I’m creating this thread with the intent for discussion of general American politics, the presidency, Supreme Court, Congress, state legislatures, news stories, bills, etc etc etc. It could be a good space for stories that don’t need an entire thread

 

A lot of topics can be covered here for sure, but I wanted to start off with two huge stories from today:

although the people he saved were evil people, I see why he did it. Trump was going to finish them off as soon as he got into office - Biden probably opposes the death penalty

This H1-B issue dividing Tech MAGA and Stupid MAGA is literally GOLD for dems, but I know they'll somehow screw it up again--because they'd rather chew off their own right foot than take any stance that may even partially appear as "populist".

Within the past week I’ve seen 3 people with maga hats (2 in the same day) IN AUSTRALIA. Like I thought we were better than this but I do see a running theme of them being crackheads on a Centrelink income. 
 

whats also sad is one guy had a little son so god knows what he’s gonna grow up into. Then another was a teenage boy like why does his parents let him leave the house like that.

Mike Johnson wins the Speaker vote in an unexpected first vote ~ two Reps that were against him in leadership switched their votes back to him right before the vote ended, saving the House from going into any further rounds of voting. 

 

Johnson was elected on the fourth ballot in October 2023, after it took 15 rounds of voting for previous speaker Kevin McCarthy in January 2023

Trump continues his provocations against Canada, Mexico, Denmark, and Panama. Claims he may use military or economic force against these countries to:

 

• Annex Canada as the 51st state

• Take Greenland from Denmark by force

• “Reclaim” the Panama Canal

• Rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America

• (Alaskan bonus) Rename Denali to Mount McKinley

 

Unfortunately I think we’re taking for granted how serious he is.

How exactly is this going to bring down the cost eggs?

Why is Trump so focused on Greenland and Canada. It geopolitically only really makes sense if he expects escalating tensions with Russia…which would be…unlike Trump 🙃. Unless his relationship with Putin has soured…

Idk if this is just an austrlaian thing but in primary school (age 5-12) every year we would vote for our sport house captains. Every year there would always be someone promising to put soda in the water fountain instead of plain water. (I’m trying to use American terms idk if water fountain is right we call it a bubbler) anyways the uneducated younger years would always vote them and they would always win. Then every year there cycle repeats of soemone that promises something then never actually does anything about it and the actual good leaders (I was one) never actually get chosen as the house captain. Essentially trump supporters are the uneducated 6-9 year olds in this situation

As Trump's policies drive climate change, these regions will be of greater economic importance in the coming decades, as the natural resources will be easier to extract.
