  1. As far as what BTD would sound like if it had been recorded as Lizzy, i don't think you have to try too hard or look further than some, not all, of the BTD demos, like HLH, NA (nexus), DMD, and LO. I'm not saying they would sound just like that, but i think it's the easiest way to imagine them in a similar vein. They would just have more of a "band"/"live" sound. The BTD demos that are actually technically demos like VG, Carmen, WY, and MDM would not sound like that in an AKA mold. Demos like DP, SS, and TIWMUG are in a transitional style that's neither representative of AKA or BTD. As for AKA being recorded by Lana, i think it's pretty easy to imagine what anything going through the BTD Emile Haynie filter would sound like Did you like how i purposely used as many initialisms as i could?
  2. Yeah, that's mostly how i feel. These lyrics sound like self-parody, and this isn’t, by any stretch, the first time that happens. It’s staggering how much her lyrical abilities have steadily declined over her career, even just since BTD. I really don’t know what happened to the creative lyricist in her I don’t think Y&B is necessarily a bad song, it just doesn’t do much for me, i really don't feel it. I guess my favorite aspect of the song is the arrangement (i do love the tube bells!) The bridge (lyrics aside) is better than the entire rest of the song. Some people have aptly noted that this song sounds like a kind of hybrid of a few different songs of hers, but the thing is, she already did those songs much better. Not only does this feel like a retread, but also like a leftover, an outtake. But my biggest issue with it, which i had prior to even hearing the whole song, is that it’s constructed around a clunky melody that i find neither interesting, memorable, engaging, or unusual. That the trite question in the lyrics is set to this melody just further brings it down. I don’t want to say too much about the production because it’s a low quality file (160 kbps and you can really hear a lot of compression) but it seems like a rather plastic and cold production. Yet not plastic and cold enough to be intentional. I feel like this is obviously supposed to be an emotional song, but it sounds more like going through the motions. Her vocals are more and more often taking on this sedated, drone-y quality that, i hate to say, i’m starting to find tiring. And i’ll keep saying this: i hate the cheap sounding digital reverb they always use on her vocals, i think it does a disservice to her voice. Someone please fucking run this woman’s vocals through a real echo chamber, i promise that everyone’s minds and hearts will melt. I think the orchestral version sounds much better and i'm interested in hearing that. But again, the lackluster melody and poor lyrics i feel are always going to get in the way of this being a good song. I’m very surprised to hear this being called one of her best songs. That’s a pretty lofty statement considering how much great material she has. I don’t know, i can’t help wonder if that’s just new release excitement talking. Maybe this one will be a grower? Lord, i really did not set out to write this much about this song--i've barely even felt anything listening to it. To make up for my long-winded dribble, let me leave you with a picture of some cute lambs wearing clothing:
  3. I think Namira's question is a valid one--Lana's current circumstances are very different now than they were in her past, so prior motives may not necessarily apply now. I found the responses to the question a little defensive, not the other way around, and very idealist. I strongly doubt anyone has the answer at this time though. By the way, the "horse plant" and other things it's been called is topiary.
  4. Jesus, did you hear how the second suspect was found? Tsarnaev was cornered late Friday as he was hiding on a boat in a backyard of Watertown, a suburb of Boston. Police were alerted to his whereabouts by a man who went outside after authorities lifted an order for residents to stay inside during the manhunt. The resident saw blood on a boat in the backyard, Davis said. He then lifted up the tarp covering the boat and "saw a man covered with blood," he said. Can you imagine? How fucking scary. I would NOT have lifted the tarp and instead ran back in the house and shit myself.
