You know, i suddenly see a reality show on the horizon. Evil and i would be the most boring characters on reality TV. What would we even do? It would be like hours and hours of him sitting in front of a computer sleuthing the internet for Lana content. I would sit around all day listening to music on headphones. I imagine he and i sitting in the same room but on opposite ends of the room, mostly in silence. Every once in a while one of us will get up to go to the kitchen and say something like, "I'm going to the kitchen, you want anything?" Your husband would occasionally pass through, uncomfortable but agreeable, questioning to himself this decision that you've made. How will you reassure him that it was a good decision? What are we gonna do when it's time to go on the forum? Do we take turns, each of us allocated a set time with the computer? Or do we all go on at the same time and surf together, having to come to an agreement on which threads we want to see, reading over each others' shoulder? Oh my...

Lana is a... not-good model. I know everyone loves her editorials and shoots for H&M and she looks lovely and beautiful but... they really leave a lot to be desired. It blows my mind that used to actually model (maybe she wasn't a serious model?), because these most recent images are horrible.. She looks the same in all of them. She looks stiff. She seems to think that raising her head slightly and looking down is the ultimate ~modelesque look~ that must be done in every photoshoot.

 

I don't know, maybe it's not her. Maybe she's just getting really bad direction during her shoots, or if the editors are choosing crappy photos or whatever, but she does not shoot like a real model to me. It's unfortunate that someone that is so stunningly beautiful and photogenic and has a face the camera loves is shooting so poorly. :\ She photographs like a ~celebrity~ (actor/singer) being shot for a magazine/campaign, rather than a model. It's just odd considering her apparent history as a Ford model. Maybe we'll see a video of her being shot where she doesn't have an ~environment to act in~ so we can see how she moves when photographed. There's obviously some sort of talent there that extends beyond her looks that kept her in the modelling industry.

I think my years of Cassie-stanning have affected my opinion on this. I'm used to stanning for an artist that also was a model before they blew up, and still shoots like a model to this day.

Most of these pop girls would be great as commercial models and are, but it's a certain look and talent to be a high fashion editorial model. It requires the ability to be a canvas and a chameleon and a dedication to the fashion/modeling industry.

I think she's modeling as Lana Del Rey and not really trying to raise fashion to any higher levels, but just for her own art/brand as in this project overshadows everything that she's doing so she never really takes you to this insane fashion moment when she models since her over-all look is already inspired.

Damn, I always work Lana's tilted head, parted lips, and downward gaze. Like, "Oh? Me? I bet."

 

Lana photographs like a singer, in my opinion. The uniqueness of her look is the only thing that really sets her apart as a model. It's enough for me Incidentally, none of those tilted-head pictures are my favorites. I like the power of her straight-on look, which isn't used nearly enough. The cover of Zoo magazine, the H&M winter image where she's standing in front of the car and kinda touching her hair as it's laid over her shoulder. Sure, they aren't special fashion-wise. I guess I'm just a fan of her beauty--whether or not that's relevant to this issue.

 

On the other hand: A moving camera eats her the fuck up and savors every inch of it. In motion, for instance music videos, she just plain stuns me. Someone refute that.

I don’t think she needs to be more like a real model (isn’t a good amount of modeling stiff and rather lifeless anyway?) She’s a singer-songwriter. I think she just needs better photographers to shoot her. I think the problem is that she is often shot by REALLY generic, uninspired fashion photographers who really bring nothing to the photos except this sort of plastic commercialism and a heavy hand of the worst kind of photo editing--something that is actually symptomatic of a wide media/cultural problem that is only getting worse. That sort of shit is poison.

I think you misunderstand me. "Be more like a real model"? -- I expect someone that was once professionally a model to not consistently shoot so poorly. I am not expecting Kate Moss or Giselle type shots here. I just expect to see her move naturally and comfortably in front of the camera, having clear knowledge of what looks good and have that translate well in print.

 

A good amount of modelling is not "stiff and rather lifeless". Let's break this part: The vast majority of the modelling industry is commercial modelling, in simple terms: accessible, relatable (yet still unattainable enough, obviously). It's impossible to be accessible and relatable to potential buyers you are trying to ~connect with~ when you are "stiff and lifeless". This already rules out the possibility that "a good amount" of modelling is stiff. Onto high-fashion: the particular "stiff and lifeless" look is found here, particularly within the advertising for major fashion houses... which have obviously influenced newer houses and brands (see: Jil Sander -- I really, really hate this brand btw, random fact about me no one wanted to know). In magazine editorials (think Vogue, V, Harper's Bazaar, etc), the particular look you're referring to (if done) is often highly exaggerated, but done with intent and purpose. There's a difference between the stiffness of a Jil Sander model and the stiffness of Lana modelling -- one is intentional and meant to set off the clothing, the other is a person that appears to be unable to translate the image they'd like to project with their body to the camera.

 

(The other half of editorials is the absurd/surreal/off-kilter shoots. This, coupled with the idea of the Supermodel, pretty much refutes your notions about modelling. Find me one successful supermodel that primarily takes stiff and lifeless photos -- guarantee you you can't do it. I could get into this further, but I just wanted to show you exactly how small that particular look is in the scope of modeling; it's like saying, "Hey, don't the Beach Boys mostly sing about surfing?")

My concern is not that Lana become more like "a real model" and be ~fierce~, it's just that she works better with the camera. I really do think a lot of this rests on Lana though: when a former model is consistently posing in an unflattering manner and this has been published across a variety of publications, it raises the question: How well does she know her angles? How experienced is she? I have no doubt that a better photographer would draw out better photos, but how much good would they be when the subject appears to be unknowledgeable on how to pose in a flattering manner?

 

Because of the relatively small pool of photographers + photoshoots I drew from, I will wait until we have a greater variety of shoots to choose from before making my final decision. Something tells me a lot of it is Lana, but I hope to be proven wrong and blown away by a batch of photos not dependent on a prop to model with or any sort of environment to act in. :3

She was a teen model. If you take a look at those photos we have of her modeling, you can see that that's the type of modeling every pretty girl can do. She's really just a mannequin in those photos, she never modeled that professionally. And I do think, Lana can pose. I really like some of the photos from photo shoots of her. I absolutely hate those H&M ones, though and I'm sure the photographer wanted her to look so stiff. In my opinion, H&M shoots suck, pretty much, every time. I think, most of the time, Lana's just supposed to look pretty. People will buy those H&M clothes either way.
