I think one can't compare last year, prior years and this year.

Think it is broken and it goes to all artists.

Think billboard is skewering toward a specific service and not counting anymore some older ones

So billboard magazine themselves is not just the reporter, but they are creating the news, skewering the news and it reeks of payola

Those that played their fest get high numbers.

 

Something really sucks in this and it almost reminds me of how the country music industry was able to wipe out in 1989 any and all older artists

and completely change just by only charting certain radio stations (120 out of thousands) who played just what 2 or 3 people wanted to have played).

 

One would think if this is what is happening, it affects all artists and they should be concerned.

 

of course, the negative meme some above start being taken as the truth is also wrong, but if its continually repeated it, more and more posters

start with the false meme and then repeat it, so there may actually be no problem at all.

Born to die itself did not chart on the top 100 singles

Video Games was #91.

So for all the talk on fifty or so pages in this thread, we are talking about one #91 single from BTD (prior to the remix unexpected SS #6).

 

Comparing BTD album (#2 on the charts debut, still on the charts) with sales frm UV (#1 debut) is impossible. People are not buying in numbers

from a few years ago (and BTD had two separate releases and the deluxe w/Paradise release added sales to the total.)

There is nothing really to talk about. The HM release is symbolized by that lonely board over the Mel's Drive-In, which makes everything related to the album seem like a dream, an afterthought. The songs released so far are pretty but without the electrifying sensation that I felt listening to BTD or UV. HM so far sounds like someone is saying goodbye and being deprived by the energy to go forward. I found the V magazine shooting somewhat fitting with this picture and I’m looking forward to see the HQ pictures and I’m curious about the Franco interview too.

 

But I can’t get out of my head what Dan Auerbach said about Lana in the Rolling Stone interview. It was for me like a confirmation of something bad about you knew but that you never fully accepted until then. The way the interviewer, a veteran music journalist, put rhetorically the question “Do you think she gets the respect she deserves as an artist?” and the way Dan answer it, without hesitation, “No, I don't think she does. But you know that. I don't need to tell you that”, it sounds like its common knowledge between the insiders that Lana is not a respected artist. Like many of you, I read a lot about her and I got the feeling that she’s disrespected as an artist, especially in the US, but somehow I hoped that this is just the opinion of some music journalists.

 

I cannot imagine how difficult was/is for her to be creative while being disrespected by your peers and music journalists and to be attacked relentlessly with misogynistic and ideological rants. The puzzle pieces are starting to fall in their places: that she didn’t find a community in the music business, that she likes to work with certain people with which she feels safe, that she’s afraid to go before the general public with her music, that she don’t want certain people (critics) to hear her music, that she feels fucked up talking with the press, that she doesn’t want to promote anymore and excluded the press from her tour, that BTD and UV didn’t get any Grammy nominations or recognition in the US, that she often looks depressed.

 

I feel silly now that I expected bells and whistles from this era when things were/are possibly that bleak in her life. She’s not there emotionally and this is coming through her music lately. I have the feeling that she somewhat lost the joy of creating for others and she didn’t put her heart and soul in her songs lately. There is just a detached (but genuine) sadness and disappointment feeling without really wanting something.

 

Now, what is the point to remain a recording artist when you are not respected, your career is making you depressed, you’re afraid to perform your music and possibly you lost your joy of creating for others? On the other hand, it’s hard to let go a career that others (good musicians) are unable to achieve in a lifetime and not to use your only real talent. She needs to sort out these things because she cannot go forward for long like this.

Graham, we weren't talking about how Billboard is "skewing" their methodology or whatever.

It's just that Lana was a big streaming artist back in 2011 but the charts were only Sales + AirPlay. It's sad because now her streaming DECLINE and now the charts count streaming. Although things are looking better this era - streaming wise.

I agree with some points. And disagree with others, personally for me the songs we got so far are amazing. I don't think she lost the "joy" of creating music. Lol in fact, she's more driven than last era at least.

 

And besides we are still very early in the era, we don't know what's coming. Although I do wish she makes more "public" appearances before the album release. She seems to be always hiding away. She has not promote High By The Beach at all. Not a single live performance yet. I hope things change in the coming weeks.
