The Paradise and the esoteric origin of mankind
PrettyBaby replied to litewave's topic in Lana Thoughts
My understanding is she was born in NYC, then the family moved to Lake Placid soon after. -
It's a subjective thing I guess, but I can relate to some forms of social violence feeling like the removal of one's identity.

Lana's Sassy Replies (Appreciation Thread)
PrettyBaby replied to lflflflflflflflflflf's topic in Lana Thoughts
"LITTLE BITCHES" Hey guise I've got our perfect fanbase name! -
I'm getting the feeling this release isn't going to deal with physical violence so much as relational, social, psychological violence. In which case I think this cover is perfect for it. Maybe even down to removing her name.

I love this interview. Thanks for sharing it. [May 10 though?]

Ultraviolence - Pre-Release Thread

I think TPD meant she was about to say something that might come across as shady/condesceding. I wish it was easier in our culture to let men be the men they are, with different personalities being appreciated. Some guys are more aggressive and that's okay, but being less aggressive is okay too. We all need the freedom to pursue our own styles, without worrying so much about whether our choices are going to make someone feel we're choosing "against" their "side" somehow. -

Okay, gotcha. Sorry for the misunderstanding. -

I agree that full-on criticism is premature. But mostly people are expressing their feelings about what's been shared so far. And I'm thinking artists do want people to respond to their work. -

I think you're right, Vinny... but if someone's concerned about the acceptance of violence, why respond with a tongue-in-cheek expression of semi-violence? Yes, but I think violence is something, and that's why Lana's choosing it as a topic to sing about. (Or at least reference. How remains to be seen, I guess.) -
I still think it's about Barrie. He's Cuban like her.

I'm blown away. I wasn't expecting to love the new sound BUT I DO LOVE IT and I hope the rest of UV lives up to it. The high-pitched keyboard at the end reminds me of Dumpster's "I Am the Hunter." (Just a random thought, don't bother Googling them, it would seem their album Sky-Fi has disappeared from the internet...) So trippy

The point is that it's so stupid it's funny.

I prefer Y&B. OUAD is... nice, but it bores me to tears. Maybe if it was a two-minute song... no no, they needed it in quantity for use in the film, I understand and all... I'm glad she made it, I'm glad I bought it, but I'm just not gonna listen to it much. Meh. And that is what prevents Y&B from slaying. So that's my real vote. No slayage.

Music (& stuff) people like that you tried to get into, but can’t
PrettyBaby replied to Lirazel's topic in Music
Puller may be hard to find these days; they broke up around 2002. Worth checking out if you run across them, though Sometimes amazon has their CDs in stock. Yeah, we do get to decide what we want to put up with in our music choices. If it's not pleasurable anymore, why bother? I'm finding, though, that it can be enjoyable to cast a wider net as I relearn the art of the mixed response. I don't have to agree with an artist's perspective to love their music. And I can even find different perspectives interesting when I don't agree with them. I guess I've been trying to retrain myself to "catch people doing right," but without turning a blind eye to what's wrong, if that makes sense. In all areas of life, not just music. I find I'm a much happier person this way. But when faced with something that amounts to an onslaught of trauma (and I'm sensitive, so for me slander = trauma), I feel very free to hit the off button -

Florence, Ellie, Haim, even Marina Also Nirvana, Bruce Springsteen (though I like his 70s stuff), and The Beatles. I don't get it, I just don't get it... Lana was the first female singer I really loved. (Paving the way for Lykke Li, Grimes, Charli, and Sky... I adore them!) I pretty much grew up steeped in heavy metal misogyny. I liked alt bands too, like The Cure, but for me it was very compartmentalized. It was almost like two different types of music for two different types of people. The greatest contribution to the world by alt-rock bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam was not, IMO, bringing these forms of music together, but rather, raising hard rock's social consciousness on such a vast level. I understand about Linkin Park being more therapeutic than a lot of male-led acts, though I do generally prefer male voices. Puller (fronted by Michael Lewis) is another one I turn to for trauma-processing. They're very hard to find anymore; time marches on, the 90s are long over, and the Christian music industry favors ignoring-the-victim shtick. (Since becoming a feminist, I've scrutinized the lyrics of a lot of the Christian alt-rock bands I used to love, and Puller is the only one without a hint of the language-of-the-oppressor vibe that I'm trying to unlearn my tolerance for. I hope I'm not offending anyone -- I still love the church. But we're capable of screwing up the culture as much as anyone.) -

Sometimes I hear "lick me up" and sometimes "pick me up" ...maybe she changes it up?

I saw it too!!! (Well, I heard it at least... I was half-asleep, thought hey wait I know that song, no way! And then promptly forgot about it till now!)
