Joe Biden to pardon *federal* marijuana convictions

Recommended Posts

Quote

President Joe Biden is issuing an executive order pardoning all Americans who have been federally convicted of "simple possession of marijuana".

The move will only affect a relatively small number of marijuana convictions since most occur at the state level.

Mr Biden's announcement stops short of a full decriminalisation of cannabis, which he promised as a presidential candidate.

Recent polls show that a majority of Americans believe weed should be legal.

"Sending people to prison for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives and incarcerated people for conduct that many states no longer prohibit," Mr Biden said in a statement on Thursday.

"Criminal records for marijuana possession have also imposed needless barriers to employment, housing and educational opportunities," he continued, adding that racial minorities were statistically far more likely to be jailed for cannabis.

...

The Democratic president said he would call upon all state governors to issue their

He is also directing the Department of Justice and the Department of Health to review how cannabis is classified under federal law.

"We classify marijuana at the same level as heroin - and more serious than fentanyl," said Mr Biden. "It makes no sense."

Recreational marijuana is already legal in 19 states and Washington DC. Medical use is legal in 37 states and three US territories.

However, the drug remains illegal at the federal level, even in states where it can be legally bought and used by millions of adults.

It should be legal to grow the PLANT and smoke the PLANT everywhere, always

Like people can own 55 assault rifles but having a PLANT is illegal? No.

I mean I have nfi; I'm Australian and it's difficult to even buy one here

But the POINT is, having a weapon to kill people with is more legal than having a plant

And that's stupid af

marijuana should be 100% legal and i also believe that drugs should be decriminalized in general

drug addiction should be treated as a medical issue, not a criminal issue, nobody should go to jail for simply being in possession of any drug, we should do way more to help and support those dealing with addictions, putting them in jail does nothing to actually help

This is a slay answer.

Marijuana, LSD, and mushrooms (along with other non-addictive hallucinogenics) should be 100% legal. All other drugs should be decriminalized. Nobody should be in jail because of their addictions.

Dark Brandon’s next target must be hallucinogenics!

especially since some of these drugs, namely weed and shrooms, have health benefits, we should be doing what we can to help the people instead of large corporations who try to push back against legalizations for their own financial gain

Yes, and the entire prison system (all offences) should be overhauled to resemble how it is in countries like Norway, where prisoners live very normally and are free to come and go, work, study, etc. Youth offenders are basically never locked up (one exception in an article I read was that kid who shot up that island). It's only the very worst offenders who are actually locked up. Other countries are doin' it wrong; countries like the US and Australia be locking bitches up for any reason

People commit crimes for a reason and it's very seldomly because they are "bad". People deserve chances and help, they don't need to be locked up and criminalised and doing that doesn't help them OR society.
