Ethel Cain 9,047 Posted December 7 First review of the EP from Uncut, 6/10 Quote Acclaimed songwriter gets experimental on challenging yet stirring new project The sparse, slow opening 12-minute drone that is “Perverts”, more soundscape than song, suggests this 90-minute “project” is going to be a slog. It’s certainly not the accessible gothic Americana meets dark folk-pop of 2022’s Preacher’s Daughter–the 15-minute “Pulldrone” here does recall the sound of a trapped bee. However, while this is a deeply experimental record, it is also subtly stunning in parts. “Etienne” is gorgeous, and tracks like “Punish” are almost Grouper-esque in the way they combine tactile and texture-heavy production with ghostly melodies, delivered by an equally haunted yet beautiful vocal. A lot of PR companies send out albums to critics way in advance to be reviewed, its not uncommon.
