bet Lana can finish the entire puzzle, in all my life only once did I get every letter done. One has to not only be smart, but get the references.
Actually, that would be a great item to get signed. Gotta keep that in mind.

I don't know why people want Lana to be Taylor Swift, when Taylor Swift herself would love to be Lana (as would Lorde, as would Sam Smith or anyone who copies her, and
becomes more for the day bigger than her, but where will Sam Smith be 5 years from now? Probably forgotten along with Lorde and all the copies.
Taylor Swift wants to be the most commercial of artists, but that means little artistically.

People hear nothing from the legends in between albums/shows- and by legends not talking 2015, talking throughout history

Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Paul Simon- no gossip, no press releases, they release something, or do a show and people see that, nothing more or less.
One never hears much about Bruce Springsteen in between long, long spans.
How much did one ever hear from Roy Orbison?

Comparing Lana to a female artist? Why? Compare her to the biggest artists which is more what she is going for than Rihanna or Taylor or Iggy or Miley or Lindsay Lohan people looking for 24/7/365 media

I myself would rather be able to walk alone on a street, or go into a café or restaurant without being chased all over town.

Sort of an anti-star, instead of the flavor of the minute.

The sort of thing that gets remembered 25 years from now.

As for tv in USA? After the shit she went through, why bother? Thankfully NBC Brian Williams got his ass handed to him, karma came back and kicked his rear end but good. After what he did to Lana, glad it happened.
And Lana did great on SNL, in fact, so great that Sam Smith copied the entire style on SNL, yet he was beloved. Why?

As for Life is Beautiful- obviously the Adeline people wanted the trailer, perhaps due to Honeymoon being released, the record company doesn't want competing sales.
    So they nixed soundtrack.

As for the supposed missed publicity in Europe? Perhaps that was never definite, or they forgot to pay Lana for the plane ticket over. Perhaps it was just rumors.
As for Ultraviolence, one of the greatest full lps in history, one song better than the next, listened to fully as an album (not meant for singles, much like Elton John's Capt. Fantastic
or Goodbye Yellowbrick Road.). Which is a throwback to the 60-70s also, to listen to a full album.

@-  that is playing the game the others are playing. The music stands alone. She doesn't need to do anything, the music stands alone.
As for the videos, both Shades of Cool and West Coast were great videos showcasing the songs and continuing the story from prior videos.
Ultraviolence was indeed a very stylized video, though it was not what some were expecting or wanting, which is what makes them Lana's. Never doing what is expected.

Name one other person that got a debut #1 album without doing one bit of USA tv or publicity. Sam Smith did everything and anything and sold his soul, and he did and still never has reached #1 in America, and his music is a direct copy of Lana's.

Her 2 songs that were specifically directed to the critics and rebuttals from other artists say it all - both I f'ed my way to the top and Money/Power/Glory.

Put Lana back in 1969 and she would have already had 10 number one singles and 3 number one albums. There really is no female artist in the USA that has become number one in history doing it her own way.
    None at all.
If she was a male artist in what is a male world, she would be lauded for everything she has done (much like Prince, for instance).

Yes, all time artists are important, because what Lana is doing has not been done before.

Sure some may want this, or some may want that, but that is what others want, and not what she wants.

Diva? I don't think Lana knows what the word is. She just is in a different linear place than others are.

Much like Leonard Cohen. Tell me the last time Leonard Cohen did a publicity tour in the US that included the late night or early morning tv shows.
I also don't recall Leonard doing that back in the 1960s either.

(edit as it clicked in duplicate)

to add- in just 2 weeks, there should be 200 new versions of every single night of the tour available on youtube for all of us to watch. Seems like each night is always filmed and posted.
And though I expect 85% of the songs to be the same as in prior tours as most people in the US have not seen her in concert, and would be disappointed if say, Video Games or Ride or Summertime Saddness is not done, a few different songs should be added.

I look forward to seeing each nights performances on youtube, along with the shows I am going to (3 definite so far, possibly more if I can get the time off).

I also don't recall Leonard doing that back in the 1960s either.

to add- in just 2 weeks, there should be 200 new versions of every single night of the tour available on youtube for all of us to watch.

I just hate the kind of people who complain about her releasing soundtrack songs or releasing another album a year after her last one, though. At least we're getting music from her which just adds to the 200+ songs we already have.
