Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass Reviews and Metacritic Thread
DCooper replied to ilovetati's topic in Latest News
Ugh these reviews suck. Like all great art, the magic will be lost on a lot of people who don't give it proper focus, or people who already have dismissed Lana before they listen. -
I wonder how much the project has changed and evolved since she originally had it planned for release before NFR. After listening so many times, it really does feel like it was meant to come after NFR. Moments like "stupid apartment complex" wouldn't be as special without Mariner's, and the return to Sylvia Plath in Bare Feet on Linoleum is even more powerful after Hope. What she says about people who feed off of paradise seems like an introduction to themes she will explore in Chemtrails over the Country Club. Also, the super stressful ending doesn't sound like it would be leading into something like NFR. Now I expect the new album to be a lot darker than I was originally thinking. As she says, she's gone scorched earth and choosing to end on a note this dark makes me think the project is going to be a little more unhinged.

In one poem she mentions watercolours of orange trees with snakes running through them, so I think the cover is a metaphor for simple things that look peaceful and beautiful but when you look closely there is darkness hiding.

OMG this was terrifying. What a brilliant ending.

OMG I am truly floored. Just listened twice. Absolute masterpiece of atmosphere and storytelling. I'm pretty much speechless tbh what a compelling and unique journey she's put together, I'm so proud of her. The payoff of the last two tracks is so amazing and I am left completely unnerved by the ending. I think this definitely gives us an idea of the direction she's going with Chemtrails and also Behind the Iron Gates.

I'm not a big Taylor Swift fan usually. I did really like 1989 but I find most of her music pretty obnoxious. This album however is amazing, can't stop listening. Her best work by far in my opinion, she did a great job here.

I heard the title track in my dream last night. It had a really long heavy-drums intro, and the opening line was "Mary had a little lamb." It was about a little girl named Mary who kept herself isolated at the country club, and was very strict about who she would let in or not. The song got sassier and more aggressive as it went on and Mary grew up, and at the end of the song Mary looked up at the sky and saw the chemtrails above her and realized the error of her ways. LOL

Maybe she's a performance artist leaning into certain stereotypes and assumptions about her before she eviscerates us all with her brutal take down of rich white hypocritical Jesus freaks in the new album.

I'm nervous. lol Things started so wholesome with Joan's paintings, and then we spiralled real quickly.
