  1. Florence, Ellie, Haim, even Marina :(  Also Nirvana, Bruce Springsteen (though I like his 70s stuff), and The Beatles. I don't get it, I just don't get it...

Lana was the first female singer I really loved. (Paving the way for Lykke Li, Grimes, Charli, and Sky... I adore them!) I pretty much grew up steeped in heavy metal misogyny. I liked alt bands too, like The Cure, but for me it was very compartmentalized. It was almost like two different types of music for two different types of people. The greatest contribution to the world by alt-rock bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam was not, IMO, bringing these forms of music together, but rather, raising hard rock's social consciousness on such a vast level.

I understand about Linkin Park being more therapeutic than a lot of male-led acts, though I do generally prefer male voices. Puller (fronted by Michael Lewis) is another one I turn to for trauma-processing. They're very hard to find anymore; time marches on, the 90s are long over, and the Christian music industry favors ignoring-the-victim shtick. (Since becoming a feminist, I've scrutinized the lyrics of a lot of the Christian alt-rock bands I used to love, and Puller is the only one without a hint of the language-of-the-oppressor vibe that I'm trying to unlearn my tolerance for. I hope I'm not offending anyone -- I still love the church. But we're capable of screwing up the culture as much as anyone.)

    WOODEN SPOON AWARDS:

(Songs that recieved high votes but did not make the Top 100)

    • Methamphetamines (+20)
    • Crooked Cop (+20)
    • Beautiful Player (+19)
    • St. Tropez (+19)
    • Chet Baker (+18)

    • Gangsta Boy (+16)
    • Blue Velvet (+15)

    Note:

There will be no tied positions this year. Songs with the same number of points will be ranked depending on the highest vote for that song. For example, songs A and B both have 10 points:

    Song A has: 5, 2, 2, 1

    Song B has: 3, 3, 3, 1

Song A would rank higher in the Top 100 because it ranked higher in somebody else's personal favourites list. Please keep this in mind when viewing results.

What the hell did I miss?!?!?

The winner of the shirt, chosen by generating a random number between 1 and 54 then counting across the list of voters, is:

  3. Oh yeah! So yesterday night while the site was down, I was watching American Dad and during the commercial break I heard SuperLove on some speaker ad!

I was screaming! You is on the trailer for Vampire Academy and now this! I'm so excited!  :D

    I saw it too!!!  :kris:

(Well, I heard it at least... I was half-asleep, thought hey wait I know that song, no way! And then promptly forgot about it till now!)

  4.

Interesting negative review from Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz) of Tropico. Anyone hear of the group? She's somebody who went to Kent with LDR but is obviously not a fan (or bothered to listen to Paradise on Spotify very much, although she indicates she might revisit the video because she likes the songs). Very interesting site (musicians talk music). Hope more LDR reviews coming from there someday (if they aren't there already).

Eek at the article. This is an interesting example of non-dialogic communication in journalism. (She even misuses the term "dialogue" when "monologue" would be more appropriate. )

The first scene is an ornate, staticky afterlife [?], where a caricaturized gang of John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Jesus Christ dialogue [ :nono: ] nonsensically over each other...

Sorry if I'm heading off-topic, but this sort of communication strategy really bothers me:

So it’s telling that in a school of less than four hundred kids, I remember almost nothing about Lizzy Grant, who, only a few years older than me, served as both arts and literary editor of two campus publications, and sang in several school choirs.

I.e., when confronted with an inconvenient fact which could undermine your argument, incorporate it into your argument using a disingenuous transitional word or phrase.  :wtf:  I actually despise this strategy with a passion, whether it's employed by a journalist, an attorney, a teacher or a pastor. (Yes, our classes in our various disciplines taught us how to B.S. our way into churning out written/rhetorical product. That doesn't mean we SHOULD.)  :read:

It's too bad, because this writer does have an interesting perspective coming from the same school, and possibly the same or similar classes, as Lizzy Grant. But she should exercise more restraint, and let us the readers draw our own (potential) connections between dots, rather than resort to projecting experiences onto someone she obviously didn't and doesn't know. I guess it just goes to show that negative bias =/= objectivity.

  5. Can't believe no one made a reference to '108' on page 108

    Our Sky Ferreira thread's 108

It's half as long as Charli's but that's okay

Cos Sky will rock you for about a billion decades

Tonight my dinner's Smirnoff Ice and cornflakes

  6. She posted on her tumblr about how the album changed her life and that her hair will now be dark since she's the face of Redken and she needs healthy hair

she looks really sick here though  :ohno:

She can pull off any color hair, but she needs to let her eyebrows grow back!!!

  7. You don't have NTMT under the album it's named after????

I tried to like it... Not even the video can make me like it tho. Nope nope

(Gonna try watching the video silenced, with Hallucination playing ;) )

  8. What are your transitions for Crybaby and I'm Not Alright? (the 6second tracks)

Just 6 sec of silence to separate the bonus tracks (I think I got it from Cracker's "Kerosine Hat" - not that it matters  :P )

  9. I can't believe it, I've finally achieved perfect unreleased flow! This is important in making me like songs. I enjoy nearly all of Lana's unreleased because the flow in my personal playlists is so spot-on. And now I have the same with Sky :xcry:

How do y'all organize your collections?

    Flawlessly, of course  :lanahairflip:

  10. Those black things with blue circles in the center were def UFOs to me. They'd be weird-ass clouds. Plus during Bel Air (and a bit before) you hear a bit of a high-pitched whining noise that for some reason always accompanies UFOs (at least in the cheesy kids movies I used to watch).

I guess I just associate those noises with radio waves. (Come to think of it, there was a movie that showed radio waves sort of "going back in time" as the view pulled back farther and farther from the Earth... now I'm just rambling...)

  11. I didn't see any UFOs. (Just awkwardly computer-generated clouds  :creep: ) I thought they were ascending to a Paradise of their own making. Or Eve's making. Or what Eve perceives as her own making.  :creep:

    Then again...

  12. To be honest, I 'enjoyed' tropico, but wasn't blown away by the content.  Visually it was stunning, more so during the music video sections, and especially during Body Electric which was gorgeous (very Pierre et Gilles inspired), but I am unsure why she flew away with UFO's...?????  Any ideas?

I actually don't think they were UFOs. I saw clouds, and Adam and Eve ascending to Paradise. But I don't know whether she intended it to be ambiguous.
