    Charli XCX

Well, I went to amazon this week to see about buying Pure Heroine, and I ended up getting True Romance instead It is so good!!! So now I'm playing catch-up on all the Charli XCX posts since April. And finding lots of goodies along the way (info, links, fabulous fan art). And 14! It's so funny, because its sound reminds me of early Simple Minds, who evolved into one of the best 80s bands creating atmospheric pop, and look where Charli is now! Is it wrong that I still like Heartbreaks and Earthquakes even better than TR?

Does anyone have a link to the final track "14"? The discography tumblr just used the same link as "Yet Again." (Or is it some kind of joke? )
  6. C U L8R Alligator needs an upbeat 60s girl-group instrumental like the one for Queen of Disaster. I hope there's a more finished version out there.
  7. There are plenty of remixes more creative than this SS one. Sometimes it's amazing how a reinterpretation can add new layers of meaning. Remixers must choose which elements to put together and decide how they will juxtapose these elements. It's not a question of whether they are artists, but whether their creation speaks to anyone, on a case-by-case basis -- artist-by-artist, work-by-work -- just as with any other form.

  9. She's beautiful either way, but I just hate that she doesn't think she's beautiful enough without them. And if she's risking long-term damage, I wish she wouldn't... but it's her business.

    Lorde

"Cut my teeth" is an expression that means "got my start" or "started out." I believe just before it she says the line about never seeing a diamond ring; so I take it to mean the first time she saw a diamond ring was a wedding ring in the movies.
  11. Yeah, the Bechdel test isn't a perfect test. It's just sort of interesting how embarassingly simple it is to meet it, and yet how embarassingly rare it is that it gets met. Obviously the Royals video has a lot going for it, and it's a strong message from a female perspective. It's not so much a problem that this particular video focuses on male characters; it's just one small part of a culture that still tends to think in terms of: male = normal human female = deviation from the norm In Royals, a beautiful female celebrates average males living their lives. Where are the average women? As in much of pop culture, they are once again absent/invisible. None of this makes Lorde or her music video director guilty of deliberate sexism. It's just interesting what artistic choices we make (and accept) as a culture to represent humanity.
  12. This, this, a thousand times this I'm still trying to decide if Lorde's "Royals" fails the Bechdel test: Maybe it's not fair to hold a music video to the same standard as a feature-length film (but I figure if a Minnie Mouse short can meet it in four minutes, surely it's not asking too much). Maybe music videos need a modified test: Feature at least two women who interact with each other in a way that is not completely, obviously, only about a man. Royals: Average guy + average guy buddies + female narrator who "gets it" = FAIL But does it fail? Does it matter whether the song is inspired by Lana Del Rey's "National Anthem," in which case the video might be seen as a dialogue between Lorde and LDR? Or is it enough that we can presume the female narrator addresses "everybody"? Bottom line for me: include an average girl/woman and then I'll be able to feel like somebody "gets" something, tbh.
  13. Yep, version 2 It's the particular combination of vocals and instrumentals in the chorus of HIAR that kills it for me. They're both too high; one of them needs to take it lower so I can freakin' relax my shoulders.
  14. songs I hated at first but eventually got bumped up to two stars Gangsta Boy Back to the Basics Ridin' still one star I Was in a Bad Way (not to be confused with Daddy Issues, which I love) Hit It & Run (not to be confused with Hit & Run, which I love) Scarface (not to be confused with Noir, which is extremely okay)
  15. Hawaiian Tropic, Daytona Meth This one IS confusing. This is how I have them: "Hundred Dollar Bill" (4:01) 2010 "Hundred Dollar Bill (demo)" (3:13) 2012 ...but I see that the Leaked Songs thread have them as versions 1 and 2, both from 2009. I'm guessing version 1 is the (4:01) more upbeat one, that we heard first.
  16. I think a lot more has been made of it than is warranted. So she's never found anyone so far to go down the rabbit hole of poetry and music with her to the extent Barrie has. I don't think she's trying to describe everyone else on the planet. Maybe she's a little defensive about her preference to listen to the "masters of every genre." She's probably been accused of trying to impress by name-dropping the "greats" (like, even before LanaBoards got wind of it) and is like, "No, I'm not trying to be cool. I know other people who are trying to be cool, but that's not what we're doing." Rather, she learns by immersing herself in her study of the "masters." That's what I get from her comments anyway (in this interview and elsewhere). I could be way off base about her true intent, but I think there's a valid way to interpret her comments as less offensive. I think it can be funny to deliberately take what she said to the next level. But when the exaggerated version is repeated more often than the actual statements, I feel like her speech is being misrepresented. (So thanks, Pin Up Paradise, for posting the actual quote in context.)
  17. Gatsby songstress Lana Del Rey's new full-length to feature previously unreleased acapellas Howard Stern disses "Crooked Cop"; reports, "The whole album is pretty much like this"
  18. Are you thinking more 2005-2009 (acoustic rock like Fordham Road), or more 2009-2012 (soft pop like I Don't Wanna Go)? And when you say "relaxing," do lyrics matter? ("Disco" and "Get Drunk" are anything but relaxing IMO)
  19. IKR? But with the recent info, I think what they're saying is that even with "vaginal-only" action, the clitoris IS involved because it basically is wrapped around the vaginal canal. So I think that actually validates reports by women who have been saying all along that they enjoy "vaginal-only" stimulation!

    Cliteracy

I'm just gonna throw this topic out there. http://blog.museumofsex.com/the-internal-clitoris/ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/28/cliteracy_n_3823983.html http://io9.com/5876335/until-2009-the-human-clitoris-was-an-absolute-mystery/1093115185 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1283096/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clitoris (Talk amongst yourselves. I'm a little verklempt.)
  21. Thanks, I'm using it too! I don't know how you do it, but you've made me like another song I was ready to give up on (IWIABW). Context. Is. Everything! And C U L8R helps this playlist so much