  5. Don’t know which song it is but it’s Billie Holiday. I like this trend of evilentity betting cake. I have to say again, i am really very happy with this recording and i hope this is, at least in part, an indication of things to come for the new album (hello "western," "west coast" and "stripped down"). Nothing about this feels like someone else’s attempt to make her “relevant” to today’s charts. There’s a subtlety and nuance to this production that most of BTD and some of Paradise is lacking; no turning everything up loud in your face going on here. For example, i am very pleasantly surprised by and pleased with how the acoustic guitar is recorded and mixed, it’s there more for color and texture rather than as a “spotlight” instrument--you feel it more than hear it. If you have good speakers or headphones listen for the sub-bass organ note that comes in at 3:19 when Barrie sings “Oh, summer wine.” It sounds amazing. That shit fills the entire room if you’re listening on speakers, and it rattles your skull if listening on headphones. I love it. I like that throughout the whole song there’s just a kick drum and snare, and that the beat just coasts along without trying to carry the backing track on its own. And how good is the drum sound? How about that marimba? And the James Bond horns sound great. Her backing vocals are excellent and so expressive, she really nailed them. Everything seems to be working together as one, to serve the whole of the song/production, rather than the song showcasing any one thing. I am geeking out pretty hard on this one, you guys. But someone answer me this: why do people (and so many at that) take music videos and upload them to their channel? There are like 25 channels already that have uploaded the video or just the audio. What the hell do people do this for?
  6. I was wondering when someone was going to bring up her flashing her ass at the beginning. I certainly wasn't going to mention anything.
  7. ^ Good one, dude. You're getting very creative lately...
  8. I don't know if Lana would even make my top 20 and i am here. U wanna fight?
  9. What's random about this that makes you say that? For me it never comes down to just one thing like a singer's voice; it's about the sum of the parts--the composition, arrangement, production, performance, even engineering--the entirety of the recording. Besides, we're talking about the golden age of record production here, a 1966 Lee Hazlewood production. This version is really great but in my opinion it can't touch the original. And even so, like i said, i think Barrie's vocals are the highlight here. Though they sound excellent together. I would love an entire record of them doing duets like this. Speaking of which, it would be a no-brainer to start doing this on tour, and they really should, but you know she hardly ever does what's obvious or logical.
  10. Where in the world did this come from? This is such a faithful cover that, let’s be real, i’d rather just listen to Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra. But i gotta say, Barrie’s voice is as perfect as can be for this song. I think he actually steals the show here. Who the hell produced this? Please produce her next album. This is the best production since AKA.
  11. WHAT IS THIS??????????? This is so Lee Hazlewood/Nancy Sinatra. Oh my god. Oh duh, no wonder, just realized what it is, ha.
  12. Yeah, i'm not into liking things ironically.
  13. Oh my god.......i was about to say something about this picture: But i guess i won't now. FINE. These are so unbelievably hideous.
  14. I am not evilentity, i do not keep receipts. I throw them out.
  15. On the first day of the tour, hours before the show, Lana Del Rey Online had a status about what the stage looked like and i asked how they were getting the information (wondering if perhaps they were inside the venue or what) and the amusing response i got was, "I'm a fansite on twitter, I find all this news"
  16. I don't know about lyrically, but she mentioned in one interview that TIWMUG is the one song on BTD that she was not happy with the production. Though if that's the case, you'd think she'd be unhappy with the production on most of the album... Oh yeah, the video that, at the time, revealed a new Paradise backing track ............................................................
  17. You know when you go into a stall in a public bathroom and there is shit all over the walls like someone's ass exploded?
  18. Thanks, Felix. Now i know the drummer's name and who wrote the arrangements, just the info i was looking for
  19. What does that say before "Orchestral Version"? DH? What is DH? This could just be an arrangement that the film's composer scored for a scene rather than the backing track for the song.
  20. Go to any article on the story and just briefly scan through the comments and you're guaranteed to come across some jackass spewing anti-Muslim garbage. It's staggering the conclusions that some people allow themselves to draw.
  21. He was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's, yes. But you'd be surprised, Sitar. Don't underestimate people's drive and creative spirit. Here's a fascinating and inspiring note about one of my favorite composers, Alfred Schnittke: And, let me tell you, his post-stroke compositions were heavy. Also, in the last year of his life, Beethoven had to press his ear against the piano to feel the sound of what he was playing because his hearing had gotten so poor, he could barely even hear. There's also world-renowned virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie who is deaf. Not saying that Bobby will exhibit the same tenacity, but you never know. He's not dead yet. On a completely unrelated note, i would love to see Maddy mowing the lawn, ha.
