I absolutely will it's awkward sometimes when you don't know where to start looking into an unfamiliar artist lol.

If you wanna, start with "Ungirthed," then "Saltkin," and then "Belispeak." The whole album is fantastic, but not as happy sounding as "Fineshrine."

I took forever to start listening to their whole album, but now I'm so glad I did.

Oh, and I'm listening to "Draggin' Around" by Rilo Kiley.

Alice BrightSky finally released her album Box of Me several years in the making and including the song "Lover's Fate" on which Lizzy Grant sang background vocals and I posted about back in December. Alice was a fellow musician in the Williamsburg music scene with Lizzy and won third place in the WLSC 2006 in which Lizzy competed. You can listen to previews of her album and buy it here on CD Baby.

In my sleuthing, I've listened to music by a number of artists I wanted to contact. I do this for a couple reasons. It seems rude, somehow, to contact an artist and only ask them about another artist's work. I like to have something positive and genuine to say about their own work. And as Mae West said, "Flattery will get you everywhere." Often I'll only listen until I find something nice to say. That didn't take long with Alice, but I kept listening anyway because I love all her songs, especially "Pry Me Away", "I Am", "Up Up and Away", "Tie and Untie", and of course, "Lover's Fate". I really like her songwriting and voice. Her music has sort of a 90s girl-with-a-guitar Lilith fair folk rock feel to me, and I mean that in a good way. She reminds me a bit of Ani DiFranco, except I like Alice better. She was super nice and friendly when I contacted her and really helpful with Early Shows questions, so I hope some of you will show the forum's appreciation by buying her album and get to hear some good music as well.

    I want it

Hopefully she talks more about her new album! I swear, every "stacked a cappella", "Spanish guitar", "western", "spiritual", "stripped back" adds a year to my life span.

Sounds like she's been reading Lanaboards and taking a cue from some of our members' responses to the feminism issue  . And considering that the writer got her age right, maybe some magazines have been reading LB too

Yeah, Google translate is not doin' it for you, Loon. Try again, ASSHOLE.

I'm amazed. Someone finally got her age right.

Or is this only because her birthday comes shortly after this will be published?

    Ooh! Me likey.

I believe in the person Amy Winehouse used to be...

There she goes again, fetishizing another 27 Club member. Luckily, we all know she'll be 28 soon. So don't you dare try that shit, Lana.

Damn, that Ford model friend of hers is such a fucking scold.

Duets. Plural. Please give me more material for another covers-themed Reydio show, Lana. "Some Velvet Morning", preferably.

    Oh, I bet they do.

I still remember the day I first heard it, it was right after she performed it live for the first time.
I even think video didn't have the title, it just said new song. It was also the first song I played after BTD got out.
And even though I know she has more powerful songs, this one just gets me all the time.

Alright so as far as I can see there is no such thing as song appreciation threads on this board so I decided to create one for one of my favourite Lana songs, Radio!

Why do I love this song so much? Well...first it's nothing you'll ever hear anywhere else, it's different from anything else I've ever heard. It has that summery feel to it that makes you feel warm eventhough your listening to it when you walk home and it's snowing. It has such a great vibe and such a good message! It's like a huge FUCK YOU to all kind of criticism and judgement.

    My favourite lines:

"Now my life is sweet like cinnamon"
"Lick me up and take me like a vitamin"

I love Radio, especially the demo, which is the version i will talk about. That opening is like an explosion of Skittles shooting up into the sky--that silly fake harp, the digital finger snaps, that bass drum that drops, and  the drone that sounds like you’re warping through a happy wormhole--and you just know that the next three and a half minutes are going to be blissful. I think the album version really dropped the ball by changing the way the songs starts. Anyway, this recording just has such a perfect feel, something that i think is hard to capture in songs, but once you have it, it’s like you can do no wrong with a song. It’s like if the song was half a BPM different or one instrument was mixed a tiny bit too loud or too low, it might all come crumbling down. But fret not, because it’s perfect. That chorus is pure gold. It’s so airy and light, that must be the music that plays when you’re skipping on clouds. The double tracked vocals are like an auditory candy bar. And the vocoder is amazing, let’s throw a fucking vocoder on here and have it panning back and forth, Lizzy, this song needs to be even more perfect. I love the little cheap sounding 8th note hi-hat rhythm throughout the song--it sounds like something a kid sitting in their bedroom would have playing from their battery powered Casio in 1991, trying to make a great song. And, finally, those counter melodies on the synth during the last chorus are like flying into the sunshine. But, like ataraxia mentioned, there is an underlying sadness that pokes through a little, and that is one of my favorite qualities in pop music.

I still like the album version (which is built around the basic tracks of the demo) but you-know-who fiddled around with it too much and, i think, lost some of that feel from the demo. Still though, probably his least offensive reworking.

HELLO YES I AM HERE WHAT IS UP? I AM DOWN FOR THIS THREAD.

Radio. What a tune. I did a whole paragraph on it in a different thread not sure if I should repost though?

I love the jazz cafe performance, but like sitar The Scala Club one has a special place in my heart so i'm gonna link that too

I like how she sometimes goes a little high on the "i finally found you" when she sings it live, it's such a sweet little touch.

Also something I've noticed is lyric changes through live performances. The BtD line is "baby love me cause i'm playing on the radio" but in live performances she tends to change it to "(my) baby loves me cause i'm playing on the radio." It's subtle but I think about it a lot. In the BtD version it kind of implies she's asking to be loved because she's finally famous, it's a little bit of a tease too. However the latter suggests she's only loved because of her fame which is a completely different emotion. I dunno why she does it or if there's any reason to it, but I find it interesting none the less.

Let's talk about the demo though. (i'd link that too but the youtube version is pitched up horribly, what's a girl to do?)

It has such a full sound to it and while i love the almost isolated sound her vocals have in the BtD version, the vocal layering all throughout this version are superb. This is like slow, sad electropop that i'd dance to in a club at 6am while the sun is about to rise and that just sounds sooo cooool. What I love about this demo generally is that in its most pure form it's a pop song, but for me at least, there's this real understated sadness to it, you know? Tbh I think this song would've done well on Paradise, thematically () at least. All these illusions to death, being reborn and paradise.

in conclusions, i like sad things that I get to overanalyse.
