Norman Fucking Rockwell - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll

I totally agree with you that NFR marks a new debut, a new cycle. First of all, the cover doesn’t have a car on it. And she is not alone on that boat. Get Free marked the end of the cycle, the threshold. And now, we are in the bittersweet blue. Plus NFR echoes BTD: BTD was legendary but GoT tanked By critics; NFR is incensed. My BF asked me if I had just one Lana album to have, which one would it be: it would be NFR. HM and UV are close seconds, but they’re very specific with their mood. NFR is really « day-to-day » and reflects who I am at the moment. -

And I have finally been able to put my finger on what is «off» with Hope, to me. For the record, I really like this song, but I always need to be in a «special mood» to listen to it. It's because that song is too specific to me, and I can't relate to all of it. All of her songs are personal yet not too specific nor too personal. -
She can date whoever she wants. I love the bitch and want her to be happy. I liked that Sean was around and supportive of her, even if he was apparently a pig. Whatever happens in her life, it’s going to reflect somewhere; in her music, in her poetry, which is a big plus for us. They only thing that would be unforgivable, to me, would be a boring ass song about being a mother. It is so damn cliche. Even Adele fucking did it and it’s the most boring song on 25. I could be on board with a cute lullaby à la Cherry Blossom : it’s not too targeted as “song to my child” but just enough. Anyways, I am curious to see how this breakup will colour LDR7. I don’t expect UV 2.0: she did say that she likes her songs to be about two things. Sure, UV is about a bad relationship, but you can also feel the despair and being fed up to be in the music industry in the background of it; she channeled all of her frustrations into one album, which explains to me why it is so badass.

I don’t why she deleted the two posts... What’s that supposed to mean? Jack posted the cover in his stories, the painter did the same... However, guys, I don’t think her deleting the posts means everything is scrapped or that she got backlash from it. Didn’t we learn from the NFR pre-release, when snippets got deleted and posted again all the time?

NFR might be more « stripped back » (although I was pleasantly surprised when it came out: I though most of the songs would have even less production than what we got, based on the snippets). It think the songs have many layers, but in major tones (She did ask Jack to not go too crazy on the production). HM was lush production wise, just all in minor tones. LFL has a very big production: everything is in major tones and has many layers, even the songs we say are « basic ». I guess I’m easily pleased when it comes to her. All of her records are different and that what I love about them.

Amen to all of that!!! Except for the Instagram pictures, she didn't «do much for fans» through these hard times. I know, I sound greedy, but still... I'm hearing what a couple of artists are doing through this quarantine (livestreams, acoustic covers, single releases...). She should just release Yosemite and Roses Bloom for You as a double single release: I doubt she'll ever be in an «appropriate» state of mind to have them on a record and we've been craving for these fuckers for three years now. Two cute and positive songs would be sooooo soothing at the moment

HTD grew on me a lot. I used to hate its production, but now I really love the strings (Melotron?). The Greatest is now my favorite from this record because it’s been the song I kept going to the most when I was feeling down. HIaB became one of my faves as well. There are now songs I hate, though TNBAR is the one I skip the most, because I overplayed it too much before Norman came out. -

Ending the album with the Greatest would wreck me every time. It’s probably my fave from NFR and I get so emotional listening to it. But it’s also such a downer, I need to listen to something else to cheer me up a bit. VB would have worked perfectly as a closer. But I must say I don’t hate Hope as a closer. If LFA has made it to NFR, that track would have been the “most perfect” closer. There’s lots of praise for it on its own thread... It didn’t disappoint: it’s both dreamy/ chill and UV at the same time. -
Her record company counts the next one as LDR7. The “official” number of 7 began when they said LFL was her fifth album. However, we have no idea if AKA is part of those 7 or if Paradise is now an official one (it was meant to be an EP, but with 9 songs, it’s close to an album, plus it is a bit different from BTD). We’ve been debating this for many years now, and we still don’t have a definite answer.

Cinnamon Girl and NFR (title track) didn’t disappoint me either. But How to Disappear took me longer to love because the demo teased ended up being so different on the album. My main criticism of the snippets is when she starts posting them more than a year before the album drops. And in October 2018, she was posting so many snippets, it got us thinking the album was dropping very soon... LFL was teased a lot with snippets, but on a 5-month pre-release period, which is fine. But not a year +

The last three more « acoustic » tracks, after The Greatest, form a new kind of message: after the grandeur of desolation and loss on TG, things have shifted, we’re back to a new form of culture, one simpler, more intimate. A sorta of « let’s go back to basics ». And Bartender is also a burst of hope after the sadness of TG. -

To me, NFR, with Season of the Witch and Looking for America, is what she had in mind initially when crafting LFL: something a bit hopeful and sad, a bit folky/singer-songwriter, something a bit witchy, and a bit political as well. It’s a more cohesive LFL, in my mind. I don’t disregard LFL at all (it’s a very good summer album, very diverse), it’s all over the place and I love it because it reflects what I was going through three years ago, but NFR is with UV and HM when it comes to cohesiveness.
