Norman Fucking Rockwell - Pre-Release Thread

Her vocals on LFL were globally lazy. I remember first hearing White Mustang and being striked by how lifeless she sounded on the second verse, and how nasal her voice sounded, and I hated that her voice broke when she sings ‘you just couldn’t stop’. I think she sung through paper on that one but it’s such a shame that the cool and relatable side of it was underpowered by the production (from the second chorus - what were they thinking...) and this way of singing. what I TRULY don’t want is her getting back to her submissive persona. The overall vibe of antifeminism is what I don’t like on Ultraviolence, and it has fortunately disappeared from her records. Her way of singing was also particularly annoying on the PWYC verses (the same lazy kind as on Fine China) although she really snapped at the end of the song -

I think she saw her album as something very different from what it really is (or from the consensual perception of it). She had probably given up on the acoustic direction long before BAR leaked. She thought she was taking a stand, but her ‘political’ songs (I’m still somehow puzzled about this word for those songs which have nothing political) didn’t go anywhere. Writing half of the lyrics as if they were those of a random love song and trying to inject social preoccupations on those of the other half isn’t a good idea anyway. And on some songs it gets mixed with good-intentioned ideas/energies she wants to convey (notably on Change or BPBP) but it doesn’t make any sense and it is mainly what made this album a mess. She probably thought of her exploring different genres as something valuable, positive, interesting. But lyrically, sonically, it touched me so much less than her precious records. I think the most interesting part of the process of its creation is the early 2016 time at which she felt more spiritual, a little bit darker, and wrote the most beautiful songs. Out of the mess that came afterwards were born a few gems, but it remains a shame that things turned out this way. She probably took a lot of the wrong decisions in 2017, but in my opinion, the album was already a mess before that. And the collaborations were most likely already there. Sad to think of all those songs that ended up scrapped. Of course there are Yosemite, Roses Bloom For You, but I really think the political outtakes were worthy because it seemed like they were getting a little further than the Coachella-like ones. -

I think Cherry is more efficient, more mesmerizing, it’s got its own universe. The project might be less ambitious than Venice Bitch, but the melody is haunting and the production fits the song quite well. It’s the only song on which the trap beats sound good. Plus the live version with those harmonies and this rockier instrumental gave the song a new dimension that VB doesn’t have yet. -

I’m wondering if this album has a lot of outtakes. On the one hand, she's been quick to do it (considering that she started only in January, and she was on tour until April), and she seems to stick to her idea of having 11 songs (because HTD was first teased like a month ago, and she said it was the last song she did). Maybe she finds those 11 tracks super cohesive and doesn’t want to change anything. On the other hand, 11 songs isn’t that much considering she said that everytime Jack and her found a melody it would turn into an actual song. And it doesn’t really feel like her to put all the songs that she has recorded on the album. A Deluxe edition would be very nice this time -

It’s such a shame that the acoustic side of LFL was practically scrapped. The TNC demo had this rawness and this truth that the final version didn’t have (even though Sean’s exotic production was beautiful). Change really felt like it was done in a rush. BPBP is a good song, but nothing impressive and her vocals are way less expressive than those of the demo. I wish she had let more space to the acoustic direction that she had teased and said great things about. She obviously should have let Yosemite and possibly BAR. I think it was pretty clear that RBFY wouldn’t be on it from the second she posted the snippet, because the caption sort of said it. I just don’t get why she teased it again last year in October/November. The biggest problem on LFL remains the presence of tracks 6-9 though -

How To Disappear live is very beautiful - but it literally is in the exact same vein as the snippet that got so much backlash. There’s not even another melody that we hadn’t heard before throughout the song (which I was a little disappointed with). Even though I love the snippets and the released songs so far, my only regret concerns the bridges of this album. In VB and HTD, they have the same melody as the verses (even if the instrumental goes wilder in VB, the melody doesn’t change). MAC doesn’t really have a bridge. And I feel like Cinnamon’s is the snippet she posted on her story (in which she sings very high notes, but basically on the same melody as in the chorus). I feel like her not giving such beautiful bridges as before is a loss, because it used to be the most beautiful part of her songs, notably on Honeymoon. But I really love both the stripped-down aesthetic (ballads with only piano or guitar don’t bother me) and the mid-tempo production that we heard on Cinnamon and HTD. I hope the album finds the right balance between those two and that it also includes 2-3 songs that actually sound like surf rock because that’s something I’ve been craving for for a long time, and I feel like it would go along quite well with the songs we’ve heard. -
Except for the fact that the song was done in July/August and you stated this in early June. I don’t think dropping two songs that were not even recorded (even though we don’t know about the other one) was planned back in May/June. Actually I think it’s easy to predict such things because no one really notices if it doesn’t happen in the end - anyway it hasn’t been 12 months since the end of the LFL era, and I think you can find one insider predicting something happening (which actually is vague enough for people to put like anything in it) for each month in 2018. I’m not coming for you, but I just wouldn’t pay the highest attention to the future predictions of this insider Besides I really like the stripped-down feel to this song and I wouldn’t mind several acoustic ones on LDR6

Well I find LFL more cohesive than UV and HM, it's how I feel it, it has this general coherent vibe that comes through better than her other albums did -

let's be honest I love the Honeymoon production and aesthetic and the calm/spiritual ballads concept but it truly isn't her best album. Some tracks are very forgettable, which isn't the case on LFL -

Cruel World > Heroin but not by far btw LFL > UV > HM > PD > BTD I'm not talking in terms of iconic songs that the albums contain, but in terms of cohesiveness, general quality and atmosphere. As an example, BTD contains 4 songs that are in my top 10 of all Lana songs, but it also has a lot of fillers, unnecessary songs. Her voice is too edited and basically all the songs are overproduced. This album in itself is a mess, even though there are 4 absolute masterpieces on it: Born To Die, National Anthem, Off To The Races and Video Games. Besides, LFL doesn't have any track that I would put in my top 10, but it also doesn't have any track that I dislike - except Coachella. It's more mature, more intelligent, more open, more diverse yet coherent. -

I don't remember hating the production before I joined LB though... I always hated the lyrics and melody but the production didn't shock me at the time -

I remember hating it on my first listening and then a few days later I read that Universal Poland had written that it wasn't on the record, and I suddenly regretted hating it so much because it wasn't even on the album and it was just an innocent song that didn't want to hurt anyone and got unnecessary hate when Lana only wanted to share us a new song she was proud of and then I saw the tracklist and I went back to bashing it -

I don't know... I just hate the melody of the chorus, which rarely happens with Lana. Of course the production could be way better but I don't think it could be a GOOD song in any case... Like I don't even think it could not be the worst song on LFL -

Ok but girls did you really truly genuinely like the acapella version of Coachella?????? I hated it on the first listening of this Instagram video in which she looks weird and my hatred did nothing but GROW ever since. Truth is, this song has no potential and it just shouldn't exist at all -

I don't know why, I'm a little mistrusting in LDR6... I mean, the tracks on LFL that she did in 2017 are the ones I like the least, so I'm not sure I like the direction she's taking... -
